i wonder if the south is the whole reason why coke is still around. everyone i know prefers pepsi, unless they are drinking it with jack daniels or bacardi...

jabumbo

its interesting to see how pennsylvania is pretty much divided right down the middle, and in the end, they almost balance out in the total

and then you look at north carolina, and think what the hell is wrong with those people?

well, call me crazy but most of the time when I ask for a carbonated drink, I just call it by name, "coke", "dr. Pepper", "hey could I have a sip of your Mountain Do?", "yes I will have another glass of Champange."

However when I lived in Eastern Washington it was "pop". even the champage. most of the time we'd mix it with coke or sprite. NOOOOO! I'm kidding. come on, that's gross!

jabumbo
07-20-2005, 11:18 PM

I always ask "do you have coke or pepsi products" and if they have pepsi products the waiter will look all sheepish and say "pepsi" in a small voice. And my eyes will lock with my lunch pal and I say "GREAT! We'll have some Dew!"

TWO restaurants I go to have the audacity to have neither coke nor pepsi products. Their cola is foul but I forget what it's called.

I've been putting in long hours lately. So when the cleaning lady emptied the 4 large/venti coffee containers out of my trash at work this afternoon, she gave me a pitiful look. But do you know what? I've been sleeping fine! (y) Apparently more caffeine and more stress was the answer.

I think Canadians all call it "pop." It seems a lot of the North of the United States does the same. Once you go south, you hillbillies start calling it "soda."

I've never said "soda" in my entire life, unless I am referring to our soda stream which produces foul cheap and nasty pop.

insertnamehere
07-21-2005, 06:53 AM
pop sounds stupid. calling ANYTHING soda-ish "coke" that isnt is completely stupid. if you have to use something generic, say "soda".

when we write things on our grocery list, we just put "drinks" and thats assumed to be coke for me and whatever the hell my dad drinks for him.

i despise pepsi, and thats the most popular one as far as i can tell where i live (north carolina)

and yes, what the hell IS wrong with these people?

HEIRESS

Beth

i say coke, regardless of what it is. it's like how tissues became known by the brand name kleenex, or cotton swabs being called q-tips. i don't think it's that odd.

i do clarify at a restaurant by asking for diet coke.

Pop?? Thats a sound (not your dad, not coke or pepsi!!). Soda?? Thats basically fizzy water...somewhat like sparkling mineral water. Coke?? Thats acceptable for cola products but you can't call a lift, fanta, sprite or lemonade (the australian form) coke. Thats just rediculous.

Soft Drinks is where its at. Or fizzy drinks like Zorra said.

Another term for coke here is gut-rotter.

seeing as i basically only drink coke, all is usually say is coke.
but if i was referring to some other brand in general terms, i would say pop...

it goes like this
"i want a coke" <---- as that is all i want
"there some pop in the fridge" <------if its anything other than coke

the map would be really easy to make if you had all your data in an excel sheet. you just have to know how to use GIS. i could make that map in about 20 minutes if i had the data...

I think I started drinking Mountain Dew when I was a kid because my parents hated its color and so of course I insisted on drinking it and got hooked.

I was eating with a bunch of people my age and mentioned that Tony Hawk had a cameo in the Lords of Dogtown movie and they all went "who's Tony Hawk?"

A year or so ago, a friend of mine was diagnosed with MS. :(
To prepare for the diagnosis (which is long and arduous), she had to have a couple of spinal taps. :( :(

I researched bunches of things for her on the Web about this and found out that after you have a spinal tap, you should drink Mountain Dew to avoid the bad headache that usually follows those tests.

After her first ST, she didn't do the dew and had the bad headache; the second time, she did and didn't (she did do the dew and didn't get the bad headache).

It could have been a placebo or just the caffeine from MD or some other factor, but she was happy not to have had that headache, which Kim said was pretty bad.

Its not really like mountain dew at all....Its basically like lemonade, as the Americans know it, mixed with lemonade, as we know it. If that makes any sense. But yeah I dont get the mountain dew comparison
