For those of you who haven't heard about this whole fiasco, here's the deal.....
Oprah was in Paris last week and she ran out to some upscale, ultra expensive store called Hermes to buy a watch. The store had just closed and they refused to let her in the door. It broke her heart and she's been bitching about it every chance she's gotten for the last week. She's chalking this up to the fact that she is black. She's even going to do a show about next month.
Now, here's my take on this.....
I understand that she has plugged Hermes on her show and has become their unofficial spokeswoman and she, as well as her friends, spends a great deal of money in this store. That's all fine and good. What I'm having a hard time with is the fact that she is so out of touch with reality that she automatically attributes this to racism. I'm really getting sick of everyone saying "It's because I'm black." I've fucking had it with that. She is so arrogant and pompous and self centered that it never crossed her mind that maybe the door wasn't opened for her because THEY WERE CLOSED.
The girl behind the counter works for her money just like Oprah does and I'm sure she wants to go home at the end of the day just like Oprah does. The store has been open all fucking day and she waits until ten minutes after closing to decide she wants to buy a fucking watch.
Fuck you, Oprah. Buy it tomorrow during normal business hours.
Opinions?

I don't think it's just about being black, it's about being wealthy and expecting privileges because of money.
In hollywood stores will close down just to let a celeb shop in private. and in hollywood I'm sure if Oprah showed up 10 minutes after closing they'd kiss her ass and let her in. But she wasn't in hollywood la la la land this time and she's frosted that she wasn't given celeb status.
turning this occurance into a racial issue is kind of dispicable. I think this was really about not being afforded the privleges of being a celebrity.

I think she must be like that to get where she's at, but I've never seen her do anything that made me think twice about her motives.
Granted, I don't explode my head all over the place to watch that show and get her prizes...if I watched more regularly I might see that...?
A friend of mine is all hot to take one of the $29 airfares to Chicago to see Oprah being filmed in September. I'd rather explode my head all over the place than to do that. But I owe her. Fuck. She hasn't mentioned it in 4 weeks so maybe it was a whim. Just a really bad, bad whim.

What would the world be like if we all self indulged ourselves like Oprah?
She is the opposite of my spiritual beliefs. She always has to put her mug next to every cause she is involved in. If I want to find a good book I'll read the NYTimes book review or have it passed on by an actual human in my presence.
She is a self-indulgent bitch, she could at least become active in current events, make a political statement and a call for true peace on this planet. That would be way cooler than giving away cars.

*gasps* shocking!
Anyway, on topic-
The reports I had read about this said that she was told by a store employee that she wasn't being allowed in "because we've been having a problem with North Africans in here recently". If that isn't racism, then what is?

Hermes wipes its ass with Macy's or Lord & Taylor. (And just so you know, it's pronounced air-mezz, dahling.)
Re: the employee quote - that's something I'd heard when the story was first reported , a few days back, but after I posted earlier I went and looked up a few more recent articles. It seems there is some debate as to whether it was said or not. Originally in a gossip column item on this matter, it was alleged that this is what had been said by the employee to someone who was in Ms Winfrey's entourage that day. The store disputes this and says its security video recordings do not bear this out, although as yet it would seem that Hermes has not made these security recordings available to the press in support of their claim that no such thing happened. So, who knows.

I suspect we won't ever know for sure.
I've never heard Oprah making claims like this before, so I think I believe her if it was said to her directly and she made the claim. I don't know anyone in her crew, so I don't know to trust them. But I sort of trust her. I'd like to think that she's an okay person--she seems to care, genuinely, about kids and women's issues (a little biased on that latter bit). It's hard to tell from where I sit.
And about Hermes, a classed up store like that should use that as their new tag line on their shopping bags. Shop Hermes. We wipe our ass with Macy's and Lord & Taylor.
Maybe put a little asterisk after that and credit you for it. We got culcha.

Whatever was said, Oprah was pissed because she's Oprah god damnit and she wasn't given special permission to break the rules re closing time. She's used to getting special treatment everywhere she goes and some lowly French person had the nerve to say the one thing Oprah never hears -- "no."
I can't stand her show because everything is through the eyes of Oprah. Nothing exists unless Oprah is affected by it. This is where she perfectly represents American culture though because we don't give a shit about anything that doesn't affect us personally.

