Haven't you played GTA San Andreas, CJ pumped iron in his hood.
And the gym in Rocky was kinda in a ghetto sort of setting.

I've never seen a gym in the ghetto, which is understandable since ghettos are poor. Poor people usually don't have extra money for gyms but hey, I haven't been to every ghetto in the US.

Your talking like jar-jar is utterly confusing me. I'm torn between finding jar-jar cooler or you annoying.
I really don't want to find you annoying but I sure as hell don't want to think of jar-jar as cooler :(

I remember when I was about 23, my friend and I joined this gym in Jersy City and I swear, we were the only two women there who didn't work as table dancers. And all the men were big ass bouncers. Going there was like stepping into some surreal universe.

I taught at a hardcore gym a few years ago. Semi-serious (but amateur) lifters, hard/serious aerobic training, some boxing.
Nothing trendy.
You wore sweats and a tee shirt.
There weren't showers.
There weren't lockerrooms.
They were usually always open.
You paid by the month. If you couldn't make it, it was okay. That sort of place.
It was grizzly but everyone was great--there was a lot of support in there. It was a nice community.
When a trendy gym in the nearby neighborhood closed, members from there spilled over into the one I taught in. God knows why because when I first started there, I sometimes thought twice about to go into that place--I don't know how some of these quasi-affluent society people did it. But they did so there was an odd mix of money there. It was strange.
Eventually, the money won out; the facilities were upgraded & membership prices climbed. The original members dwindled away. It never quite made it to a trendy gym because it was a home-made place to begin with and it always felt that way even after the incremental upgrades.
The real pity is that about a year or two later, a trendy Bali's type of club opened about 5 miles away and the membership shifted again; that original place had to close and it never re-opened. :(

I've always been tempted to join a gym but they're so expensive and I feel vulnerable there, like all the pretty and healthy people will laugh at me. I never even considered ghetto gyms. That might be a nice alternative.

My experience is that guys at ghetto gyms are more in-your-face & outwardly flirtatious than guys at trendy gyms.
Trendy gym guys want trendy gym barbie-doll girls so if you don't play that part, they'll largely ignore you.
In all my years at lots of different gyms, I've never heard anyone laugh at or make fun of anyone else. I'm sure that some of the cliques discuss people in a mean way--maybe it happens outside of the gym. I've never heard it in the lockeroom or in casual talk.
(I gravitate to middle-of-the-road or less types of gyms, though, and I think people are more serious in places like that. I belonged to a trendy gym for 2 years and it was okay, but it was very much like what you described above. Lots of people in expensive outfits who were there more to socialize than exercise. Sometimes the juice bar got more action than the machines did.)

it's like every other post of hers is about how she is poor and her neighborhood is so ghetto and bla bla bla
i'm poor, you're poor, we're all poor. ok maybe not everybody's poor, but, you're not the only one who's poor, and, just
well, never mind

Hmm, do you think that's because the guys just got out of prison and are ecstatic to see women again? I don't want to be ignored by the staff. Since I probably wouldn't be able to figure out how to use the machines by myself, I'd want someone to help me, but aside from that yeah the other gym patrons can leave me alone. Do you work at a gym now? That's probably a dumb question because I know you have a non-gym job, but from all the talk about you going to the gym I'm still confused as to whether you just go there or you have a part time job there.
random aside, "non-gym job" is fun to say, give it a try.

I think the guys at non-trendy gyms maybe don't stop & think & analyze the hell out of everything. They just go for it.
When I need help with a machine, I usually ask the last person who used it.
I don't work in a gym. I just work out in a gym.
I spend my days as a full-time technical writer at a university.
After work I go home and maybe go running
or read some more (something non-worky, just for me)
or take a walk or visit my dad or meet up with a friend.
Maybe watch something on TV.
All dull but it's good.

I was talking about upscale trendy guys who, I think, tend to overthink and overanalyze their approach with women instead of just going for it the way thug gym guys do.
The lower end gym guys seem to see someone who looks good and they go for it.
The other guys look & watch and then maybe mull it over a bit before going for it.
Just my experience/observations.

No--not at all.
I try to be much more obvious when I'm calling someone on a specific something. Usually I'll do it flat-out (in a thread) or in a PM.
I don't think you over-analyze--well, maybe a little compared to most here (but that's not saying much :)).
I love the way your mind works and that you share your thoughts here is a treat.
You make me (and obviously others) think. That's a good thing.
