View Full Version : Saved by the Bell really wasn't an accurate portrayal of high school

I wasn't friends with my principal. I didn't have the Max. My friends and I didn't magically end up getting the same summer job at some resort. I did know someone who took drugs to stay awake, but not because of tests, but because he was just a weird ass bastard.
Looking back, my high school life was disappointing.

Leave it to Beaver was the DEFINITIVE portrayal of gangsta life in the 50's.
I would've rather have seen Lisa do Showgirls than Jesse. Jesse looked like a whore even before she played a whore.
Beverly Hills 90210 was exactly like my high school.

neither 90210 or Saved by the bell was like high school in Denver. It was more like, well there isnt really a show becuase nobody would want to watch that. It was boring at school, the fun stuff happended when we all ditched

I was so uninvolved in high school. I barely remember anything happening while AT school. Just other things that happened when I happened to be in high school.

I've been thinking about high school a lot lately as my reunion is coming up next month. When I think about it, my high school days were mostly boring. There weren't any really exceptional people in my class. Nothing really interesting ever happened. There weren't crazy bullies or really mean people. There was some of that but I didn't really see it. Nothing like the movies at all.

I almost wrote dawg which brings me to a funny story. Last night, I was throwin down in the south side and a friend of a friend brought a friend and he just seemed like one of those guys you cant help but pick on. he's this 350 lb. wigger dude that wore a Tee shirt that was seriously down to his knees. he kept calling me dawg, and i kept saying "godammit, man, my name's randy, not doug!" anyway, after a while, we kinda got sick of each other and started talking shit. he called me a "mother fucker," which I didn't take too kindly to, so i said "hey, nice shirt. i take it you bought that shirt from the "tall" side of the store." he proceeded to push me and then i was like, "yo man, my bad, let's try to be friends. Hell, if you take off your shirt and swing those things around, I might learn to love you."

Everything revolved around a small group of "important" kids and everyone else in the background was a nerd, a jock, a ditsy girl, or a nondescript nobody. I think it was pretty accurate.

I'll be honest I'm just jealous when I notice a movie quote and recognize it and then I don't feel the need to say anything, then later someone else mentions that they recognize it and just for speaking up about recognizing it, they get the favor of the person who quoted it and I'm just jealous so I'm like "NUH UH I SAW IT TOO I SAW IT FIRST!" and I don't want the person to think they are alone and that no one notices their movie references because that's like, how they bond and shit and make friends.

I always thought John Hughes movies portrayed a good cross-section of what high school is really like. 20 minutes of every half hour sitcom never provide enough time to show any sort of reality. Freaks-n-Geeks was a great show that didn't get the recognition it deserved. Oh well.
