I had to actually say yes to the AOL plug in to get this, it seemed fairly innocent, I'm sure I'll remove it further down the road though.

Who are the winners of LIVE 8?
Clearly,
Fading Rock Stars:

Sales of
Pink Floyd: "Echoes" up 1300%
The Who: "Then and Now" up 863%
Eurythmics: "Best of" up 500%
Dido: " Life for Rent" up 412%

Kudos to Pink Floyd for donating (http://news.yahoo.com/news?tmpl=story&u=/afp/20050705/ennew_afp/afpentertainmentmusiclive8g8pinkfloyd_050705130526 ) the proceeds to the poverty relief.

My hope is some sort of traction will begin with all these old white guys and G8 will be recognized for who they are and who they are not, Godspeed to Africa.

There's something to check out in here (http://www.fionasforum.com/Stairway/posts/05-07-04/159750.shtml) as well.

Live8 didn't seem to get the message through. In Canada, when asked, people at the event didnt know what the point of the thing was. One even replied "Is it AIDS in Afghanistan?"

In London, when asked backstage, Paris Hilton didnt have a clue either (she was just there for the publicity and free booze), prompting Anna Matronic from the Scissor Sisters to launch a blistering attack on her, which included "She is a perfect example of everything that is wrong with the world today".

Also, at the Make Poverty History event, all the bands playing that were backstage were given a free goodie bag including: a 3G Nokia phone and i-Pod and a free Live8 T- shirt. Madonna got a special one said to be worth £7,000, including jewellery and computer equipment.

It's been all over the BBC News today that most of the artists from the UK gig are giving their profits on sales since the show to charity...

I posted it in another thread a few weeks ago, but the first Live Aid was what revitalized Clapton's career. It put 5 of his albums back on the charts. The artists are always the real winners.

I was unable to watch the big show this time. I was only home for about an hour and during that time I saw about 20 commercials and then silly commentators talking, then "the Who are on stage" and 20 seconds of music while the Who ended their song. Cut to more commercials.

I watched every moment of the first Live Aid and I don't remember commercials (except for the event itself of course). I vividly recall the vapid MTV VJs. My friend bought the DVDs of the first Live Aid recently, but it's not the same without Nina Blackwell, et al.

I was living in London when Live Aid happened. I've most of it taped on Betamax (guess if I have a player for those :( )
There was parties everywhere that day, I went to several! It was a great day! :)

MTV has got to be the biggest fuck ups ever, I heard about all the commercial breaks and cut to celeb's like Jimmy Fallon who push their upcoming film and give their spin on Debt Relief for third world nations. ..WTF is up with that?

My brother said they even cut into ads about LIVE8 while broadcasting LIVE8. They should have their FCC license pulled, rank fucking amatuers, they can't even play pre-programmed videos correctly.....AGHHH!

Don't even get me started! * finger waving back and forth*

i dont know...theres just something wrong with this whole Live8thing, and i cant exactly define what it is. it seems like so much money directed at something so abstract as "awareness"...its like so much money into something thats so hard to even define,no? its not right that they did a better job playing music than of making awareness...i dont know...these benefit concerts, they just dont seem...worth it. they know where they wanna aim but i dont think they aim correctly. so much money and hype, but i wanna know what the difference b/w yesterday and today after the concert is. i hope the organizations dedicated to 3rd world poverty are giving out their statistics as well as the music industry.

The difference is that now a whole lot of good people think that they did something and they can sleep better at night and they can forget all about it. I don't want to take anything away from people who enjoyed the music. And the people behind it have good motives. But at the same time that it raises awareness it helps regular people move on past it.

Remember the rainforest? We had rainforest cookies at our healthfood restaurant. Sting was photographed with native south americans wearing interesting clothing. There was a concert or two. You don't hear much about the rainforest now unless you go looking. Did they quit burning it down? Is it safe now? Or is it still disappearing at an alarming rate?

It's difficult to get the public interested in long term problems that have no real hope of a solution. I don't blame people for trying, but there is an argument that celebrities do more harm than good.

Here's (http://www.sonician.com/live8/list.html) quite a comprehensive list and downloads to just about all the acts on Live8. I noticed that couple of U2's and Cure's don't work properly, maybe they can fix them so keep checking.
