No names....unless you really feel the need.

Just list your 5 most annoying things about this message board...

here's mine:

1.) Internet leet speak shit. this includes all that "teh" and "!!111" etc....and using numbers in your text "because, WOW, th3y l00k like the l3tt3rs! WOW"

2.) when people jump on a thread claiming someone got "owned" or "hosed" when nothing can be farther from the truth. as if having 5 people all say it will make it true, when in fact, it's just a thinly vieled popularity contest...

3.) desparate, under-sexed losers who feel the need to comment on every female pic posted in sure shots. as if maybe, just maybe, it may lead somewhere....or that perhaps this qualifies as flirting in thier warped little minds.

4.) people who feel the need to post a pic every day...as if thier appreance somehow changes day to day, sitting at thier desk with thier webcam pointed at them. "look....here i am...again. please comment and validate me"

5.) pretty much an poster under the age of 20. the reason? that's pretty self evident.

honorable mention: of course, Pointless Threads like "i'm bored" etc.

and stupid message board "trends" like the "post here and i'll..." shit.

This is mine. All of them. Numbers 1-5.

If you don't post a photo, it's like you're a shadow of a person.
You don't exist.

Wait, do I smell a female post?
Yes...yes...it's there. Lurking. Somewhere. Here! Here it is!
Is she in Sure Shots?
No?!
I don't know what I was thinking. Or smelling.

I was just ranting about this and related things in a PM to someone. (Sorry again, you.)

2.) when people jump on a thread claiming someone got "owned" or "hosed" when nothing can be farther from the truth. as if having 5 people all say it will make it true, when in fact, it's just a thinly vieled popularity contest...

Your Nos. 1 and 2 are also my top two.

3.) when people just say "you're an idiot" or "you're wrong" with no explanation. Actually, they're more likely to have said "your an idiot" or "your wrong." :)

4.) people who pretend your question is too stupid to answer when it's obvious they can't answer it. I've always wondered whether this works for them in real life. Are their friends really that stupid?

5.) the last one is touchy and I wouldn't try to stop it but it bugs the shit out of me. I am troubled by the way PMs affect the board. They have their purposes but often people are carrying on a whole personal thing that spills over in ways I can't see as an outsider. Sometimes it's a hidden friendship so you don't get that people are flirting or carrying on a personal conversation in public. Sometimes it leads to people sniping at other people in an veiled way so their PM friends can understand but other people won't think they're a prick or bitch. This is what will probably make me leave the board. Sometimes it makes one person feel protective of another and so there is an overreaction to a public post. I'm guilty of the last one.

P.S. And I like the teenagers because they're the least likely to engage in the above shit.

P.S.S. And don't you hate people with long posts? :o

One ought never to turn one's back on a threatened danger and try to run away from it. If you do that, you will double the danger. But if you meet it promptly and without flinching, you will reduce the danger by half.

1. People who generally offer nothing to conversations except negatives. Like "this place sucks." If that is all you ever post-maybe you should go away.
2. When it is fairly obvious to everyone that a sensitive and for whatever reason self-conscious person posts photos of themselves and someone has to point out that they are just trying to get attention. Shut up. Either give them that attention that they are longing for or ignore them. Everyone has needs. Everyone is seeking approval. Everyone has insecurities about something. Why bully people who are easy targets?
3. I get annoyed by the early twenty-somethings who go after the teenagers for being immature. That so-important maturity that you try so hard to display to everyone at that age is just a faze. You will grow out of it.
4. The ones who bicker for three pages because neither of them will let the other one have the last word. (Rob and CJ (n) ) Take it outside, fellas.
5. Being the last to know. No one ever gives me the latest gossip.

1. Know it alls. When someone starts a post with, "actually..." it's a giveaway.

2. Narrowmindedness. There is a big world out there and it's been going on without us for a while. Most likely, your way is not the only or "right" way.

3. Self-righteousness. Just because the content doesn't measure up to your standard of interesting or worthwhile, doesn't mean it isn't. If you're looking for intellectual stimulation, you're in the wrong place.

4. Offensive attempts at humor. Maybe I'm just sensitive.

That's all I got. If I can help just one person, it'll be worthwhile.

