who has this album? i got it simply cuz of how awesome Mellow Gold was and certainly did not expect what was in it. But i guess the point of it was to be pretty much a spoof right? If anything, it confused the hell out of me, thinking of theories about why Beck would record something as silly as this one, although songs like painted eyelids made it seem as if he was more serious about the whole thing for a couple of minutes. I suppose his spontaneity/craziness wasnt as well known as it is today and it all made less sense. its been wierd having that thing among my cd´s.
What did you think when you listened to it?
ps- anyone heard that old "Fume" single?
pps-either the music forum is A+ today or im feeling very opinative at the moment

*raises hand*
and guess on what format ;)
It's been a while since I listened to it (had to put it on spinning now), bought it when it came out. I remember enjoying it quite alot, along with A Western Harvest Field by Moonlight. I remember Beck playing Sleeping bag live back then.
I really enjoy Beck's different sides, and that's why he signed the record deal with Geffen so he could continue his "experiments" on smaller labels.

well yea, i cant exactly call it a "bad" album since its sort of uncategorizable and too wierd/different to be bad...like you said, one of his "experiments"...so im not saying that i didnt exactly like it, silly can be good...but just an ok good...a wierd ok good

Beck? More like "Shit."
Quit listening to new twats. Instead of dealing with that half-wit, pissant clown, pick up a Stooges album.

My dear Sandinista, I grew up on Raw Power. Iggy is one of the artists that I've seen live most of the times in my life.
And this album (OFITG) came out in '94, that's only five years after 1989....

That's five years too many. Five years of stagnation and depravation. Five years of extrapolated shittyness. Five years of irreversible decline. Five years is too many.
Don't let thy mind be tainted by newness; reach farther back and grab some pre-89 material that's worth your while.

ive just been listening to it after freaking, what, 5 years, and the best songs out of it are in the last half, especially cianide breath mind, hollow log, asshole, outcome, 14 rivers 14 floods, etc.....and ive seen the land beyond sounds like a cover, doesnt it?
it also sounds like a patriotic song youd sing before starting class in elementary school right after saying the pledge. i dont know, these things just appear in my head.

What the fuck do The Stooges have to do with Beck? It's Beck, for crying out loud. Why are you even comparing Beck to Iggy? Are you seriously THIS clueless about music? That's like jumping into a discussion about mountain bikes and talking about your badass car. Can you just not add your "two cents" to every single thread you come across?
Maybe people would start respecting your opinion a little if you actually started making sense. I'm sure you've turned more people AWAY from pre-90's music than you've actually turned onto it.

By the way, yeah, I own this album. I don't hate it or anything. I don't think I like very much of Beck's music. I enjoy Mellow Gold quite a bit, though.

One is good, the other is hogwash. That's all that matters. I'm offering a viable alternative for those who have been deluded by the mediocre scumbags who claim that they make "music."

Yeah well, when you interject with something completely irrelevant rather than say, refer to a similar artist, one that may have clearly inspired Beck's actual style of music, then who's really going to give a shit about what you said?

I'm pretty sure bgrrrlie has more pre-89 music running through her system than anyone else here combined.
There's no need to tell us to get albums we already own, too.

this is one of my favourite albums at the moment. i had forgotten about it. but being vaguely disappointed by 'guero', i went back and havent put it down since. i dont understand how you would think this is a joke album. id say it's one of his more straightforward sensible albums.

well ill tell you why i would say its a joke album. not joke as in bad but joke as in not serious, as in having recorded songs when he was fooling around with his friend, cuz they seem so not rehearsed and home recorded. it sounds like b/w songs hes eating a sandwich and someone is watching tv in the room next door and in b/w takes they go to watch the end of an hbo movie theyre missing.
and like i said before, it probably gave me that idea since mellow gold wasnt so folky and had a more edited sound and was basically different. but after all these years weve seen hes a guy who changes his music from album to album, its what he does. but OFITG being his 2nd (well known) cd, i wasnt aware of his whole changing concept, so it struck me as more of a surprise than saying "its beck", like we would say now.
its an ok album to me, i never said i didnt like it. but i like his more serious stuff.

I think it's a gorgeous album, get that and stereo Pathetic Soul Manure for Rowboat and one of my favourites, Satan Gave Me A Taco. But yeah, Mellow Gold is bloody brilliant.

Wow, you used an equal sign. Is that supposed to garner credibility? I've got news for you, Copernicus:

You're so funny with these comparisons. You should try starring sitcoms instead of being such an ass in this mb.
