Because of you, the library can't afford new books! Pay that $9.75, then rack up some more late fees so they can buy some more...

When we were teenagers, my sister checked out Tchaikovsky's 1812 Overature and kept it out for too long.
They sent postcards reminding her to bring it back.
Then the postcards turned from reminders to requests.
Eventually, they sent her letters on stationery and they pleaded with her to bring it back.
Finally, they called her at home and said that she could just leave it at the door anonymously and forget about the fees. She did that. Or rather, she had me do it.
We always joked that that went on her permanent record.

if the fee is $1 a day, how did the total become $9.75?
How'd they get the .75?

There was a Seinfeld episode about this, right? The Library Police nabbed Jerry, yes? Do you still have that dictionary?

I once owed them $40 and I had to pay it otherwise they'd send me to the feds.
I now owe them another $16. They're threatening with government action AGAIN.
But I don't mind that much. I owe them for two memoirs of Reagan, a Bobby Sands book, and a Brecht book. They're all for school, so I just chalk it up to book fees (hey at least I didn't buy them).

OH YEAH, PS-
www.hollywoodvideo.com
Hollywood video has a class action suit against them. I'm a part of it, because they lost my movie for a few weeks and charged me $70. If they gave you unrightful late fees that you've had to pay in the past, go to their website and get your free rentals.

Library late fees are my all time favorite charity! I contribute often.

I think our late fees are only like ten cents a day. The last time I went to the library, the librarian scolded me for not having my library card updated in over a year. He was very upset. He had to verify that I still lived in the same place and had the same phone number. That was all. I laughed through the entire conversation which made him more and more pissed off.
PS Every few months I donate books that I have already read to the library. I receive a lot of books as gifts and I just don't see any reason to hang on to them.

Oh, you're killing me! I really really want to be good and do that but I have a thing about keeping my books. They have signs up and everything. Now I feel guilty.

:(
Honestly, I keep the ones that Ireally love because I like to loan them to people who I think might enjoy them as much as I did. And some books i can actually read over and over. But I am trying to keep the clutter at bay.

Sometimes I just like to look at my books. Because "books are so decorative." Ever since I was a little girl I dreamed of having a house with a library. Yeah, that's going to happen.
I rarely buy a hardcover fiction bestseller but I have donated most of the ones I bought. I can't part with my nonfiction books though because you never know when you need to know something and it's not like the info is available anywhere else.

My mother is a book collector. By the time that I moved out at 17, I had over 500 hardbacks, mostly classics and mostly rare. There were a couple that I had appraised at being worth over a thousand bucks a piece. I went out of town for a couple of days and my foster sister who was living in my apartment sold them all for a hundred dollars to buy heroin. So after that I just don't collect things so much.

Wow, I'm really sorry. My sister just takes things from my mom and moves them to Seattle where they live in glass cases. I gave up on all that but I still collect my own books and records. Nothing of value.
My friend has a similar aversion to collecting stuff but it's because she lost a close family member at a young age and so things aren't important to her. It's a healthier way to live.
P.S. The library just emailed me that they want a history book back. It wasn't even a good book. Must be in the trunk of my car.