From least to most annoying

5. The fast pace of the board, so good threads get buried under bad ones and good conversations get lost and forgotten quickly - but I guess that's part of city living, just part of having a large and active membership
4. Theme aliases that just post in character without saying much, just cashing in on the joke of the existence of the character alone
3. The small storage space for PMs
2. The character limit for PMs
1. When people say my posts are too long or that I am thinking too much about something.

which goes back to enree's post regarding just this... and how when you let everyone know you are a hermaphrodite 60 year old... only your true friends PM ya...
...which is okay by me. I don't want the PM attention attention from the hormonal 20 year olds. I've had my share of that. It gets old fast.

I could change it if I wanted to with a post to Sure Shots. I won't.

What I do mind is when people refer to me as being 1-D. They can't see past age or facelessness or booblessness or asslessness. :) They hear 40 and assume that the only thing I've done in my life was to have introduced some guy's sperm to one of my eggs and spat a kid out 9 months later.

I gave a challenge today to one of the Post Here threads to see if someone could respond without bringing up "mom." He tried--sweetheart--but ultimately, I got mom'd.

I don't remember having that attitude about >35 year olds when I was <25. In fact, two of my best friends when I was 18 were in their mid-30s and it was a great relationship. Maybe you need a dick or a young dick to think like that. I don't have one. I never really thought much about age before I came here. Weird.

I never really thought much about age before I came here. Weird.Yeah, I think I realized around 18 that there was no point in teasing someone older than me, since, with any luck, I'll be that age, too.

I also think those that talk about the age and mom thing are just showing a lack of imagination, perceptiveness, and tenacity. For instance, I'd describe you as a fitness freak, who likes to type a lot, and knows a bit too much about Groundhog's Day.

damn, i was trying to find the link to a hermaphrodite pug puppy for sale to add to this post... she/he is only $150 as opposed to the $750+ price tag usually...If only your parents heeded the warnings against in-breeding. (you're making this too easy here...and yes, I expect this back 10 fold.)

I'm going to leave this. Not because I'm offended, but because I'm really confused. I don't think it's my advanced age that causes my confusion--I'm not confused by any other teenagers. I also don't think it's my culture--I'm almost 100% British. In my present state of confusion, I'll start to ask questions and I don't want to start another 300 post thread with people yelling "INTERNET" at me. I have a lot of work to do this weekend and I am starting to feel my little bit of free time getting sucked away.

Yeah, I started with all of that in college. I have less opportunity to use Unix now since most everything is PC based.

I had a directory that listed the name, address, phone numbers, and email address for everyone (back then) who was on the ARPAnet (internet).

It was maybe 1/4" thick.

Okay, I thought of a few more.

when people leave angrily & dramatically*

when people have their accounts removed
and it subsequently trashes threads that that user started**

when people berate someone for asking
naive questions or for not appearing to have used the search feature first***

----------
* I'm talking about when people leave angrily, in a huff, and make a big deal out of it. It seems like they do that in an effort to get people to talk them into staying.

** I can understand if you want to have your account removed because of privacy reasons, but when you do it out of spite, that seems immature.

***I use search here lots and I sometimes cannot find a particular thread despite widening or narrowing my search parameters. Plus, sometimes you want information about a very common something or other [e.g., "ch-ch-check it out"] and you can't just search for that and expect to get reasonably narrow, accurate results.

Documad, I'm not just talking about her. I thought the topic at hand was to discuss bothersome things about MBs (in general). I see that it says "this" message board...I was wrong. In my most recent post, I was thinking about this board and a few others that I've visited or visit.

I didn't want to call her out (what's the point?) or any of the people from any other forums that I read because I didn't think anyone here would know them.

You seem pissed. Seems like you always want to roll your eyes or shake your head. It doesn't bother me other than I don't like to feel like I'm irking someone.

Enree, I'm sorry if I read something into it you didn't intend. It seemed pretty spot on, and having read the similar stuff you posted in GB at the time I thought it was more of the same. I really wished you had just openly joined in with the others at the time. I could certainly understand people being upset but it was all for the best. And we all gossip, eye roll, and stir up shit sometimes. I obviously have lingering feelings because I miss many people who left.

I'll take your post here to be preventative. I only belong to one other board and if I made a dramatic exit there no one would know who I was! But I like that Knuckles let us know. I keep wondering about other people who just disappeared. :( I understand deletion because for some it might be the only way to stop posting. But I'm sure glad Knuckles didn't do it.