We've made it to Brit-loathing status over there?! Yessss, thank you Mister President. First I was imagining Oprah by herself until the mention of someone in her entourage and it occurred to me that she never goes anywhere alone but is instead constantly surrounded by an entourage of people, of assistants who would no doubt cause a ruckus and take up all kinds of time and the store would have to unscure all the security devices.
I went into a Gucci store in Italy one time, and you could tell I was not welcome. I was dressed casually and even though I had my entourage with me and the store was open, I still got icey stares that drilled into the back of my skull until I shamefully shuffed out after accidentally elbowing a handbag and tipping it over.

She's a monopolizing tyrant. You know how people deal with tyrants? They overthrow them. But she's also a preacher. The church of Oprah, full of dedicated followers who literally and emotionally buy her as a product, as a lifestyle, as a philosphy. But then again, is this anything new? Haven't there always been leaders like this in the social and political worlds? Haven't there always been this mass public desire and demand for a figure who is larger than life, to tell us what to believe and where to put our money and how to think, like a great grown up parent for all of us?

I don't know much about Oprah other than the fact that I pretty much hated every book she ever put in her book club.
In a thread from a few months back, I said about some movie that I felt like I was watching an Oprah book. Mae responded, quoted that, and said, "I'm pretty sure you were."
I always think of that when I see those Oprah books in the bookstore.
I was glad when they started labelling them as "O"prah books and giving them a dedicated table. Nice of them to do that so that I know to avoid those books.
And now that I think of it, I think it was the whole Oprah's book club thing that put me off reading fiction. I can't remember the last fiction book I read...but I suspect that it was one of her books that I bought unknowingly or that a friend tricked me into reading.

Mine is a group of 6 children, I get paid to take them around places, I mean I call them my "entourage", or my "assistants", whatever, my "little performers". They put on a good show. They sing and dance and do cute little tumbling acts and juggling. Every once in a while one of them will get out of line during our 4-hour practice sessions or maybe one will develop a bad rash or rickets and they have to be replaced. I mean it's tough for me too but we have to think of the group and when one weak link is bringing down the whole show I've got to think of our finances and it's just too bad when they get into an awkward phase and they can't draw in the crowds anymore and have to be transferred to "police-lookout" or "bartender" or "crowd dipper" which is really just a sweet name for pickpocket, anyway it's great to keep them off the streets and they learn things and contribute to the community and get off their lazy homeless asses and it's a good time for everyone

Oh I dunno. I have read books that I've really enjoyed, that later on I've found out were "o" books. The Corrections was one, I think, and it would be a shame to have missed out on a book that excellent just because it happened to be on that list. There was another one I picked up that was I think called "What Looks Like Crazy on a Normal Day" (or something like that anyway) that i found very interesting, that I later learned was an "o" book as well.
All's I'm saying is, don't deny yourself the possibility of a good read, just to spite Oprah - cuz I'm sure she doesn't suffer any as a result, it's only you that loses.

Oprah doesn't read these books or pick them out. She has PEOPLE to do that for her and then she puts her name on it. And what about the classics she's promoting? I suppose it is good to encourage people to read these, but I guess I have snobby ideals or something because I feel like she cheapens their value. Also, I don't think some people know what they're getting into when the blindly follow Oprah's book club. As I Lay Dying is a difficult book to read, even by Faulkner standards and people are unquestioningly buying a collection with As I Lay Dying, Absalom Absalom and The Sound and The Fury. You wouldn't think it would be so hard to find a list of good classics that you'd have to read what Oprah suggests.

It seemed that for a good while, all of her books had this pick-yourself-up-by-the-bootstraps theme. I got so tired of that. Granted, there were some good ones in there (especially at the beginning). I seem to remember having read a couple of books that later on went on to become Oprah books. I can't remember which ones, though. From maybe 10 years ago.
I just wanted her to branch out a little bit more and get away from those woe-is-me books. I think she might have started doing that--branching out into more traditional literature--by introducing The Grapes of Wrath and some Tolstoy. I fell off by then, though.
But my friend who wants Oprah to run for president...she reads every book on Oprah's list.

That is sort of the Oprah theme though, in general, or it was. Everyone loved her because she was born in poverty and worked her way up. Americans love an underdog who triumphs, our culture was founded on it from the very beginning, when the United States was being formed. Abraham Lincoln the poor farm boy studying by candlelight in a log cabin, Frederick Douglas the slave who taught himself to read, Benjamen Franklin who was a poor merchant's assistant and through hard work and study and will yadda yadda. It's the definition of the modern ideal as expressed in literature, abandoning the notion of nobility and land-owndership as titles, and um, I forgot where I was going with this.

