What the hell is Grimace supposed to be?

I've heard a few different theories now. A while back someone told me he was a taste bud. Then later I heard he was supposed to be a milkshake, which makes no sense whatsoever because he's purplish blue or whatever. It'd make more sense if he was pink or crap brown or something.
