View Full Version : Have you ever posted a message for someone else?

If you've been online for awhile...
Did you ever post questions on newsgroups or forums for other people?
Would you do it now if asked to do so by a relative or a friend?
What about if someone that you didn't know asked you to post because they didn't have access or were embarrassed to ask the question publicly?
I used to do this (post questions for people) all the time on newsgroups for relatives and friends who didn't have internet access or who were embarrassed to post. This was particularly true for one older relative who had a run of health problems and who wanted more info from, as she always said, "real people." From 1985 until about a couple of years ago, I probably posted for other people at least 10 times a week.
In a few newsgroups that I visited frequently, I'd regularly get email from someone that I didn't know at all and they'd ask me to make an anonymous post for them. Those were always a little weird but I could understand the request too. These people had internet access but didn't want to ask the questions themselves. I didn't know those people, but I always posted for them.
I just had email from someone who must have seen one of those old posts, is having a similar experience, and wants to know how I resolved it. This made me laugh because I don't remember most of what I posted over the years and I didn't remember making this particular post.
(Which also makes me realize that I should have said "posting for a friend" more consistently. But thinking back on it, this happened lots--people posted for other people and sometimes people said it and sometimes not. 20/20 hindsight. Forums and screen names have made it easier for people to be faceless.)
Has this happened to you--have you posted/asked questions for other people? (Maybe it's just because I've been online for awhile and used to be in the newsgroups often but it used to be a common thing for me.) If someone asked you to do it, would you? I don't know that I'd do it now but it was the right thing to do then.

I think the closest I've come to doing so is if I have an interesting conversation with someone off the board and bring up the same or an offshoot of that same topic here. But I don't post questions for other people, no. I'm nobody's flunkey like that. Nobody's.
By the way, ee, who's eye is that?

^^^ :)
I don't know who that eye belongs to. A friend sent it and another avatar to me a few months ago. I had it up for awhile and then interchanged it with the other one--the tummy one--that's in my profile. Went back to this one yesterday.
I think it was something about her trying to copy my hip avatar, but I caught her in the act. And then we agreed that she could have it in her profile.

Well, I'm glad you two were able to reach an amicable compromise without resorting to violence first.

We did but I still watch him and his hip avatar out of the corner of my eye.
You can even stare if you like. I won't mind.

I feel like I should get a picture of my finger as my avatar. To more easily denote the making one's self vomit gesture.

I tried to find a finger-gagging avatar for you but google failed me.

No no, see, it has to be my finger. With my perfectly manicured nail, slight halfmoon lunula and frequently moisturized cuticle.
Absolutely. I wouldn't feel comfortable having some random hip as my avatar.
You never know where it might have been.

Mine aren't of me but my friend gave them to me because he said they're close enough. I agree with the profile one but not the avatar one.
TAL, I didn't know it was your own personal hip. I feel a little voyeuristic now. :o

Were you wearing a half top in that picture, TAL?
Nope. Just like right now, I was topless then.

No, like TAL, I'm shirtless. :D
Almost. Not quite.
I'm wearing a shirt now. I had to go to the market and get some food stuff.

And I want more of it. I'm still hungry.
Someone put a slice of cheesecake in the kitchen at work this morning.
No one wants to just take the whole slice, so someone keeps taking slivers of it.
Now it's about half the size it was this morning. I think it's funny that no one will just fucking take the thing.

I think that everybody should try to remain clothed for the remainder of this thread.
I'm eating yogurt with strawberries and cereal now. With my clothes on.
You're not the boss of me!

Just because she's there doesn't mean she'll be topless, man. I mean, I hang out in crack houses all the time, and I don't use. I'm just here for the free internet access.

Not good to laugh out loud & alone, at least when I'm not in my office beind a door.
You can tell them about me if you want.

I forgot that someone did that once and then told me about it! I forgot about that. He posted as me.
I guess that's not terrible because I was sort of doing the same thing but in reverse when I posted all of that stuff for other people. But this guy saw that I was logged in and he posted on a music group without asking me first. He didn't want to be identified as asking what he thought was a naive question and risk ruining his reputation. So he did that. I forgot about that. He should have asked first.
You and steger, on the other hand, sort of have that right I'm thinking. :)
I dated a guy who would hide what he was typing when he typed in his password.

There was some unbridled board hilarity a couple of years back, when afro/bc and kate(d) wanted other people to post as them. Apparently it was fall down funny.
