I leave for Zurich soon and will be back in mid-August.

I don't have flowery handwriting like some people here. mickill
But I would be happy to send a postcard to you if you want one.
PM your address to me. I'll print it, delete it, and then destroy the printout after I write the postcard. :)

I am not at all used to travelling without friends, so this will be interesting.
I am a map illiterate and I know it. But I've been studying the area and the language so I should be okay.
I plan to disavow all association with the U.S.; I've packed nothing that's red/white/blue and I've all but mastered my Canadian accent.

Once I get there, I'll have evenings to myself and some of the weekends too.
I do plan to completely throw myself into the middle of the Street Parade.
If you see footage of it on CNN, watch out for me.
I'll be the one who will be dressed.

xoxo and that doesn't mean that I'm flirting with you :)

Zurich! Great place. I wish you lots of fun. Too bad you're not flirting with me though but I'll survive ;)
I think I know who you are now!

See, that's sweet.

Yes, be kind to me on the handwriting analysis. I rarely handwrite anything. :)

I introduced myself very nicely. I made a thread about it! Just read it, it says who I am :)
You're right...I missed that thread. I'm sorry!

Welcome to here and thanks for the happy travelling wishes! (You did what I did when you first came here--you looked around for awhile before buying in. :))

Have a great time ee....don't worry about traveling alone. There's a certain dignity to it. (y)

That's so true (from what I remember :)).

It's been eons since I've travelled without friends or my kid. My travels for the last maybe 10 years have mostly been to beachs or on camping trips.

This'll be different.

Thanks, Jbernas (and everyone who is saying such sweet things in PMs too).

Who's gonna make my Peanut Butter and Jelly's? I'll tell you one thing, Rosie is not going to make them. I think she wants to kill me.

You can get them at the Pittsburgh Mills food court. :)

Seriously, that mall looks like it will kick ass. (I'm waiting for the day when instead of stores, malls will have indoor gardens and strolling paths, running & biking tracks, swimming pools, healthy restaurants, & neat bookstores. Basically, I want Berkeley under a roof and I want it on the East Coast. That's a mall that I'd go to.)

When I read this, I immediately thought of my own handwriting. I didn't see the hidden jibe, so I was thinking, So far so good. Nobody mentioned it, not even TAL. Excellent.

Anyhow, make sure you brush up on your German befor you go, ree-ree. I'm not going to say bye just yet, though.

Cool, Zurich is a nice city.
Don't miss the opportunity (if you have it) to visit other places, you can go everywhere in Switzerland from there in a few hours. Have fun!! :)

I've read about that. Amazing.

I plan to sort of just take it as it comes. I have some ideas of things that I want to do, but I'll probably just see what I feel like doing on a given day when I have free time and then just find it. I also just want to meet the people there.

There are three people at the Hallenstadion and at my hotel who helped me get the trip together and while it started out just with phone calls to confirm dates/participation, etc., it shifted and they send email to me now to talk...I know about their families and school and work. How nice is that. I plan to bring them chocolate from here. The Swiss so need that.

I'll add also Berner Rösti and Raclette, but don't try to eat that or fondue on a really warm summer day....you're gonna sweat chesse and feel shitty for the rest of the day.

No--not work related at all. I'm paying for it myself. All of it. Hence the the youth hostel.

I love the watch thing and maybe some of our swiss miss cocoa but that swiss miss outfit...man, that's really pushing it. I could do the braids, though, but not that aprony thing.

I'm taking a class while I'm there--I've been trying to get to this class for a few years and this is the first time that it would work out in terms of my schedule. It basically runs from 8:30-4:30 with a break for lunch and lasts for several days.

I might still write to Hornblower to get tips and pointers on yodeling. I'm assuming he knows something about that.

Awwww, me too! Hopefully, bears won't munch on me while I'm there. That would suck.

I'm bringing a laptop and I practiced logging in from an internet cafe at B&N the other night so I'm good to go. I should be on here for some of that time--I just won't be talking as much. (I hear some of you--one in particular--breathing deep & happy sighs of relief. :))

YAY on the handwriting side--I don't remember what I wrote, though!

Today I wrote a card--a real card--in a post office way
on the outskirts, where no one speaks much English.
I wanted a lovey dovey hearty card
so I bought one with hearts and crap on it. It turns
out that it's for an anniversary or a wedding but oh well.

Anyway, I wrote a message inside and in it, I wanted to
say I LOVE YOU in German. So I turned to a little
girl next to me and, using a combination of
German and sign language, I tried to ask her how
to say I LOVE YOU. She didn't understand, but her
dad did.

He told me and I didn't get it. (Actually in
hindsight, that was damned funny because he repeated
it to me 3 or 4 times--he said it with a flat affect,
so hopefully it wasn't looking to everyone else like
I was jilting him or something.) Anyway, I asked
him to write it down. He did--right inside the card.
And on one of the words, which had an "i" in it, he
dotted it with a little [German] heart.

I will have a hard time leaving here.
The people are amazing.

Ich liebe dich....if I remember correctly.

I should have known you'd know.
You taught me about the big B in German. :)

A woman in the hotel across the alleyway is having
a very good time. Repeatedly. And in a somewhat
dubious sounding way. :o

I know...I'm confused too. I think this one
got resurrected when some people posted
after postcards started to arrive (because this
is the thread where I offered to send them out).

It's gorgeous here. I can't say it enough. I love
the people. It'll be hard not to ever move here
but I hear that it's very expensive for the rent.
(A one-bedroom, living room, kitchen, and
bath style of apartment goes for 5000f/month.
Which is maybe $4500/month. Huch! :))

Ich liebe dich....if I remember correctly.

Yeah that's right...that is one of the few things I know in German. When I hang out with my German friends and they all get going in their conversation I just throw in the occasional "Ich Liebe dich!" so I don't feel left out
