If someone with really good credit marries someone with bad credit how is each person's score/credit affected?

Hmm, would it depend on a prenup?

I would think the individual would retain their record of good/bad credit. As a married couple, they would have their own status.

^ Damnit Toucan why don't you just say "I don't know" so we can move on?? :)

Yes you do have your own status, but certain things like a home loan are in both of your names and both your scores are factored into what kind of interest rate they offer you. The Mr. didn't really have bad credit when we married, but he really didn't have any. I cosigned on a low-limit credit card for him that he paid off every month. Now, five years later, he had really good credit....mine's still better tho :D

Oooh so if I was married but got something in my own name just me it would just be based on my score?

Lopp, it's like my Mother told me "You shouldn't be concerned with a lady's credit score because what really matters is that she is not fat... or ugly.... or mormon."

My Mom never said that.

yeah but isn't it pretty common knowledge that only fat or ugly people have bad credit.

In California, you assume each other's debts when you get married, but not their credit score. Of course, if you are both applying for a loan together, the bad credit can fuck you both over. Sometimes, they will take the person with the good credit as the primary and they kind of sweep the bad credit under the carpet if it gets approved...

You forgot to put in the smiley. Or the eek. Or the frowney. Maybe just the confused. Just kidding.

(I said I'd never divorce either but it happened anyway. I still would say I Do all over again, though, because my kid came out of that experience and that was a great thing.)

Lopp, she's just using your bad credit, and her dirty hair as excuses.

I like ot think a thread can't move on until I give my two cents. Usually I get change back for that.
