View Full Version : Your Top 5 favorite places of all time to travel
This is a list of places you have been - NOT where you want to go and list WHY:
1. NYC - no need for an explanation
2. Rome - LOVE this city - the history, the architecture, etc.
3. Palm Desert, CA - the only place that the second I get out of the car, I am on vacation... 100% relaxed here... probably since I grew up going here since my family had a second home
4. Lake Shasta, CA for houseboating - the ultimate vacation because you get to sunbathe, boat, watersports without having to go anywhere... eat, drink, sunbathe, read, listen to music, eat, drink -only bathing suits are required and you don't have to put any make up on or do your hair...
5. Austria - love the food, the people, the scenery, the architecture

Germany- Germany is my 2nd home, it's a constant party.
New Orleans- Rocks! "SHOW YOUR TITS!"
Paris- I have only been there once but, I was amazed the entire time I was there... until I tried to catch a taxi, then I was pissed.
Northern California- It's where my friends and family are AND it's got the best food in the ENTIRE WORLD!

Can I answer this question in a couple of months, after I've been to Japan? Cuz I have a feeling it's going to end up on the list.

I haven't really been out of my timezone ever. So my list is very limited.
1. Lake Placid, NY (On top of a building, you can see Vermont, Canada and NY all at once...beautiful scenery and fresh air.)
2. Oneonta, NY - Where my beloved aunt (RIP) lived. I have such great memories of going to the lake there, and the baseball hall of fame.
3. Ocracoke, NC - Part of the Outer Banks, the southern most island which is pretty secluded and you won't find many tourists there. Only accessable by ferry, and 12 miles of deserted beaches = skinny dipping.
4. New York City - was only there once, for one night, to see the Beastie Boys in 2001 and didn't really get to see the city. I really want to go back though, cuz I loved it.
5. Orlando, FL - good beaches + attractions.
I need to get out more. I pretty much only travel to Oneonta and Ocracoke on a regular basis. I plan to add Chicago to the list, and Italy, France, Germany, and Spain to the list...someday.

Too hard! I haven't been to Europe in a while and there are too many great US cities (I'm the queen of the long weekend). Australia would be in 4th or 5th place with a bullet (because next time I'm staying longer and seeing more countryside).
I enjoyed Washington DC far, far more than I expected. I can't believe it took me so long to get there. Cleanest subway and fabulous free museums. And I was more moved by the Vietnam Memorial than I expected (even though it was a lot smaller than I expected). Many of the other large public memorials were crap though.
I'd also like to plug the North Shore of Minnesota, near Grand Marais for instance. ;)

New York City – The first place I ever visited in the US, no words can describe how much I love this place.
Edinburgh, Scotland – I had the perfect 30th birthday weekend - Edinburgh Castle, hit the shops on Princes Street and then we rested weary feet with a wee dram (or ten!)
Sullivan’s Island/Charleston, South Carolina – The plantations, the beaches, the beautiful gardens, the swamps!
Menorca – Beautiful, lush, green island. A place I can truly unwind.
Las Vegas – The most bizarre (but most fun) place I have ever been!
Honourable mention – San Francisco

I'm not widely travelled, unlike my missus who travelled just about everywhere before we met as she actually worked in travel.
I've been to:
Germany (Bonn, Nurburg) not a great experience.
France (Nice, Monaco) Frickin' loved it. Desparate to go back.
Spain (Puerto Pollensa, Mallorca) Such a cool place. Lovely mediterranean vibe, not a gadgy touristy place. The cycling around there is just stupendous.
USA (New Haven, Connecticut) My first real, proper experience of being abroad (Germany, 12 years previously, doesn't count) so perhaps that's why I loved it so much. I am now one of those sad gits that will buy anything that has New England in the name . :)
I am a very lucky guy though in that I get the same kick I would in being abroad by discovering new places locally on my bike. All I need to do is head out and hit a road I've never been on before and I am happy as larry.
It's as good as being abroad.
Top places to go in Scotland: Largs, Dunoon, Helensburgh, Loch Lomond, Dumfries.
