Last weekend I had the great fortune to get to see both of these amazing artists perform.........FOR FREE.
Stevie Wonder at Live 8, and Elton John on the 4th of July, both on the same stage.
Who do you think is the better songwriter and overall performer?

performer: Elton John
songwriter: Stevie Wonder
Only because Elton co-wrote so many of his songs with Bernie Taupin whereas Stevie Wonder wrote most of his own songs, didn't he? Plus, I have a special place in my heart for Songs in the Key of Life.

not only did Stevie write all of his own songs, he played all of the instruments on his albums- piano, bass, harmonica, drums...
check out Music of My Mind, the beginning of his solo/spiritual/musical joiurney

You cheated Barb, you can't choose both!
....and do you have any idea how many artist that one album has inspired....."Songs in the Key of Life".........Truly an amazing and seminal work of art. (y)
And as much as I love Elton, I have to give my vote to Stevie.

You shortened me. :)
I can't choose both, one per category. That blows.
I guess if forced, I'd choose Stevie but I'd want to see Elton in concert.

Stevie Wonder, no doubt. I love them both, but Stevie Wonder.
You think we'll ever meet Stevie?

I used to think they were saying, "Do you think we'll ever be steamy." :o

It has to be Stevie. No doubt in my mind. I go nuts for "You Are the Sunshine of My Life" and "For Once in My Life." You can't fake the funk on those two songs.

Stevie Wonder is deep down in the groove. Deep deep down. Innervisions (http://cd.ciao.co.uk/Innervisions_Remastered_Stevie_Wonder__Review_5491 306) alone is worth the win, but he also has all the rest. The first song that popped in my head when I read your title was "Too High". (y)
I love Elton John, but Stevie is dope.

I'm not a fan of the work either of them did in the 80's and beyond, generally--I liked a few songs here and there, I guess. Overall, I'd have to go with Stevie, though.

Def Stevie Wonder. Overall he's better, but they are two of the greatest. I saw Elton John live last week, his voice was amazing. I didn't expect it to still be so good.

Stevie is probably better, but I personally like Elton better. He's one of my favorite solo artists (s/t-Captain Fantastic and the Brown Dirt Cowboy).

the fact that he writes all of his own songs, plays all his music, and has been in the limelight this long and is BLIND those are too many factors that make Stevie better then Sir Elton John, even though both are great. Mon Cherie Amore is the jam. Stevie just has more variety

Stevie has it all as a musician and performer, and songwriter, but he's so slick, he doesn't have the tremble that Elton John has, that emotional seething that makes John sound like a maniac, like an unpredictable distaster waiting to happen, like he's going to cry or scream or explode. Stevie is more subdued and refined. I don't know nothing about music though.

Well, compared to Elton John, even Bowie is a little subdued.

OH NO if Bowie is in the contest then, frankly there is no contest because he wins for style, music, sound, performance, freaky real life persona etc etc. I think part of what makes people PERFORMERS includes their offstage personality, just them as human beings, I mean look at Axle Rose.
