There's some great music out there that desrved a better singer. In fact, the singer puts me off listening to these folks.
How can I like Lou Reed and Bob Dylan and not these folks? I dunno.
Wire
Neil Young
The Smiths
Talking Heads (affected me most after Naked; now they're pretty unlistenable)
Joy Division
...add your own.

I don't know...I had some people in mind, but hmmm there's something I have with bands, it's like I imagine how things would sound if something was different, and it just wouldn't be the same, it all amounts to the effect it has on me.
And the fact that the music would deserve better means it'll be a band I have tolike who needs a different voaclist...in short I can't contribute to this thread, sorry!
Sure there's plenty of peoplewith idea's out there though, and this is one of the few threads that has made me think recently (y)
Placebo?

Aww.... you don wanna play.
Oh, well.
And, yeah -- I did put Neil Young in the awkward position of needing to replace Neil Young.

Snow Patrol's music isn't great, but their singer certainly can't sing for shit.

I kinda liked Soundgarden's music, too, but the singing was too steroidal.

I don't like the lead singer of the Killers' voice.
I didn't like Kurt Cobains' voice either.
Or Axl Rose.
I'm sure there's more, I just cannot think of them.

I really hate Bob Dylan's and Neil Young's whining. Also Interpol is a bit difficult for me to melt.

funny thing about this thread is most of friends who hate the Beastie Boys give this exact reason for it, they all hate the sound of their voices.

I second on The Smiths. Sometimes great music, but Morrissey's voice...bleh.
Oh, you did NOT just say that!!!  (n)

wow.. abcdefz... first you list neil young and the smiths.. but then... fuckin soundgarden! in my opinion one of the greatest singers ever, and definitely the best of the 90s.. cornell is the man.
i'd say red hot chili peppers.. anthony's voice is kinda cool, nothing great though.. but his writing blows..

Yeah, I was thinking that myself. I never got into the music, but Cornell can sing. :)

you might be interested in his solo album, or temple of the dog (a masterpiece).. the music on both of those is quite different

btw, I think that MTV2 picked him as one of the best 20 voices. So you know it's true. ;)

his solo album is called "euphoria morning," and the TOTD is self titled (it was recorded with the members of pearl jam (before they formed), as a tribute to singer andy wood...
i'm not surprised about the mtv thing given how much play "grunge" (i hate that word) got in the 90s

Wow -- I'm glad I've been reminded that Queen should be on this list.
Similar thing with Chris Cornell, et al. Just because they have flexibility and can hit all kind of notes doesn't mean they're not oversinging like crazy.
To wit: Whitney Houston. Bleh.

Wow I was coming into this thread just to say that and I was afraid everyone would think I was a musical idiot for saying so. I'm so glad someone else agrees. I dislike his singing style, his accent, all of it.
Also The Von Bondies.
Wire
Neil Young
The Smiths
Talking Heads (affected me most after Naked; now they're pretty unlistenable)

the funny thing is, I think that all these bands are made unique because of their singer's voices. though (with the exception of Neil and Talking Heads) I will admit that the voice probably played a part in them remaining at a cult status.

ROBERT PLANT??His voice is one of the MANY reasons why Led Zeppelin was so great!

Actually they are pretty talented, and Bono CAN sing. I just don't care for his voice

I don't like the lead singer of the Counting Crows, his voice anyway. There are a lot of their songs I'd like better if he didn't sing on them, ha.
Um, I can't remember who else at the moment.

I have that record....Food Gas Lodging, but currently have no turntable.
I'm amazed that somebody else has that record. I remember the vocals as rough, but not as rough as say, Geddy Lee or something.
I'm amazed that anybody else besides me has that record. It sold 5 copies I think.

The Counting Crows are by far my least favorite band. Not just because of the singing, either.

So I must have one of the five then. It's called Gas food and lodging btw. I remember going to see that movie because of the same title. It's got Ione Sky and J. Mascis on it. I remember liking the movie alot, more than I remember of the band. I was heavily into that kind of guitar bands in the mid-late '80's (Dream Syndicate, Del Fuegos, Hoodoo Gurus, Lime Spiders, Screaming Tribesmen...)

Yeah...thats it, Gas Food Lodging....I should of looked, your right. I have some of those other records too.
But w/o a turntable I'm not sure if that guys voice was off or just right for the material. Is his singing foul? I just don't remember if I ever had any issues with the singer.....If I'm remembering correct, that album is pretty dark.
We should try and call out to the other 2 owners of that record and see if they had issues with the vocals.
