View Full Version : do you think your personality "shines through" in your.. postings?

by reading a bunch of posts of a bunch of people on this board i'll get some sort of idea of their individual characters and how they differ etc. i'm wondering how much of this is accurate though. i mean, if you read some of my posts and then some of dipdipdive or turdberglar or whoever you can clearly see that they were written by different people with different personalities, but i don't think people can really make a good guess about what you're like in real life based on what you write. i think if people from this board ever met me (which will probably never happen) they'd be pretty surprised to find out what i'm like. i wonder if you people feel the same way.

so do you think people can get to know you by reading what you write on here?

I would say yes, but in a very small way. I use this board to vent and say/do thingd that I don't do normally. You get to know the real me better via PMs and stuff. But not my posts, I act too retarted.

I think it's possible to get to know someone's true self here if they want that to happen and if they work at it. And if you, on the receiving end, do the same thing (want to get to know the person and work at it).

If you want it, the hard part is conveying & understanding through writing the types of visual communicating you do when you're face to face. Some people can do and receive that more effectively than others. Bottom line is that I think you can come pretty close to knowing a person if both sides want that to happen.

About me personally, there are areas of my private life that I don't turn over here at all, so you won't get a true sense of me without meeting me and sustaining that beyond here. And I gesture and move around a lot when I'm with people, something that even if I tried, I couldn't convey well in writing. Like I'm doing that right now and you don't even know it.

I used to inject more of my personality into my postings back when I found the lot o yas more tollerable. And back when I had more time to sit here and think up how I could have more personality in my posts. Now I save my long-winded personality for people I see face to face, because they can't skip over it. Muhuhahaha.

My name is James Woods. I make movies for a living. I could kill all you fuckers in one fell swoop, and you fuckers would have no fucking idea what the fuck happened to you. Fuckers.

I've met Mr. Rogers a few times.

And Graham Chapman, and I have a "ni" from him.

You can't touch Mr. Rogers & Graham Chapman.

90% of what I post is said in a joking manner, as is 90% of what I say in real life, so I would say my personality shines through in my posts.

i'm not really shy, just quiet. i don't like to talk to people all that much because a) i think most of them are idiots and b) i figure no one would be interested in what i'd have to say anyway. i really only open up to a few close friends. i'm such a drag.

I think you'll have to ask kll or alruggs if my personality shines through on the board seeing as those two ladies are the ones who get to talk to me the most on the telephone.

As for me, well, I don't really care if my personality shines through on here or not. You get what you get and that's it, that's all.

(y) And that's what is so fab about you chuck. Your randomness rules.

I am pretty much the same in real life as i am on here so my personality does shine though i 'spose.

Mainly because i can't be arsed to keep up some board 'persona'.

My personality reflects my posts 3/4 of the time but I think that I read something like-----7/5th of all people do not understand fractions............so I would say that I am honest most of the time.

That is a question I have asked myself many times over, I avoid conflict and actually look for resolve ASAP in my real life. Yet here on the internet I will get into debates about political issues and Religion. So in that sense it is a nice relief valve I didn't have before.

I suppose this site is good for me because, like all of you, I'm a smartass and enjoy quick quips. I've been on some sites that made me pretend to be somebody else just to get info on various hobbies etc. and after a while I just felt as though I compromised my personality by not saying what was really on my mind. (ditto for some real-life situations).

Now with co-workers and close friends I can get away with the same banter as I do on here, so overall it's me. I do however try and maintain some form of civility when out in the public.

It is a great question and just recently this question is being seriously focused on because, baby it's on, the internet is really on! Long term effects haven't even begun....

I'm not really worried if my personality shines through. I just enjoy conversation when a good one gets going or helping people to see things from another point of view even if they don't fully agree with me. In turn I've met people online who have made me really think through and challenge my own beliefs. I guess that's what I look for most online.

I really don't know.

I'm sillier in real life, I believe. Or more serious?? I don't know. It depends on the person. Who caaaarrrreeees?:p

Ok, I'm actually pretty boring in real life. I talk too much and I nobody understands what I'm saying, in my own language!!

Yeah, I'm pretty much the same. I'm definately less talkative in real life than I am here, but overall I'm pretty much the same.

I'd say that's a big "no". :p Some of my personality traits but not my personality.

I now realize that I appear angry and/or strident sometimes, but I've never felt either when posting. I wouldn't come here if it made me feel either one. That's why I'm trying not to read naval-gazing threads like this one anymore. Ah, whatever.

Also I'd never debate anyone unless I respected him/her. It wouldn't be worth it. (unless it was a political debate :))

Umm...In real life I definatly don't talk as much, I'm shy and quiet. It just takes me longer to open up to people and get comfortable. Actually I think my personality shows more on here then in real life. Wow that's sad, but it's easier because you all don't know me. But the way I talk, like what I say and stuff shows on here pretty well now that I think about it. Because I don't think before I type. :p
