I've taken loads of pictures of architecture in Helsinki. It is very fascinating! There's loads of influences from both the Russian era and loads of Jugend as well. Remember to look up when you're there, there's always surprises! I really love the old Elanto milkbar and the area in Katajanokka, and the couple of old stonehouses in Eira.

Sorry. It's just when I was over there, pretty much everybody I met would tell me the impact the Stone Roses had during the kick off of the rave scene, and they all rated that album in their top five. I was told their first album would always represent a special time in U.K popular culture; a major factor in why 'Second coming' never met expactations. And because you British folk are so friendly (in real life) I met an awful lot who felt this way.

With that in mind, calling it underated would be wholly folly.

You were 3 when the first one dropped, right?

(don't worry, I was only ten, I've always found it funny how we people front like we really understand something we weren't there for.)

Then you're being taught an understanding from a prescribed text or series of texts for the greater purpose of a degree or diploma with which you will either earn the money you want, or work in a field you want to, or ideally both.

overrated and underrated just means that you disagree with other people. if you think band A is underrated it just means that they suck and your taste sucks because you like them. i mean, why would your taste be any better than that of the critics or popular opinion or whatever.

ToucanSpam

Perception does not equal truth.

I just assume everyone is stating their opinion, you can either agree or disagree. But outright saying 'oh your opinion is worthless' or 'fuck off and die' is pretty stupid. Een if you completely disagree with someone, at least repect.

I'm curious what this definition of under-rated is, and how this band fits into it.

Actually, I'm also kind of amazed that The Beastie Boys are considered underrated by anybody on this board. For doing everything their own way, they get plenty of love.

fuck that, popular opinion? it doesn't enter my thoughts when listening to music. you like what you like, you dislike what you dislike...simple. how can underrated mean that a band 'sucks'? if that's your view, would you like to me tell me what over-rated means? with you're brilliant logic, I guess that means they rule and your tatse in music rules for liking them? no, that wouldn't make a lot of sense now would it (!)

i wouldn't say they are over-rated - they definately have the songs to prove they aren't shit.

when Cliff died, that's when they got thrown into the spotlight. they never planned to make it big. they didn't want to. it just happened and it grew to them.

I think most people are rating what bands/artists are overrated/underrated in preference of personal taste.

Padster, the Stone Roses were quality but you can't say they were underrated. Nearly everyone will look at them as the band that kick-started the baggie-era. If they were underrated, you wouldn't hear about them at all and Ian Brown wouldn't be the artist he is now.

o% hahahahaha how can you say that when you dont know SHIT about my muscial taste except one statement. first off I never even mentioned Ludacris(whose a better lyricist then the boys), 2nd off the boys I love their music or else I wouldnt be on this board, but the fact that people hail them like they some sort of lyrical juggernauts is beyond me. Their lyrics are not that advance, they are ok at best MC (compared to a Big Daddy Kane, Rakim, Nas, even a 2pac) and most of their songs/singles sound similar in nature. I said they were overated but I didnt explain why which is the downside of this thread. I actaully have legit reason, dont get me wrong they are good at the style they do but over all they are nothing that spectacular in terms of lyricst, they just have a very very orginal style. After all, they are one of the top 10 best saleing rap artist/groups ever.

PS: how can Prince be over rated when: he plays all his own isntruments, writes/composes all his own songs (a rarity in the game right now) and to mention this hadnt had a top saleing CD since the 1990-1991 (a 13 year hitus from the top 10). Its beyond me.

[QUOTE=g-mile7]first off I never even mentioned Ludacris(whose a better lyricist then the boys), 2nd off the boys I love their music or else I wouldnt be on this board, but the fact that people hail them like they some sort of lyrical juggernauts is beyond me.

[QUOTE]

the Beasties are good lyricists for that reason alone, it's in their own style just like everything else they do. i wouldn't even compare ludacris to the beasties in any way, shape or form...'i'm coming for that number 1 spot', fuck off man!!

the fact they're continually referencing shit that's in some way relevant to them, without a thought to whether people will get it or not is cool to me. Besides, I can't read through the lyrics of say The Update, Bodhisattva Vow or Right Right Now Now without classing them above the majority of modern day 'hip hop', when every other word is bitches, drugs-related or how much of a fucking gangsta so and so is.

You can call that a generalisation, I wouldn't disagree...but thats how a lot of hip hop fans percieve those rappers with their lyrics, and that's something you won't get with the Beasties and their lyrics...generalisation.

I'm always a firm believer that the Beasties can make any lyrics sound good, so maybe i've just been suckered in by that...but the day I see a modern day mainstream rapper (i.e. 50 Cent, Eminem, Ludacris) provide sprawling lyrics close to anything on say, Paul's Boutique, is a day I don't think I'll be seeing.

