Back in the day like 6 months ago? I'd have to agree with the rest of your statement though. The yellow one's were AWESOME, but the orange ones were weak as hell.

Me too. It must have been frustrating for the other pro-cyclists these last several years--to have been virtually shut out of the races. (Although maybe it'll be enough for them to say that they rode next to him. Maybe he challenged them to be better than they would have been otherwise.)

I don't know anything about Lance Armstrong other than the bits about his health and what he's done on these races. From what I know, his strength, determination, [sustained] athleticism inspire me.

Mostly I hate that my friends talk about him. I hate Sheryl Crow more.

Mostly I hate when people spend a dollar or two on some stupid product at the grocery and they think they've done their bit to improve the world. They think their bracelets and ribbons say "good person" but I see "sheep".

I give a lot of money to charities and it bothers me that the people I know who make a big deal out of "supporting" these causes tend to do nothing else.

On a related "sheep" comment, I'm continually surprised at people who give their zip code or telephone number out just because a clerk at a store asks for it. The look I get from the clerk when I say "no" in response to "can I have your zip code" says that I'm the rare troublemaker.

Yeah, I think it's amazingly boring. I can't believe that my friends follow it so closely. Sorry. I prefer when I don't know what's going to happen ahead of time.

I don't much care whether he's an ass in real life.

Kind of a silly thing to get upset about. :)

Maybe they have improved the world a bit.

Or maybe that one little act helped them to improve their attitude or affect a good one in someone else. Sometimes charitable thoughts/habits start with tiny acts like that. Especially with young people.

They think their bracelets and ribbons say "good person" but I see "sheep".

I don't judge them or what I think their motives are.

I give a lot of money to charities and it bothers me that the people I know who make a big deal out of "supporting" these causes tend to do nothing else.
Some people go far out of their way to do charitable stuff without letting anyone know about it and to actually hide it from others. "When you do a charitable deed, do not let your left hand know what your right hand is doing, that your charitable deed may be in secret."

Yes, exactly! I give large amounts to charity and don't wear jewelry to get credit for it. :p

The only causes where I publicize my involvement are the ones where the charity ASKS to use my name to raise more money from other lawyers in my community and the ones where a friend is trying to raise a huge chunk of money for AIDs so they have the internet registry to show how close she is to her goal and to guilt my other friends into matching my contribution. Both of these are amazingly effective, btw.

I think people should be judged, but it's more important that we judge ourselves, our motives, and our character pretty much all the time. I'm fascinated by people and what makes them tick. This ribbon stuff is just a new variation on an old theme, but I've paid a lot of attention to who have the ribbons and how they treat people less fortunate than themselves. It's been pretty much as I expected. (Not that I'm a saint--I'm as self-involved as anyone but at least I'm honest about it.) :)

BTW, I had a lot of various ribbons on my car last fall when working on various campaigns but stopped short of getting a fish. :D The great part about the ribbons is that they're magnets so I could put them on when campaigning and take them off when done each day. I have a Darwin fish but I can't put it on my car because of my job. :(

I hesitate to respond because I think I irk you no matter what. Plus, you argue for a living :) and I don't like to argue at all. But...

The quote, out of context, seems odd so I thought I'd clarify that I said this:
Some people go far out of their way to do charitable stuff without letting anyone know about it and to actually hide it from others.

in response to you having said this:
I give a lot of money to charities and it bothers me that the people I know who make a big deal out of "supporting" these causes tend to do nothing else.

I don't care how charity happens (whether it's overt or hidden). Sometimes entire attitudes change from a lone act, performed or observed. Even if the livestrong bands are trendy or are worn insincerely by some, I think good came of it and that's okay.

Not really! I just think we have a very different world view and set of values, and I think we read a lot of the same threads. Sorry. :o

I am reading a lot less threads in this section which should help.

In my real life, I'm pretty sick and tired of people who say things that sound good, but there is no follow through. Concepts that sound pretty but they mean nothing. I'm sick of talking and sick of committees and sick of meaningless statements. They DON'T make a positive difference and in fact they're harmful because people think they solved the problem but the problem is still there and bigger than ever. The support your troops things are fine because it makes the people with the ribbons feel good about themselves and it does no harm. But I'm sick of people who think they did something to help mankind because they threw a dollar in a bucket and picked up a poppy or they spent $3 on a ribbon and the money went to the chain store and the Chinese manufacturer. Some would say it's still positive because the person feels good but I'm not too worried about whether people feel good about themselves. I think people are far to self involved already. It's an epidemic. At was puzzles me the most is that I will never have kids and I care more about the future of my community than people with toddlers. It's getting worse as I start to focus on 2006 and the problems that affect my local community. I had a hell of a time getting some of my best-intentioned friends to do even small things in 2004 and 2006 is even more important. There are the most amazing old men and women doing things yet women 20-40 won't do a damn thing (except some of the moms in the intercity who are terrified at the school issues).

So this whole mess is coming through whenever I see a generic upbeat feelgood statement posted in response to what I see as a societal problem. And I never intend to address it to anyone specific, but to say that people in general need to get off their asses. I recently realized that it's not coming through and that saying anything of substance here is really silly, hence the reading less.
