he makes money through the well being of the club so why would he ruin it,,,now if he makes all the decisions concerning the actual players then yeah you might be screwed

well being of the club?
i doubt he'd know what that was. if he lived in england for more than 5 years, he might know.

i can see bad things happening though.

rich folks buy sports franchises for two reasons: to make money, or to build their allready large ego

even if this guy knows nothing about the game, he could be in it for the money/ego thing, and he could be willing to pour more money into the team to make them better, and let someone with knowledge make the calls

Get a good job with good pay and you’re okay.

New car, caviar, four star daydream,

in fairness as much as i dislike man u, and would love to see awful things happen to them, i just can't see it happening. they are the biggest name in world football, thats a base that wont go easily, and glazer is a very successful business man. now, put 2 and 2 together on that.

i know the deal seems a wee bit bonkers, but i dont think many people have considered the fact that glazer is a billionaire, and he became a billionaire for a reason.

why is it such a big deal that an american is buying the team?

His nationality isn't really the issue, unfortunately it's the thing that's been picked up on the most in the recent months as those opposed to his takeover have become increasingly more desperate to stop it happening.

The main problems with his takeover are that he hasn't used his own money to fund it, he's borrowed huge amounts, and once he passed a 75% stakeholding in the club, he was able to transfer this borrowing onto the accounts of the club, a sum rumoured to be approximately £790million. So in essence he has taken the most profitable sporting business anywhere in the world, and riddled them with a debt the like of which has never been seen before in football or any other sport.

To clear this debt, quite simply, prices will have to rise. The early figures quoted claim that ticket prices to see United play will rise by 49% within five years, bringing them in line with the most expensive ticket prices in English football, which are to see Chelsea. However, Chelsea's average season ticket holder earns nearly £11,000 a year more than the average United season ticket holder, and so, to fuel the ego and the pockets of the Glazer family, it is the average football fan that will have to pay to service a debt of Glazer's engineering. To see United play at Old Trafford is a fantastic spectacle, it's a wonderful stadium and a wonderful team, but less and less will be able to afford to go and watch them.

Also, Glazer has been rumoured to be looking at ways to change the way in which football is broadcast on TV, looking at ways to make more money for United from any deals brokered with the TV companies. Pay-per-view matches would cost the fans even more, but this is probably a long way off, as the former United board were party to a long term TV deal which I believe lasts until 2010 at the earliest. After that deal is finished though, there is every chance that he will attempt to press for higher deals for the larger clubs, meaning more money for the bigger teams, and less for the crackpot, run-of-the-mill crap like Birmingham City. Who I happen to support.

Or of course, all this could never happen, and Glazer could run down the debt sensibly by sending United out on global money-spinning tours like the previous board did, and by creating a successful team that wins prizes and plaudits all over the globe, while he himself does what every football club owner does, and that is spend an awful lot of money, for very little return.

In short, in case you can't really be too bothered with reading all of that, people are worried that an American, who stereotypically know very little about "our game", is going to come in and change everything. And we like our little game to stay the same as it always was.

You can't say America owns hip-hop. Sure New York was the place to be as far as hip hop was concerned in the 80s, but a lot of the feeling and attitude of hip-hop came out of the punk movement, which came straight out of England and English culture.

Haha nice one man you just made the KKK.

Punk was everywhere in 70's/80's New York. Yep, even those uneducated, uncultured "ghetto black dudes" were into it. Hip-Hop replaced punk as the youth's music of choice, and was almost a direct result of it.

I don't know why I have to explain this to you, you're American. Do you even listen to hip-hop? Learn some shit man, for real.

What do you mean? Dance music came out of hip-hop. Hip hop was first, in the late 70s. Dance music came about early 80s. When you say RnB, do you mean real Rhythm and Blues, eg Bobby Womack, Al Green, or do you mean shit like Prince and Michael Jackson? Either way, hip hop didn't come out of it.

hip hop music was originally dance music, meaning music that was supposed to make you dance.
The hip hop that you could call "music" didn't come about till like 5 years after the hip hop movement began though. For real, b-boys didn't start popping up in clubs till like '78 '79, a long time after people started MCing over drum beats and wearing Adidas.

Don't you think it's kind of irrevelent how much someone pays for a sports team. It's like any other investment. In 10 years down the road the price that's paid today will seem almost laughable. The value of the team will increase, that's a given.

They wil probably build a new stadium with loads of luxury boxes that they will sell to corporations,
They will sell the naming rights of the stadium to a corporation for about a third of the price of building the stadium,
Another third will come from the local government.
The other third of the funding will come from the fans in the form of a "Seat Licensing Fee" which will be about $3000.00 a seat, just for the right to buy season tickets for that seat. This will cause all the low-income fans to give up thier seats to the wealthier fans who can afford to pay the fee.
Ticket prices will rise almost every year.
It's almost a license to print money.

This is the way it's done in America with our Football teams.

im more interested in this hip-hop origin debate now...

I have to say, to say hip-hop "came from" punk is completely wrong. The punk attitude might have slightly interested and influenced some prominent figures in hip-hop in the early 80's (Fab 5 Freddy, Afrika Bambataa) the music has it's roots in funk/r'n'b.

Kool Herc (INVENTED HIP-HOP TM!!!!) started the "breaks" crazy, by taking the instrumental breakdown in the middle of records (mainly James Brown incidentally) and extending it by playing the same break on another copy. The "national anthem" of hip-hop as he said him self was the Incredible Bongo Band's version of "Apache", everyones favourite break!

He werent spinnin' no Sex Pistols!

Nationally USA ranks ahead of England so maybe Americans know a little something about the game (http://football.guardian.co.uk/News_Story/0,1563,1532425,00.html?gusrc=rss)

franscar

Absolutely nobody in the world of football takes any sort of notice of the FIFA rankings, the structure used to create these fictitious league tables is about as watertight as a collinder.

The USA is probably the world's fastest improving national team at the moment, and had a very good world cup last time round in 2002, but the world rankings place them ahead of a multitude of teams that are simply far, far better. The U.S. and Mexico both rank so highly because they spend the majority of their time playing competitive games against the Carribean countries, who, without exception, suck balls.

Fade2White
07-20-2005, 11:04 PM
franscar is completly right, our rating has sky rocketed because in the last month weve been tallying up WCQ wins (which give you lots of points in the standings) against Panama and Costa Rica. We've also been winning games in the Gold Cup against really poor squads. We jumped a lot of spaces because while we were doing this the teams we jumped ahead were playing in the Confederations Cup and losing to world powers like Brazil and Argentina. However, the US is defenitally and improving soccer nation that can play with any country in the world and you don't need a coca cola ranking to tell you that.