Moving on...I am aware that ludicris, and most mainstream rappers (usually ones that started their career before 2000), are better lyricists than any of the beastie boys. However, to say that the beastie boys are overrated is rediculous. For one, they are not one dimensional like the artists you mentioned above. They are good rappers, good instrumentalists, play a good rock song and have some pretty decent punk songs to throw in the mix. They make excellent albums and have a knack of finding the best producers/dj/and piano players to suit their music. However, to say they are merely good all rounders is unfair. After all they do have probably one of the top 5 hip hop albums of all time in Paul's Boutique. You can claim that that was the result of excellent production all you like but when it comes down to it nobody else could have achieved that sound on that album other than the beastie boys.

haha! ^ maybe they did just get "thrown into the spotlight" .. but not wanting it? that's a bit of a stretch. this is a band who's drummer is lars ulrich after all... although i do agree that maybe cliff wasn't so interested in fame.

they are definitely overrated - just because there are other metal bands that are as good that don't get shit all. and those bands didn't all of a sudden get shitty either...

i agree. Lars did sorta want the rich and famous lifestyle more than the rest of the boys. Kirk and James (back in the day) weren't totally interested - they just wanted to play some music to their fans. Cliff was totally aposed to fame. watch Cliff 'em All and you'll see what i'm saying.

there are other good metal bands out there, of course, but they're usually under the 'death metal' or 'thrash speed metal' category. MTV and all those poppy music associations won't touch 'em because it won't be good for ratings or what have you - 12 year olds are too scared to listen to some Slayer :p.

about them getting shitty all of a sudden. the only real shit work they did was St. Anger. Load-Reload were really different; for good or bad reasons? - who knows? but they weren't overrated when they wrote Master of Puppets.

i'll also admit they've gone to the poppy side ever since TBA. the money side of things has definately got to them. i saw a list somewhere on some US money/business website. they were like the 4th richest US based music group at the moment and 26th richest celebrity entity on earth (actors/directors and muso's combined)?? that's fucking unbelievable. but i still love their work.

Generally, it's better if bands evolve and try to change (if not radically alter) their typical sound.

Having said that, there are a handful of bands who are great at making the same songs over and over. Ramones, for sure. AC/DC is also good at this (within their first decade of existence), but they reached a point where they should've packed it up a long time ago. It's like: "Okay, I get it. Rehashing the sound is lame; replaying the same lovable tunes at concerts might be a blast, but releasing record after record of the same old jazz can be trite. People will say "The hell? Didn't I pay for this song already?"

And no, they don't. Look at The Clash, Cure, Beasties, Sabbath, Zeppelin, etc ; they were always doing something interesting at every turn. They preserved their essence without stagnating in repetition.

i suppose you could add Metallica to that list
Kill 'em All compared to ReLoad - different as fuck.

Could it be that AccaDacca never changed their style because no one admitted this (same old jazz) back in the day or had the balls to say it at the time?

They were so big and awesome back in the day, people musta thought "who cares!? it's acca dacca!! let's headbang and drink beer!"

keh?

I never liked Metallicrap, truth be told.

yeah, pretty much anyone who's not terrified to be labeled as someone who enjoys *gasp* pop music likes abba. even elvis costello goes on for years about how much he loves them.

by the way, i in no way meant that i'm not down with abba. big ups to swedes. but as far as the wilco comment, you = ex-parrot.

anyone who says Zeppelin is overrated should see their physician regarding the tumor eating away at their brain, clearly they are delusional...
They are though. There are other bands that have had a huge influence on not only Zeppelin but rick music as a whole who don't get even close to the attention they deserve. Listen to the Small Faces or Humble Pie. Robert Plant owes Steve Marriott a huge debt in the vocal department.

That said, just because a band is overrated doesn't mean they are necessarilly bad. Some are, some aren't. For example, my favorite band is The Jam, and even though they are extremely underrated in the commercial aspect, they are somewhat (somewhat though. there are plenty of bands who are far more overrated than them) overrated critically. Doesn't mean I don't like them. Doesn't make them bad.

Also, Linkin Park (although most of you don't like them anyway, which is a good thing). Peter Frampton.

yeah, i hate Muse. it always depresses me when someone i know says something about how great they are or something. it's like telling me you fuck kitties, man. like, come on. things were going so great, and i thought you were so cool, and then...aww, man. :(

Well I wouldn't say I hate Muse, I do enjoy some of the songs. But they are not the greatest thing since sliced bread, despite the fact people rave about them like they are.

I say average.

the cough cough how you know I was refering to Luda hahahaha, 2nd I was talking bout Prince as a seperate topic since someone else mentioned him this list of underated/overated isnt just pertaining to hip-hop
You highlighted ludicris in your original reply to the post http://www.beastieboys.com/bbs/showpost.php?p=920666&postcount=57 :p
I get your second reference now (y)

Add to my Overrated the Kaiser Chiefs...kinda meh but they get hyped alot here. When I figured out the lyrics to that song "I predict a riot" wasn't really "I've got tourette's" but "I predict a riot", the song kinda lost a bit of its lustre :o

Weird, sometimes I still feel uncomfortable when listening to that song....:o :o

I really think that no one except Ween would have ever dared to make such a song and put it on an album ;)

static age by the misfits is underated. i think it's
one of the best punk LPs ever released

perhaps it isn't underated... but albums like damaged
and nevermind the bollocks get mentioned way more
and i don't think they can touch the genius of static
age

the name is almost exactly the same too...
