My ma was a Bobby Darin fan; I have memories of her and my dad singing BD songs together in the car. I wanted to see that movie just for her but it came and went quickly and that made me think that maybe it wasn't worthwhile. Maybe I'll put it in my netflix queue & see it with my dad.

Wow -- I hadn't seen a single positive notice until this one.

Let's see... I like plenty of movies that are widley considered pretty great but not namechecked as masterpieces...

Birdy
Hail, the Conquering Hero
The King of Comedy (Scorsese)
Defending Your Life
The Story of Adele H.
La Chienne

...but GREAT movies that get middling to poor reviews?

The Age of Innocence (criminally regarded as "fussy")
Avalon (Levinson)
Grace of My Heart

I rarely read movie reviews, so I don't know what's critically underrated or under-acclaimed either before or after seeing a movie.

About the closest I come to knowing what's gotten some acclaim is when the academy announces its nominees (and I don't particularly think that's a good measure of a movie's worth anyway).

"The English Patient sucked."

There's a particular flavor of movie that appeals to me; the academy rarely recognizes these. Like Waking Ned Divine or Sideways (which, surprisingly, the Academy did like). I enjoy quiet movies with small plots--like Wild Parrots, which probably won't go anywhere at the Oscars, but I liked it a lot.

I did like Gladiator and American Beauty.
I do like commercial and good blockbustery movies but they too often get the noms/attention over more deserving but less blockbustery types of movies.

The remake of 'House on Haunted Hill'

I have seen this and I don't remember it being any good. I do remember, though, that the way it was shot--something about the way the movie felt and looked--scared my kid into sleepless nights. We wound up setting up a tent in the living room and camping out in it. It was his way of saying that he didn't want to be alone while feeling like he was too old to come into bed with me. We popped popcorn and roasted marshmallows on top of the burners on the oven. It took a few nights of that for him to get that movie out of his system.

Yup -- Unbreakable is a great one.

And, for other great BW movies, let us not forget the first Die Hard movie. Alan Rickman was AMAzing.

Okay --

Not enough people know McCabe and Mrs Miller (Altman movie) which is a crying shame.

Also, check 3 Women.

Also, Truffaut's Stolen Kisses which had the nerve to be a slapstick Antoinne Doinel movie (sacre bleu!), and is unjustifiably dismissed.

Hitchcock's second version of The Man Who Knew Too Much also gets glossed over, which is a shame. Doris Day is fantastic in that, and has one of the two most authentic nervous breakdowns I've seen on film (the number one spot goes to Agnes Moorehead in The Magnificent Ambersons).

Ishtar gets unfairly bashed, but it's not a great movie.

Dazed and Confused is much, much better than its rep would make you think. The lead is a bit amateur, but it kinda works -- it just bugs me that his go-to gesture is pinching the bridge of his nose.

After Hours is pretty underrated.

So's The Underneath -- and it doesn't help that Soderbergh joins in on the bashing.

King of the Hill (Soderbergh) is a minor masterpiece. Look for a young Adrian Brody in that one. His first appearance made my girlfriend-at-the-time gasp.

Why have people forgotten all about Dreamchild? Beats me. Terrific movie.

Don't forget -- Peter Brooks' version of Lord of the Flies is very, very good.

Albert Brooks' Modern Romance had damned well better come out on DVD yesterday. There's a scene where he takes a lude and the camera just stays on him for one long take that's so funny it hurts.

Woody Allen's The Purple Rose of Cairo is arguably his best film to date.

And don't forget Stephen Frears' The Grifters. Hooba hooba!

I haven't seen either one, but those are two of the most universally-panned movies of the last 15 years. I'd be interested in reading why you like them. Seriously -- all I ever hear is bad stuff.

I think Rodriguez is the only one of those directors who'll fess up to Four Rooms, mainly because that's when he got the idea for Spy Kids.

i liked them because they were different! i like a movie that you cant tell whats going to happen next. i dont know anything about spy kids but that is kind of sad! i hope it was not the same kids as the ones in 4 rooms cause that is just cheezy and not in a good way!

He told Harvey Weinstein "Spy Kids" and Harv agreed to make the movie on the basis of those two words.
