View Full Version : Soy Milk?

Who here drinks the stuff? I'm coming to terms with the fact that I "Tone Capone" might be.... lactose intolerant.... Meaning that I do not tolerate lactose under any circumstances! It hasn't always been that way but, maybe the past month... anyway I have started lifting seriously again and I take these awesome protein shakes that taste great with skim milk... but the lactose thing. SO basically, does anyone know if soy milk will be tolerated by the lactose intolerant?

Yes, soy milk is good for lactose intolerants. I'm just mildly lactose intolerant, I can eat most of the cheeses, but no cream or thick milk. A stressful work blossomed it properly about 6-7 years ago. It's quite usual for Finns actually, there's loads of lactose-free milkproducts available because of that.
Personally I think soy milk and oat milk taste rather bad, but they're alright in cooking, nothing to use in your coffee tho... bleurgh!!

I mean, it's a repect thing. I don't go where 'tose dogg eats and he ain't supposed to go to MY hangouts... I DON'T TOLERATE IT!

It took me about a week to get used to the taste of SoyMilk (switching from skim). Now it's Cow'smilk that tastes weird.

I prefer soy milk to dairy milk most of the time. When I drinnk coffee or something with cow's milk now, it makes me feel like my mouth has this weird coating or something, it's hard to explain.

I'm somewhat lactose intolerant. I often get sick from ice-cream, milk and such products. However, some cheeses settle well for me. It's an on-and-off thing.

soy milk is good when you use it in stuff like for cooking or cereal, but otherwise its nasty as fuck and about 3 times the price of regular american heterosexual terrorism hippy free cow squeezed milk.

Silk is by far the most palatable brand. their chocolate soymilk is awesome. i drink it straight. otherwise, i don't really drink soymilk - but i do use it in shakes and cooking, especially vanilla Silk. vanilla rice milk is much better on cereal, but it doesn't do as well baking. i use it when i'm making mashed potatoes though.

Back at my member orientation meeting at the food co-op some hippy started talking to me about soy-milk. ASking me what kind I drink, and when I replied that I drink Silk he got a disgusted look and started talking about the soy milk he drank because it didn't have sweeteners in it, etc. He seemed like the Milk Musolini to me.

But, oddly enough, these days I try to drink Silk and I do see how it tastes like liquid sugar.

I drink unsweetened SoyMillk. *does fascist salute*

I would only use it for protein shakes. You know what still freaks me out? That milk they sell at the Commisaries in Germany that come in a box and they just sit on the shelf for months. They aren't even refrigerated!!! Freaky stuff mannnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnn....

a few months.

sometimes if you leave it out in really extreme heat it can thicken and nastify. Rarely ever had any go bad though.

I finally tried the chocolate soy milk (like a year later:o ) and it's fuckin awesome! I got it in the fridge now!

Just thought I'd share...

We're a soy household. I'd rather not drink hormones, mucous and pus, and the child is intolerant.

Rice milk is nice too, I get a few different milks for different uses. I also like the way you can keep unopened cartons in the cupboard for months.

Chocolate soy milk is really good. I agree with cosmo that Silk is a good brand. Not sure about other flavors. But the chocolate one, man. I'd take that over almost anything.

these days i do mostly unsweetened vanilla almond milk in my shakes and cereal and unsweetened plain soymilk in all my other recipes. rice milk is good, but i can't handle the sweetness of it anymore. i still drink the occasionally box of chocolate soymilk, too. and there have been great advances in the field of vegan cheese lately (y)

now, i still have a pair or two of leather shoes that i kept because it'd be wasteful to just toss a perfectly good pair of shoes. so keep them! just don't buy new ones. or, if your conscience is just too guilty, give them to friends (like i did, heh). you doing a tofurky for thanksgiving? they're surprisingly good.

i very highly recommend these books:

How It All Vegan (http://www.amazon.com/How-All-Vegan-Irresistible-Animal-Free/dp/1551520672/sr=8-1/qid=1160179356/ref=sr_1_1/102-4934602-2957767?ie=UTF8&s=books) - great for beginners, and a kitchen essential

Simply Vegan (http://www.amazon.com/Simply-Vegan-Quick-Vegetarian-Meals/dp/0931411300/sr=8-1/qid=1160179448/ref=pd_bbs_1/102-4934602-2957767?ie=UTF8&s=books) - a little more technical, and the recipes aren't quite as delish as the previous book. but the nutrition section is indispensable, and the recipes are good jumping-off points. i used their collards and tomatoes dish and seasoned it differently and added garbanzos and it became one of my favorite meals.

Vegan Meals for One or Two (http://www.amazon.com/Vegan-Meals-One-Two-Personal/dp/0931411238/sr=1-1/qid=1160179600/ref=sr_1_1/102-4934602-2957767?ie=UTF8&s=books) - awesome for the lone vegan. lots of great ideas. the one-pot-wonders section rules.

there's a vegan microwave cookbook i've got too, but eh. not so good.
