Suspected Suicide Bomber Shot Dead on Tube (http://news.scotsman.com/index.cfm?id=1667862005)
A SUSPECTED suicide bomber was shot dead on the London Underground today. Marksmen opened fire as terrified passengers were evacuated from the platform at Stockwell Tube station just after 10am.

Alarmed onlookers said they saw police, some in plain clothes, chasing a man before shooting an Asian man as he tried to board a train.

They described seeing the suspect pushed to the ground and shot five times at close range.

Police have been given orders to shoot to kill if they believe someone is about to detonate a bomb.

Unconfirmed reports suggested the dead man was involved in yesterday's attacks in London.

If the suspect is confirmed to be a suicide bomber, it would mark the fifth attempted terrorist attack on Lo ndon in less than a day.

Tube services on the Victoria and Northern Lines were suspended following the shooting at the request of police.

At about the same time, armed officers surrounded the East London Mosque in Whitechapel following a bomb threat, although the area was quickly declared safe.

At Stockwell, witness Mark Whitby described seeing police shoot the man five times at close range after he had jumped on a train. The train was standing in the station with its doors open when he saw an Asian man run on, pursued by three plainclothes officers.

The man tripped and was also pushed to the floor and one of the officers shot him five times, said Mr Whitby, who had been sitting on the Tube train reading his paper, as it was stationary with its doors open.

People were heard shouting "get down, get down!" Mr Whitby said: "One of the police officers was holding a black automatic pistol in his left hand. They held it down to him and unloaded five shots into him. I saw it. He's dead, five shots, he's dead."

He reported the man did not seem to be carrying a weapon or wearing a rucksack.

Scotland Yard said: "We can confirm that just after 10am today armed officers shot a male at Stockwell Underground station." Passenger Briony Coetsee, 23, said: "We were on the Tube when we suddenly heard someone say 'get out, get out' and then we heard gunshots - someone was shooting.

"Somebody in plainclothes who I thought was a civilian cop had his gun out and started shooting and told us to get out."

Chris Wells, a 28-year-old company manager, said he was travelling on the Victoria Line towards Vauxhall when he left the train at Stockwell. He saw about 20 police officers, some of them armed, rushing into the station before a man jumped over the barriers with police giving chase.

He said: "There were at least 20 of them (officers) and they were carrying big black guns.

"The next thing I saw was this guy jump over the barriers and the police officers were chasing after him and everyone was just shouting 'get out, get out'."

Christopher Scaglione, 35, a fashion designer, was also on a Victoria Line Tube train shortly before the incident.

He said: "The train didn't stop at Vauxhall and so I got out at Stockwell.

"I was just on my way out when I heard at first a little bang, not like a bomb more like a gun, and then people were shouting."

He added: "People then started to run and I heard two or three more bangs like people shooting."He reported the man did not seem to be carrying a weapon or wearing a rucksack

OK but. We only know what he says he saw AFTER the police were already in pursuit. What if 10 seconds before that, the guy had had a bag that he threw?

Far to early to be jumping to any conclusions. Let cooler heads prevail.

Didn't you hear? You just gotta be dark skinned and have pockets on your clothes and the orders are shoot to kill.
I don't think that's fair. Tensions are high enough without any artificial inflation, you know?

If they'd held him down and pumped five bullets into him while he was holding a bag, then I'd say OK... they were trying to stop him detonating a bomb - but didn't have a bag. Somebody else said he had a padded jacket, so I guess the cops were just making sure. I'm not condemning what they did, I just said

I'm just about to leave the office and take a Eurostar to London tonight, complete with eight week old baby... to say that I'm not looking forward to the trip is an undersatement.

My brother is fetching us from Waterloo and driving us to NW10 through awful traffic, not taking any chances on the Underground... it'll be pure hell.

And then they committ more terror which really is OUR fault for shooting them for blowing things up for shooting them for blowing things up for shooting them for blowing things up.

They only way out of this cycle, I feel, is to shoot enough of them that there are no more left to blow things up! :D
It worked with drugs, we imprisoned and shot so many drug dealers that now there are no more drugs! It worked once........

I get you. But seriously, if you are on the Underground today and you run from police... you know? You might just be too damn foolish to be allowed to live. Regardless of what colour your skin is.

Best wishes for a safe and entirely uneventful journey.

