smokin cones isn't a term I've ever seen an american use, maybe that's a new one for you. i think you use bowl instead of cone. I usually just call it weed, but refer to smoking as "having a few cones"

i don't think you have to be particularly affluent to afford it down here, there's plently of dole bludgers out there getting stoned thanks to the government

Some of the people I know who are in their 50s and 60s were typical 1960s commune types. They don't look the part at all now but they're still hippies at heart. Which means they're probably still lighting up but that they can probably afford the good stuff now and maybe have just learned to hide it a little better. :)

I know an 80 year old millionaire who loves to break out a red bong and get high whenever I come to visit, but I'm only one of a handful of people who even know he gets high. He's on museum boards and hangs out witha bunch of snooty conservatives, but unbenoced to them he gets high. So ah yeah...there's a lot more people out there getting high than you know about. All ages, all races.

I remember one time high school a bunch of us went over this dude's house to smoke. I didn't know him all that well but my friends did so it seemed cool. So we're hangin out gettin the bong out to smoke and all the sudden his dad comes home. He's this middle aged white dude in a suit and tie, and I'm like "oh shit we're fucked". He sits down takes off the tie and is like "Okay who's packin, I'll match whatever you guys got". We got stoned and I played Tecmo Bowl on the old Nintendo with that old dude for like 2 hours...true story
