your talking to someone on the phone and they click over put you on hold for what seems like forever. I've been on hold for like 5 minutes so far and I'm thinking about hanging up even though it's long distance. I'm just wondering who would be calling this person at this time of night. Humm?

yup.. back when people actually called me, my best friend/girlfriend put me on hold for 10 minutes....

I've never done that to anybody. Nor anybody has ever done that to me.

Maybe it's because I don't call anybody or receive calls much.

I only like to call someone when I feel like it, only when I know the conversation will be interesting. That basically almost never happens though.:p

back when i was younger, i always answered call waiting... now that i am older (and have caller id), i rarely switch over and leave anyone on hold... it is very rude, especially if you are the one that called long distance and the other person's phone call is now racking up your bill...

Yeah, I'm getting to where I hate cell phones. Like out in public, people are usually always on their phones and you can't go anywhere without hearing one ringing. I mean, what are people talking about that's so damn important? Then, they have all these gadgets and stuff on them that you don't need. And I can't stand it when my friends will call just to be calling pretty much. Like, my friend called me and I'm digging around for my phone and can't find it and she says, "I'm getting ready to pull up to your house...I'll just come to the door." I'm thinking, "Did you have to call me to tell me that?" Just ring the door bell...I'll hear you. (lb)

Can you imagine how heinous it will be should they start to allow cell phones on flights? My god! Some people are actually saying that it won't be any different than people having a conversation sitting next to each other, but when I think of the 2% of passengers that actually exchange words versus the other 98% of people who are traveling alone and who have cell phones - it's gonna be awful!

At places like grocery stores, I always feel badly when salespeople have to ring up customers who won't stop talking on their cell phones. If the customer has to sign for the purchase, it's physical comedy to watch them try to

answer the cashier about whether it's credit/debit
balance the phone while they sign for the credit
carry the bags out all while...

maintaining that cell phone conversation, which, because they're shouting when they're talking, everyone can hear and it's usually BORING. If you're going to do all that shit, at least talk about something that'll be of interest to half the people in the store. And give up the midi-file ring tones.

I cannot stand being on hold for a long time. I also cannot stand when the person on the phone who called me (or asked me to call them) is in the middle of something or near a bunch of other people to the point that they are half-talking to me and half-talking to them. I always say "I'll let you go" and I hear "oh no, it's fine!" then they keep talking to others or getting interrupted and there are a lot of "what? huh? what did you say?" about 10 times during the conversation.

I only use the phone to either A) Coordinate plans or B) Have an actual conversation (it could be about nothing, but a conversation where both parties are focused on talking to each other).

Blah!

Oh you impatient bitches the rest of the world should just stop and start for you when you want to talk and shut up for you when you want it to be quiet. So you had to wait 5 whole minutes to resume boring the other person to death! So is it absolute torture to have to endure listening to another person's conversation? Suddenly you guys are the Emily Post nazis?

Last week, I had to call the bank and I went through the funness of "press 1 for x" or "2 for y" and eventually got routed to Rhode Island where I talked with someone who, it turns out, was mopping floors. She was nice--I totally had a non-banking conversation with this person.

That apparently happened because I called outside of banking hours.

When I did call during normal hours, they put me into that system again and I pressed 1s and 3s and 7s and then I got disconnected.

That happened so many times that I knew which numbers to type in before the recording finished saying the first syllable of each message.

When I finally got a real person, I was joyful and told him how happy I was to have a real person because the phone system was fucked UP. I got silence. I remember snorting. Then I told him what I wanted and he said, "Let me put you on hold a sec."

And you know what happened after that.

When I called back and got someone else and she said that she wanted to put me on hold, I pleaded, literally begged her not to disconnect me.

She didn't. She told me to come in to see her.
And when I did, she was already gone for the day.

Fuckers.

Oh yeah, the half and half conversations...I can't stand those. And usually the person is already engaged in a conversation with a person when they decide to call you, too. They'll be in the middle of talking, while they're dialing a number.

I try to use my phone just for emergencies. But, actually I'm really bad about using my cell instead of the house phone and my bills have been ridulous lately. I'm like always going over my minutes.

I peronally don't want things to stop and start just for me, but if they are busy, I rather say "okay talk to you later" and talk to them when they are less busy vs. them saying "oh no it's okay I want to talk" but then they keep talking to people around them.

Just call me when you are less busy. It's not like I have life and death issues to talk about, but still. I even hate being on the phone if others are talking to me and I ask the person on the phone if I can call them back later.

I never answer the other line. I didn't want it, but it came with the phone service. When it beeps through I just ignore it until it goes away. Most of the time, I am talking to the person I want to be talking to at that time. What a concept.

The self righteous indignation you have is justifiable when the rest of the world is so obtuse and inconsiderate, you delicate angels it's a wonder you have the composure to even discuss these social atrocities. *suhkazm*

How spoiled do you think we sound when we complain and whine about cell phones and stores and driving cars with cell phones? I mean think of the convenience we live with that we even have these modes of connecting to other people and ease of travel and communication and experiences shopping where the biggest hassle is overhearing someone else talk while they sign their credit card receipt for all their readily available groceries?

well now isent that the problem? all these "conveniences" have made the world not appreciate anything and forget almost everything, like common curtsey, and readily available food. its nice to get in your car and be able to go somewhere but maybe there wouldnt be so much obesity if we walked maybe we would discover alot more if we walked, if you only got to talk to someone once a week or once a month i'm sure the conversation would be much more meaningful. there would be less bullshit in the world and we would only care about things that really mattered. so how does the song go "and if you dont like it then fuck off" or is it fuck you. i'll bitch about the "conveniences" untill they stop making them or untill they stop making people so rude and mean.

I love call waiting when I'm on a call with someone and need a good excuse to get off the call. "Hold please." 5 minutes later, if they're still holding, I'll click back and say, "I'll be right back." 5 more minutes and they usually hang up.

Oh, so you're implying that they really wanted to get off the phone with me, huh? Like the person I was on the phone with was this cute guy that I really like and he's just not that in to me, so he was really hoping that I would hang up.

Well, maybe...or maybe not.

Or, then again, maybe I'm reading way too much into you're comment and it really has nothing to do with me. :p