I'm not pissed at you. If I'm coming across that way it's probably a good thing my work is heating up again and I won't be tempted to post so often! :)

^^^That's sweet---thanks, Documad.

I hate when people leave in a huff, yes, but I should have phrased that differently to say that I hate that people feel the need to leave in a huff. I think sometimes people get walked on here and not everyone realizes or appreciates how much it hurts some of them. I hated that she left like that or felt the need to leave like that. She contributed so much to the boards and I miss that. It made me feel badly that she felt that the only way around it was to leave. :(

If I left this particular board, I think I'd say goodbye first because I've been posting so much more. I'd want to explain it for those people who care and also give the people who hate my long posts a chance to organize a celebration.

I hope that if I ever do leave, it's not because I'm angry or because I couldn't stand it anymore. I'd hope to refocus & redefine the way I look at things here before I'd do that. But anyway, yeah, I'd say goodbye first. Just so that people understood.

Knuckes, David--they handled their exits with grace but their circumstances were different (no anger or hurt feelings involved with those exits--just life getting in the way of MB activity).

1. The quoting style in the political forum
2. The way Qdrop brings that style over to Beastie Free :D
3. The way generalisations are made based on post count, age, location or simply friendliness. Just because you comment in a positive fashion on a picture (male or female, look at how people jumped on DroppinScience when he complimented g-mile) doesnt mean you are a desparate, under-sexed loser. It could just be that you are friendly. I know that for some, conflict is an addiction, but alot of us on here genuinely want to be nice to people.
4. People who can't take light hearted jokes (ie the Oz Clique). Maybe you all need to be a little bit more Australian in respect to being more laid back. Its not an exclusive clique or anything, its really just a thread where we can bring up australian stuff rather than spamming the board with info most of you have no idea about.
5. Tools who think a "List your top 5..." thread is more original than a "Post here" thread. Although, I think given the thread starter's usual intelligence, I would say that was an attempt irony.

Are you referring to the tendency to quote a snippet of a previous post, respond to it, and then quote another snippet followed by another response? With that style, you might get, say, 10 snippets and 10 associated responses.

It looks offputting but it's reminiscent of the way people did things on newsgroups or in email with ">" and ">>". It does help if you want to address things point-by-point but it's hard on the eyes AND it's hard to do. Well, it's not technically hard to do, but it's a pain in the ass to do it if you don't use an external editor.

Enree (I guess, I should have quoted something because now it's in a funny place :o):

I will say this: There is a lot that goes on here that isn't public. We all assume things without facts. Not everyone tells the truth. You can never be sure of anything. We don't control the forum. There is no right to information here.

We all pay a price for the actions of other members, whichever side you're on. I suspect that many would say that if they didn't enjoy the atmosphere they're no loss. But it's a big loss to some of us who came here because of the band. Many would say that I ruined the fun atmosphere here (even though I would say it wasn't me and it wasn't all that fun).

Most of the time we like the people we like because of what they reveal privately, not because of what they say publicly. So that just complicates things enormously. We all like different people for different reasons. Just like in real life. :) I happen to like intelligent, passionate people even though they sometimes piss me off. I'd rather be pissed off than bored. But I don't like extreme stupidity or intolerance and I believe that if no one says anything it leads the speaker and others to think it's socially acceptable.

And if my ageist friend is still reading, I'll grant him his wish and put him back on ignore so that I won't be tempted to respond the next time he suggests that an alleged victim of sexual assault should be tortured for reporting the crime. ;)

No...my father is faaaaaaaaaaaaaaar more obnoxious than you. Hes one of those people that will go "ahh you bloody pinko" if you argue that giving tax cuts to high income earners of 60 dollars a week and low income earners only 6 dollars a week is unfair, and that the 60 dollars would go unnoticed by the wealthy, but would have a big effect on the poor if the cuts were reversed.

and I believe that if no one says anything it leads the speaker and others to think it's socially acceptable.

When we're talking about the sorts of things that happen on the boards, I might object to something once. Maybe twice in extreme circumstances, but I can't/won't do more than that. Not just here, but in my life, this is how I try to just be.

I don't see it as my job to do more than that. That person's got to learn his/her own lessons and I don't particularly see it as my place to dole out those lessons.

