View Full Version : Albums People Buy To Look Cool

I am always shopping for old vinyl and I've noticed a distinct trend. Most of the albums that were critically acclaimed in their time are in mint condition today. So I believe that a lot of people bought the albums in order to appear cool but found them difficult to listen to.

Consistently found in mint condition:
Stooges - Raw Power
Stooges - Fun House
lots of X
lots of Husker Du (this is Minneapolis after all)
Black Flag - Damaged
Velvet Underground - Velvet Underground
Clash - Sandinista!
anything Sonic Youth
anything The Smiths

Consistently found in much played condition:
anything Beastie Boys
anything Lou Reed (go figure)
anything Black Sabbath
Neil Young's hit LPs
anything Beatles (except the White Album)
anything Who
Pink Floyd's hit LPs

It's not a science. But I'll admit to buying the Velvet Underground and Nico when I was in college and then listening to it once. My Bob Seger LPs all appear to have been played. Often. :o

Sandinista!

How the heck is "Raw Power" (the record mix) difficult to listen to? Granted, the 1997 mix is a extreme, but one need only lower the volume to fix that.

And "Sandinista!" is hard to assimilate, but once you got it... dude, you're in nirvana (and not the piss-laden, overblown grunge clown one, either).

And the Smiths... they're suprisingly listenable. When I bought "Singles," I expected most of it to sound like "How Soon is Now?" or Pornography-era Cure. Much to my joy, they sounded like "Inbetween Days," with the minimal emphasis on synths.

Anyhoo... hi.

All the X at the store I go to are so worn, they're almost transparent. I did find Costello's "King Of America" in mint condish, though. Didn't buy it. I hate that album.

Only ONCE??

Sadly, these days it seems most of my recent purchases for the last number of months have only been spun once or so. Not because that's all I can stomach from all those albums to look "cool" over, but because there's just so much music on my plate, that I run through 'em all once and that's all I have time for. :(

Oh well, at least I do make a point of giving 'em a listen. My Dad has stuff he's bought from at least 10+ years ago that are still unopened.

I've got a friend out west who has an enormous collection of both CDs and vinyl.

There's a subset of pristine vinyl in his collection and it's that way just because he wants to have pristine copies of particular albums. It means something to him to just have certain albums, so he goes out of his way to find excellent copies of them and preserves their excellent condition by not playing or even handling them. When it comes to knowing the works in this subset, he does. Thoroughly. He just doesn't play the vinyl out of a certain respect for them.

I don't get hot for it myself but it was usually fun to go shopping around with him.

It's interesting to me to hear about the different things people shop for when they visit other cities. I tend to just find myself in local bookstores.

When my Dad is in Chicago (which is every year), he ALWAYS hits up the record shops. Whether they're the small indie stores or the monster mega-chains... he does it all.

When I went with him last year, literally once we got off the plane and went to our hotel room, he took us to the nearest record shop on Michigan Avenue. Before dinner, too.

I mean it was wonderful to walk away with piles of great music, but the days me and my brother just hit the town alone, we mostly avoided the music stores (save for one or two small excursions). Chi-town is a wonderful place, you gotta actually SEE the city, too. :p

Don't let Chicago get in the way of buying your sides! That town is basically one giant rack and bin holder for Albums and CD's.

I bought Winger to look cool. It's fucking working like a charm. ChicksDigIt!

I might have to PM you about this. One of my moms friends apparently has a ton of old 70s rock and such some of which has never been listened to and shes looking to sell most of it.
