Funny, I'm listening to them right now. Apparently they play often in LA. I really should go see them.

Have fun!

My goodness!
They were my favourite ska-band back in the day! I even saw them in Bristol once!

Hold on, are you seeing THE ENGLISH BEAT live? Or is it just Dave Wakeling & The English Beat.

I saw Dave Wakeling perform in 2003 with a bunch of nobodies and it was such a sham. They were even pretending to play the horn sections. Laaaaame.

To quote another 2-Tone era band, Madness... "You're an embarrassment"

OHMYGOD, you are SOOOOOO right!!!

Let me preface my comments with:
There is a casino in town who is featuring 80's bands for FREE every Friday night throughout the summer (i.e. General Public, English Beat, Dramarama, Flock of Seagulls, Tommy Tutone (sp?),etc.)... Two weeks ago, we went to see General Public... This was the show where I recognized the keyboardist as a guy off of Taxicab Confessions, who had picked up a groupie and was trying to get it on in the backseat... It was lame... We show up for English Beat and not only is it the same "house band" wearing the same outfits (pretending to do the horns via the keyboards), but it's the same fucking set list as General Public's set and he prefaced the songs with the same exact stories!!! LAME! LAME! LAME! It was a total sham!!! I was sooo pissed, stayed for 3 songs and beat it. You can only listen to the drawnout 10 minute version of "I Confess" once each decade and I have now heard it twice in a two week period. Puke!

I don't know why, maybe because this sort of thing has happened to me before, but this story cracks me up. I've been to a few shows in Seattle with these revival 80's, 70's, 60's bands and usually try to make the best of it by doing something stupid before I leave.

That way when I look back on it, I can at least have a laugh. :D

Thanks for sharing, glad to see this happens to other folk.

One time I discreetly flipped a quarter into a guitarist's mouth while he was making all those goofy mouth moves.....then slinked back to the bar. The song was, Oh Lord, Don't let me be Misunderstood.

Another time a buddy of mine filled a beer bottle with olive oil and put it right in line with the lead singers beers..it was MF'n hilarious when he took his swig during the guitar solo..

I'm less inclined to go to those shows now. I don't like to fight anymore...and many of those situations led to somebody else not laughing as much as us.

I seriously don't know why Wakeling is trying to decieve fans into thinking you're seeing the REAL English Beat when it's this group of pretenders. It's like the re-vamped Guns N' Roses. Ugh!

What also made the concert LAME was that he performed "Mirror in the Bathroom" TWICE. Once at the beginning and then towards the end they played it again ("People come in late and they usually miss this song, so we're doing it again" was Dave's excuse). Oh man, I could just cry. :(

For my own satisfaction, I sent him a nasty email...

TWICE??? If I had stuck around long enough, I may have been able to confirm whether or not he is still doing this... I totally wouldn't be surprised! And the band... jesus... to have the freaky looking dude from Taxicab Confessions (which I happened to google and found the episode he's on: Taxicab Confessions 6... just pathetic.

Jeez that sucks big time!

That's why I hate old bands getting together, trying to get the sparkle going again and it happens very rarely. That's why I refuse to go to see Bauhaus (if they ever came this way) or Echo and the Bunnymen revamped. There's too many memories to get them smudged.
I saw some pictures of Bay City Rollers doing a gig a couple of years ago and my, was that a good laugh!

MY EMAIL TO DAVE WAKELING:

To whom it may concern:
I would like to express my disappointment for a recent
show that I attended in Reno, Nevada. After seeing
what was supposed to be General Public two weeks prior
and looking oh so forward to seeing The English Beat,
I was beyond words when I saw the same exact band as
was billed as General Public, wearing pretty much the
same exact outfits, playing the same exact songs and
prefacing the songs with the same exact dialogue.
What used to be one of my favorite bands of all times
has become a House Band it seems with a bunch of
nobodies, fake horns and a terrible "lounge" sound.
It may as well have been the house band of the sleazy
casino it was billed in playing covers. Boo. Thumbs
down.

Major Disappointed Fan

HIS RESPONSE TO ME:

I thought it was very cheesy to book me under both
names. It was not my doing, and by the time I found
out there was nothing I could do but live with it.

The sound system belongs to the Casino.

The vast majority of the 600 crowd seemed to disagree
entirely with you. Form over substance is a deadly
trap. We played a variety of different songs, I wore a
different shirt, and was careful to introduce some new
dialogue! The horns are real sax's and trumpets
recorded to the digital hardrive. The nobodies you
mention include members of the Goo Goo Dolls and The
Supreme Beings of Leisure.

Sorry you felt cheated by your second free show in a
month, and on the strength of that I don't suppose
you'll ever come to another. You are free to be
disappointed.

Dave

I haven't heard Echo's stuff beyond the '80s, but I've read positive stuff about their latter day material...

The olive oil was already on the tables for salad dressing, but the idea of sneaking a bottle of olive oil around has me LMAO.

I read that smug response from your email, that was sort of the deal with some of the bands I'd see flowing thru Seattle, this holier than thou attitude was so lame, as was the music. I never once felt bad about the past exploits.

They made me pay, (the shows I went to cost $$$) I wasn't just going thru the motions when I made my $$$, so I expect the same from somebody claiming to be whoever they claim to be.

I never have figured out how a band could just get bad after 10, 20, 30, 40 years of playing...but it sure happens way to much.

Speaking of fake oldies acts, chalk one up for the Doors (http://news.yahoo.com/news?tmpl=story&cid=769&e=3&u=/nm/20050723/music_nm/leisure_doors_dc) original drummer John Densmore.
