They don't even need to say anything, just act that way.

Like Jennifer Lopez, Salma Hayek and most Latin celebrities. Aren't we all tired of this??

I hate the way Salma Hayek knows good English but she strives herself to talk it in a very strong Latin accent just to show how sexy she is and all that crap. I thought she doesn't need that because of her beauty and all that...crap!:p

Well, according to history, yes. Althouh we don't usually call ourselves that way.

Latin America=Mexico, Central America and South America. Brazil is in South America.

The only thing I wonder is why you think Salma Hayek is "trying" to have a sexy "Latin" accent when she speaks English. How do you know it doesn't come naturally to her?

Not everyone can have perfect accent-less English, y'know.

Hehe. I wish. I don't wanna have a perfect American English either. I like to talk "clean" according to myself. Although I've learned the American English my whole life I won't force to talk exactly like them, but I don't force myself to talk extremely latinish and she does that. I say that because in her movies she speaks great English most of the times, like really fast and almost in a "celan" way not too Latin not to American, but whenever I see an interview with her it seems she's forcing to sound even more Latin. Maybe I'm the only one who noticed that.

aussies don't really have an accent. maybe some of the bush-born folk do, but city folk don't have thick stereotypical accents.

all the aussies in foreign (to australia that is) movies have accents along the likes of paul hogan and steve irwin.

or is this just me saying this cause i'm used to the aussie "accents"?

Nuzzolese

^^^ yeah true the stereo type from the movies is completly wrong and blown out of proportion yet we still have accents....if you go over seas like say america or england everyone can easily tell your australian by our accent.

could that be because we don't have an accent??
you can tell when a southern-stated north american is talking because of their accent...
you can do the same with a pom, because....shit....it's the pommie accent!

but aussies...everyday people don't have an accent.

Everybody thinks they dont have an accent. You dont notice the accent you speak in. We dont have "no accent", we have perhaps a slightly more soft version of the steve irwin-esque accent. But the fact that people from overseas can pick an australian accent, because of people like hogan, irwin etc etc, means that we obviously have an accent similar to theirs, whether we think so or not.

Tzar
07-11-2005, 09:25 AM
i considered that too. the whole "everything thinks they don't have an accent" - like i said before, am i only saying that cause i live with people who have the same 'accent'.

but from watching House (top fucking show - hugh laurie at his best), jesse spencer is aussie and he doesn't have an american accent, nor a pommie accent. it's just.......in between. it's easy to tell he is niether a yank or pom but still...

ahhh what the who...

Well thats probably the best description of the aussie accent out there. Britain was the country that the earliest aussies came from, and America is where most of our TV and music comes from. Combine the two, add a bit of yobo and theres your Australian accent. But I mean to people with more exotic accents we would sound very different to having no accent. Spanish people would think they have no accent and that we all sound like steve irwin. I bet you couldnt tell a south american accent from brazil from a south american accent from uruguay or something, but to South Americans, its probably a noticeable difference.

Hmmm, I'm not sure about the accent thing. I haven't heard anyone from Uruguay talking in English. At least not lately. But we do talk differently. I mean, I don't think I roll the R's. I tend to vary, like talking slowly and then fast. When I talk slowly I sound like a retard and when I talk fast I can't understand much what I'm talking because I skip some letters. I skip letters even in my own language, I believe.

The thing with American English is that is too nasal, kinda like Portuguese from Brazil, we are damn nasal too. I mean, the sound.:pSo that's why it may not be the sexiest thing. :o

yea, not thinking you have an accent happens to everybody including b/w southamericans, i guess if you havent travelled alot its hard to make a comparison. and thinking whos got the "strongest" one is obviously relative, theres no such thing as a standard, which seems...sort of confusing doesnt it? it seems like there should be.

and b/w south american countries, theres thousands of different accents, just as all other countries, including the regional ones inside each country. But, its funny, cuz you picked the only country in southamerica that, not only has a different accent but speaks a different language, cuz remember that Brasil speaks portuguese not spanish, as do the rest of the latin countries, including Spain. Then, we would have to separate Argentina and Uruguay from the rest, cuz we speak differently. For example when i say "yo" (me), i pronounce the "y" with an "sh" as w/ every word with that letter, and some other differences ill explain if anyones interested. Then, the rest of the countries like Ecuador,Chile, Peru, etc have the same basic pronunciation but different accents.

(French Guiana and the 2 next to it-have no idea what theyre like though)

We could never roll our R's because Portuguese doesn't have the strong "r" like Spanish does. For example, the word "carro" (car) sounds like "caho" in English or my nickname "Roby" ("hoby"). I know this woman from Venezuela and her accent is quite funny. In Portuguese I mean. I was even wondering how Brazilians sound when they try to talk in Spanish without really knowing it, our so well-known "Portunhol". We must sound pretty pathetic.:D

Funny thing is that we don't use "tu". I mean not like we should. It's mostly used by people from the South, the rest of the country doesn't really say if very often. But to differentiate the "you" we say "vocĂȘ" to anyone that we know well or someone at our age or less and we use "senhor" and "senhora" to older people. We never say "senhorita" though only in a funny way.:D

we use senhor and senhora also, but i mean when you have to say something like "will you please continue" or "how old are you"...well, you know what i mean, this is more for marsdaddy, meaning you "add" sir/maam, you dont "use" sir/maam. for example "how old are you, sir" or "will you please continue, maam", theres only one word signifying "you" in english, we have two, depending if youre talking to someone you know well or is older.
