there is a great song about Canada - I forget who sings it -

one of the lyrics is -

"they say eh, instead of what or duh - that's the mighty power of Canada"

anyways - my dad is from ottawa and when we went on vacation there - I did'nt hear anyone say "eh."

"tom is a good friend of mine"

"He stinks eh"

Funny, I never say it typing, but away from the computer when I use words, it comes out in moderation. Maybe it's because I had a gun (in the form of the IB programme) to my head to prevent me from saying it.

I do that too. I go "Oh, yah?" instead of "eh?". My friend's relatives live in Minnesota and told her "Yah, we saw Fargo and they say we talk weird, and I said, no that's the Canadians," completely in the Fargo accent.

Myself, I don't say "eh." If at all, it's once in a blue moon. I actually do the American thing, which is "huh" at the end of sentences.

However, a LOT of Canadians do say "eh" very regularly. So yeah, you could say we use the word a lot.

eh is mostly used instead of the word " right "

ex: you're goin to the movies, eh?

also it can turn a declarative sentence into a question

ex: i can beat him up

ex: i can beat him up, eh?

Occasionally it can be used as a replacement for the word " what "

ex: me: i will in a sec

mom: eh?

me: i'll call in a minute

"eh" can also be seen as a noun of sorts and exchanged for titles such as "dude" and "man"

"hows it goin, eh?"

"where did you buy that, eh?"

ToucanSpam
07-19-2005, 03:57 PM
"How's she goin', bye?" is very common here.

"How's it going, eh?" is a more relative variation of the previous example.

it can actually be quite charming.

Newfies are extremely docile, happy, friendly people. I have yet to meet a nasty newfie. They speak in a very unique accent not able to express on the internet. Naturally, people think that because of their grammatical differences to 'normal english', they are stupid. Not the case.

Why the negative attitude to your friendly Canadian neighbours..?

Most Canadians live in Cities.. We do not have moose for pets.

Come visit.. Im sure you'll have a good time if you visit a major city. We know how to party.