Mine usually consists of my sidekick or my #1. His job is pretty much as my best friend to eat drink be merry with me and scan for women. I also have no less than two big dudes for crowd control/security. Next there are at least three semi-hot to smoking-hot plutonic female friends. Their job is to hang around me initially and dance the first few songs with me. This helps to spark the interest of all the other hot girls in the place by either making them jealous; “What’s he doing with her? He could do better, like me”; or by befriending them and hooking me up “Oh! You have to meet my friend Rich you two are perfect for each other!”. Also there’s usually a driver who stays sober and makes sure we all get home safe.

Yeah, Addie Bundren and clan do take a bit of perseverence. However, isn't there something fairly commendable in giving your audience some credit for having some intelligence and recommending a book like that that will push them, rather than just presuming that 'Oh that's just too hard, people don't like anything that's going to stretch them a bit'? I mean, if everything that was being recommended was cotton candy, your criticism would be "The books she recommends are brainless", you know? You can't have it both ways. If a bunch of people who otherwise would never pick up As I Lay Dying get a copy and have a go at it, even if 90% of them get frustrated and give up, at least they had a go at it and I feel that that has value. Plus it means 10% do get through it, and that has to be a good thing, no?
Personally, I feel that just about anything that gets people reading, borrowing, buying, writing or talking about books is worthwhile.

I know, I know, and I agree with you, with everything you said. I mostly think it's best to just get people reading and she's using her power towards something of value. Ideally people would read Faulkner because they just knew about it somehow and woudln't need to be told, but that's unrealistic and there's nothing wrong with where you get your directions as long as they are towards the right place. Attach some photos of the big hot security dudes and I might find my way to writing a B + and we won't call your parents.
I thought you were thinking of becoming a lesbian though?

The thing is though... it is totally entirely possible to believe that someone there might have made a comment like that 'north African' thing, you know? It's not like Parisians are particularly known for their sensitivity in such matters, is it.
Very true, Paris is one of the most overty racist cities I've ever visited. Some of the graffiti on the Metro was truely appaling.
But I daresay that they wouldn't have had a clue who she was. Her show is barely shown in the UK (Sky One I think!) so in France she'll be a proper nonentity.

I AM repulsed by men, almost as much as I am by Birkenstocks. See I thought it was my problem, but I've come to decide that it's the men who just aren't attractive enough. Good in theory, lousy in practice.

repulsed is such a strong word though... i mean, it would be one thing if you stated that you just haven't found the right guy, but to say you are repulsed by men in general is different...

I'm guessing you're talking about cute guys in their 20s? If so, I see your point.
Guys my age should never be permitted to show their feet in public. Many have gruesome toes. It's even worse when they wear white cotton socks with their sandals though. That's probably a Minnesota thing. :)

There's a guy who sits outside of the coffee shop down the street from me and he's always got a book going. I want to stop and talk with him about those books but the deal-breaker is that he takes his sandals off (ewww) and puts his feet up on the empty chair (ewww) and he has nasty feet. The feet aren't so bad. It's the nails. They're scary bad. His scary ass toenails are preventing us from having scintillating conversations about those books. I don't know his name. In my head, I call him toenail.

I don't know much about Oprah other than the fact that I pretty much hated every book she ever put in her book club.
The Pilots Wife and The Bluest Eye were both pretty books from her book club.
But I still can't stand the bitch.
edit-Ditchdigger's Daughters was a damned good book, also.

David Bowie- Probably because he's David Bowie and he's married to an ugly supermodel.
Gwyneth Paltrow- She named her daughter Apple. So no.

Was she educated? I don't know anything about her life, except that she was fat. It only takes an ignorant, non-educated, immature kind of person to claim that. I'm not saying that it couldn't be since I'm not entirely sure of how it was, but...hardly.
As someone said it's because if they were closing the store, they were closing for everyone and it also includes superior races as celebrities too.
It could be racism if the store opened for her. Because it would be giving privilegde to a black person considering their ancestors had suffered with slavery and all. It wouldn't be racism for the fact that black or white we all should be treated like the same, as human beings, of course, "duh" (I hate that word...eew). Anyway, it's amazing to see that racism increases each day, not just by white people, but many times, but black people themselves. I gotta say that she made a racist comment. If the owner (or the person who was closing the store) a black person, would she say something? I don't think so. Therefore, Oprah could be a racist.