Mr.peachy is somewhere over the Atlantic right now, headed for NY on a 10 day business trip. I think this is the first time that I have had to reassure HIM that I am going to be OK, than the other way around. He made me promise to get my boss to agree to let me work from home at least two days next week, he said just so he can have at least two days where his first thought upon waking isn't "Did my wife get to work alive today?" :(

Hey, it's sisko.

Just what I was thinking. Sometimes I find it hard to believe that someone can be as stupid as he is. Sometimes i wonder if its just a joke, but then its been going on for over a year now so it cant be.

He will deny tht this is him of course, and I suppose it could be someone impersonating a Sisko clone, but it probably is him. I mean only one person says "You are full of it" and only one person puts their text before the quote. He is such an ass.

Fat too.

One witness on the BBC website reported that the man had on what appeared to be a bomb-belt.

Rumours are that the guys who shot him were special forces of some kind, because ordinary officers are not trained to shoot to kill.

'Man shot dead was not a bomber'

LONDON: A man shot dead by police at a London Underground station on Friday was not one of the four bombers who tried to attack the city's transport system on Thursday, Sky Television reported citing security sources.

"This is what I am picking up from security sources that the man who was shot this (Friday) morning at Stockwell tube wasn't one of those four bombers that police are hunting," Sky reporter Martin Brunt said.

But, he did apparently come out of a building that was under surveillance in connection with one of the suspects, and fail to stop when challenged by police in the station...

Precisely, he was known to be interracting with people that are obviously deemed a threat, and therefore under surveillance. He was wearing a large coat which made it easier to conceal all manner of things, he refused to co-operate with police and attempted to get onto a train in spite of warnings that he would be shot if he continued.

I've already heard so many contradicting reports on this one it's impossible to tell what actually happened. Some are saying the police pinned him down and drilled 5 bullets into his head, others say the victim tripped when getting onto the train and the police fired from a distance away, some say he was clutching a rucksack, other say he had a bomb belt, others say he was Lord Lucan.

he had to be killed, that's the orders they were given once he had entered the station and approached the train. the bullets used by the london police won't usually kill (depending on obvious things like where they're hit ect), so in order to kill 5 bullets from close range will make saure of that.

i'm glad they're not fucking around.

Americans are used to suspects being shot and killed. It happens all the time and the only outcry is if the suspect was white, female, or a child.

Brits (and most Europeans) are used to their politicians lying and have affairs.

I'm good with about a 3-5% margin of error on the whole thing. As long as 95% of the suspect killed are real terrorists, That seems reasonable like an acceptable loss ratio.

It seems to me that the Brits have a lot of experience chasing terrorists. They've had some huge miscarriages of justice. I hope they learned from their mistakes. My understanding though is that the British government gets to keep a lot more secrets than the US government, which must make it more difficult to get answers.

On a sidenote, I think that in the US we tend to remember the horrible cases, and forget that the vast majority of police shootings are justified.

56 people died in London. Killing 54 innocent darkskinned ones and 1 terrorist is still fair enough... Oh, wait! Sick muslim terrorists bomb their own people 3 times a day in Iraq. Buahahaaaa

The only way is to fuckin' be careful. It's obvious that suspected behaviour just one day after the second bombing attempt is risky. Geez, I try not to run in shopping mals even if I'm in a hurry--- not to unnecessarily atract the staff.

They aren't of Pakistani origin. They were born in Britain, except for the guy who was born in Jamaica of course, and who converted to Islam. Not to mention the fact that 2 of the 4 suspected bombers that the Police are still hunting for are obviously of African descent.

Bush and Blair sent us to a war in Iraq. A war in which many Muslims believe infringes on their holy land. Just because they aren't of Iraqi descent doesn't mean their motives for blowing up trains and buses has nothing to do with the war in Iraq.

Ridiculous. So you are a Brazilian national in ENGLAND. You come out of a building that police are watching and suddenly 4 plain clothed guys -one with a gun- start to chase you. They shout no warning, you don't stop running. You try to escape on the train. You trip and fall, and they are on you and you think "What could these men possibly want", and then lights out, maybe he heard a slight bang or smelled some powder.

Yeah some war on terror. If this were you , you would have no chance to change your mind how you think of the war on terror.

Your callousness is apalling and it is this very attitude that makes us hated around the world. I know you don't care, and that's fine that's your perogative, but don't make light of INNOCENT people being gunned down in your fanciful little "war on terror".
