View Full Version : growing up on (well, around) the boards

I am making too many posts today I know.

But seriously, I've been around on the BBMB since I was 15 years old. So much has happened since then. I am 21 now. I know that the changes have shown through posts here since I started. Even things from last year I sometimes cringe at or will slap my forehead and wonder what I was thinking :p

I don't know whether to find it interesting or pathetic that I've been around this long. Probably the latter. And yet, I stick around anyway. Mainly because I like some of you losers.

I think I posted the exact same kind of stuff four years ago. When the twin towers were still standing and randy's deadications was scared to go outside and notorious lol was called the shah of iran.

So, for me, I probably didn't grow up. Or at least it doesn't show in my writing.

I first came on in 1998, when I was 14. But I started really posting later that year, when I was 15. So I'm in the same boat as you, Crys.

You're also the first avatar and title I remember from this board. You had a pink neon star and it said "Star Brite."

i was thinking like this the other day too. we've all kind of grown up together and experienced huge significant things in those years. i've seen people finish up high school and pick universities, get degrees and jobs in their fields! people turning 19/21 and having their first legal birthday piss-ups etc.

i find myself saying oh, yeah my friend in LA, san diego, san fran, redding, phuket, nyc and so forth. my friends wonder how i 'know' people all over the place. they seem quick to dismiss their significance when it's learned that they're 'internet people'. like somehow they don't count. just because i haven't met some of them, doesn't mean i won't. it probably just means i haven't been over that way yet.

this post reads like a nightmare, im sorry but i refuse to edit it.

yeah, it's crazy, isn't it?

And people wonder why it seems kind of clique-ish here. I think it's completely unintentional. We all just ended up being some kind of pseudo family by being around for so long, so we end up forming relationships, friendship or otherwise.

10.02.2005 it all comes together. :D

i kinda made this statement a few times: i'd never travel to anywhere i didn't 'know' someone.

locals know whats hot more so that a brochure or travel agent. plus most folks are happy to let you crash at their place. they might offer to pick up at the airport. you take care of the house while they're at work, have the dishes done, dinner prepped. treat them to movies and drinks and everyone's a winner.

I don't even know how long I've been here. I just know it's been a while. Longer than two years... I think I started posting here between my junior and senior year of high school. I graduated in 2002, so I might have started posting sometime around 1999 maybe 2000?

Wow, to think I've been here five, maybe six, years... now that's a crazy thought. That's almost a decade, dudes.

And I do and get the same things. Ill say "Oh yeah...my friend is a vegan and she gave me this really great recipe for Vegan Chimichangas" or "This lawyer I know is totally getting married and it is so Rad!" And people look at me crosseyed then rolleyed when I tell them these are my 'internet' friends. Like i made you guys up or something. :\

I say my friend...so in so...as well...then my real friends will be like who? And then I blush...

Yeah, I still have that sitting around on my hard drive.

When I was first hanging around I remember Paul Nice was always talking about AWB in every thread and Rirv was zalways chiming in with how the one beat he made was the best on their album.

I should throw my AWB CD in the CD player for old times' sake. Don't suppose I have time to listen to it, but I could... you know... throw it in there. For old times' sake.

i dont remember alot of the names from the beastielist, all i can remember is vutom15 since he would sometimes start up a riot and people would bitch at him. so that was around 98 where i first started talking to pauli and some other cool people, although i didnt really post answers through that huge ass email list, i just read them and hoped the beastie boys would go to the place i was then living at.
and now this place, this place is hilarious. and its the first time (apart from pauli) that ive talked to so many online people for so long and got to "know" them and all through here or wherever. its a great habit.

I'm sure there is other boards out there but this one has always seemed different - even in slow times its still nice to see the odd chit chat.

I think this generation helps to. Most of us here was listening to the beasties in the 80s-90s, they aren't a new band and thus don't get many 12-14 year olds coming and falling in love and then threaten suicide cus the album is late (actually I don't read Beastie-General but I assume not).

Anyway, we grew up with technology rather than it already existing - most of us know there was a time before the web and if this was one of the first places you came to when you first came to when you first logged on then it'll also have an nostalgia value to it :)

I've also been here for quite a while. 5,5 years. Much longer than I ever imagined when I joined.
It was a bit before my 19th birthday I think and I have changed a lot since that time. I used to be very insecure and rather depressed. Typical teenage emo behaviour. Now I have tons of confidence and my life is at a point I never thought it would be 5 years ago.
Also, this MB got me together with my first boyfriend, got me to fly to the UK a bunch of times, made my father think I joined a cult and taught me some valuable life lessons.

There's also this Dutch messageboard that I've been on since '02 and it's almost painful to read my old messages there. Sooo depressing.
It's amazing how much I've changed.
Last week I met up with a bunch of 'oldskoolers' in Utrecht (25! biggest MB meeting EVAR!) and it was so much fun. It's strange that after all these years I now hear the posters' voices when I read their messages. :D