I've talked about this with one friend who thinks that it's a selfish or socially irresponsible attitude to do that even at this level (I'm not talking about sitting quietly by and watching rape or murder happen).

I truly don't see it that way--I see it as being realistic (for me) and allowing--allowing other people to make mistakes and learn the lessons they need to learn without those lessons being forced upon them.

Some people like the challenge of mass reform :) but it's not my cup of tea.

So when something bothers me, I might mention it, change what I can & want to change, and then figure out next steps. Those next steps usually involve me doing something in isolation--rarely is it the case that I'll try to change som unwilling/resistant someone else. I might try to make sure they know how I feel just so that there are no misunderstandings, and hope that they see the lesson in it that's intended for them. But I won't do much more than that.

With all of this, I'm not referring to anyone specifically on this board. I'm speaking broadly. Probably too broadly. And I don't know if this is making sense...I'm really hungry and my brain and thoughts feel fuzzy.

3. SERIOUS board fights. I mean really, if you have an issue with someone take it to messenger or something. And at that point, with the effort of taking it to messenger, you should realize how dumb it is and just STOP fighting, dorks.
4. Any alias. Almost. There are VERY few that I like. Some of which include Scary Ass Cat (I miss you) and Jimmy. Otherwise, they are just annoying and I want to smack the person that made it around with a dead fish.
5. General cattyness. It hasn't happened in a long time, but anytime other board members seriously complain about how another board member gets a bunch of attention (and this has happened to several people here)... it's fucking stupid. Get the hell over it, it's the internet. So they get a lot of attention, if you don't like it, don't give them attention by complaining about it! And also, if it bothers you that much perhaps you should get your head checked because it's one of two things: jealousy or overall stupidity. Both of which you need to work on.

but he's right. it seems like a very arrogant way of postingThat's why I do it.
I don't see it as my job to do more than that. That person's got to learn his/her own lessons and I don't particularly see it as my place to dole out those lessons. I agree with you, though I didn't always. I think my thoughts on this changed about the time I realized it wasn't my way or the highway.

Okay, my list:
1. People trying to keep a thread on topic.
2. Those that have a hard time with someone else's posting style. It might not be your cup of tea, but WHOMP THERE IT IS.
3. Anyone who can't appreciate Miami Bass.
4. Beastie Boys fans who don't think Paul's Boutique is their best album.
5. Non-echewta friendly polls. There ARE rules here, people!

4. Drunk posting. Isn't there something better you would want to be doing while you are getting drunk, or are you sitting at home alone, drinking in front of your computer?
.

Now, as some one who has posted drunk and been berated for it, its not like i got drunk whilst sitting at the computer. I came home drunk and put on the computer to play music, and as we all do (sober or not) i visited beastieboys.com, and well, posted!

qdrop, i am under the age of 20 (only just) and i know for a fact that you don't dislike me. and i'm not the only exception.

ok, what i don't like is how certain male members on here (i'm sure they know who they are) only talk to the designated "hot" females of the board - and they feel the need to mention it at every second post. it shits me. have we not, as human fucking beings, risen above this kind of mentality?

In no particular order...

1.The “intellectuals” mostly located in the political section. These were the same kids that took an as whoopin on the playground rather than stick up for themselves when they were kids because they didn’t want to “stoop to that level”. They all think they’re fucking geniuses who try so desperately to display they intelligence but wind up spending the bulk of their time arguing mundane points with other idiots.

2. The “too cool for you all” types who constantly come on the internet to make fun of people who post on the internet.

3. The “attention whores” who usually have a bit of “too cool for you all” in them. These are the people who try to control the flow of the board, start arguments with anyone who might get more attention than they, and then always try to play the “bigger person” card once they start to look stupid after 4 pages worth of arguing.

4. Ass kissers and sucks ups. There are a few people here that I don’t really care for and I am not exactly shy about showing it. On the flip side the people I really like know it but w/out me having kiss their ass. Other people that fall into this category are the ones who always feel the need to defend women and play knight in shining armor.

5. Board couples who feel the need to post about their relationship…..worse still the people who actually give a shit about board couples’ relationships.

In closing I will say this we should all realize that the bulk of the things/people we are annoyed by ARE the board. Even as I read my list if somehow everyone in each of those categories was gone this place would be rather empty and dull.
