I know there have been similar threads, but explain what you do when you are at work (excluding your posting on the mb!)...

I am the regional marketing coordinator for a large real estate company, as well as the corporate administrator, so I have to coordinate the print and media advertising of various publications and 2 tv shows, help create personal marketing plans for our agents, teach marketing classes monthly, as well as attend managers meetings and generate reports, oversee the staff of several offices and coordinate all of our social events...

I am just curious what everyone else does... mickill's thread talking about his job description started me thinking...

Seeing that I don't have an education, my job is crap.
I work in a little shop at a trainstation, which means I have to sell coffee/candy/sandwiches/tobacco to people who have bad tempers because they couldnt be bothered to leave the house earlier and are about to miss their train. I also have to do some shelf stacking and cleaning up in between...
As I said, It's crap, but some regular customers are nice and they pay's alright. And my gay colleagues can be quite fun too.

disclaimer : i will only be doing this job for another 4 weeks!

I am a customer service rep for a large mobile phone operator. I sit at a desk all day with a headset on listening to inane, stupid people who shouldn't be allowed operate a cup on a string let alone a mobile phone.

that's it.

I'm a writer and an editor at a university, where I write & edit articles and sections of technical reports. I also write articles for Web pages and provide the content, production, and maintenance for various branches of our Web site.

I edit similar writing pieces for other writers in my division and I also edit many of our organization's marketing pieces.

Because I use a lot of different tools in my job, I do tech support for anyone in the organization who uses those tools and has problems with them.

Oh great...

I work in a deli. This means I make sure that all the meat that's on sale is stocked in our deli case and sliced up so we can just grab some and stick it in bags for customers. Having said that, I also have to get the meat for the customers and the cheese and stuff too. If they want something that isn't already sliced up, then I slice that crap up for 'em.

When I work the hotcase, I scope out what fried foods we're running low on and make them as needed. Again... I do the whole waiting on customers thing and also answer general questions about the store. A little bit of register work on the hotcase too... oh, and I get to serve ice-cream. I also make a minimum of 30 rotisserie chickens and package them for sale through the store.

I'm a closer too, so that means I get to do all the fun clean up stuff... like washing dishes, cleaning slicers, cleaning deep fryers, and cleaning combi-ovens. Wiping out the deli case, wrapping the salads (macaroni, potato, coleslaw, whatever), checking the dates on chubs of meats to see if they need to be thrown out, wiping down counters/table tops/coolers, closing cash registers, sweeping, mopping, packaging left over meat for sale at the end of the night, and checking expiration dates on pre-packaged sandwiches and stuff in our section of the store.

Yup.

Trophies and engraving is our business, mainly I do the more complex engraving jobs ($10,000 gold cup anyone?) and design work for custom made awards, trophies, medals etc., which I then also produce / oversee production of (depends on how complex it is) using lasers and cnc machines. I'm also the resident product photographer and web developer, and if there's a problem with one of the computers my phone rings. I've been here for nearly 8 years now, and there's really not much I don't do here, besides serving customers, because customers suck. Business is fairly small, about 10 staff (give or take, depends on time of year), but in the world of trophies and engraving that's pretty big :o It's still growing, and thanks to the website, new areas of the business, such as name badges, are now overtaking the traditional (this is why I get my office and other perks ;)). About a year ago we had to hire a new staff member just for the name badge orders alone, where as previously they were just done with the rest of the crap. I'm only semi-happy with my job. It's just interesting enough to keep me here, but boring enough that I question getting out of bed each morning. I think I want a change just for the sake of change, so I'm gonna stick it out for a while longer. I don't plan on being here the rest of my life, but I still don't know what it is I really want to do.

I work for a lab that does geochemical assaying, environmental chemistry testing, and tests water sources for various bacteriological pathogens

I come in and check in with three separate supervisors, all of which im responsible to because I basically do three jobs at once but get shat pay

sometimes Im playing with crazy acids and substances that cause respiratory problems as I test thousands of mining core samples for precious metals such as gold, silver, platinum and copper
sometimes Im playing with raw sewage
sometimes I do boring tests such as conductivity, turbidity and pH on water samples
sometimes I do semi cool tests such as running nitrates and mercury
sometimes I do really fun work in the micro lab where everything is clean and pretty and air conditioned so I love it
sometimes Im sent out to deal with irrate clients who didnt like their results because im just a wee young innocent girl and clients like hearing bad news from me rather than some of my strapping male supervisors
sometime I just sit around and play on the internet while i pretend to be running one of the various analysis machines (AA, ICP) which is kinda fun
sometimes I get paid to have 2 hour poker tournament lunches with my boss
sometimes I just waltz around for an hour chitchatting and doing dances for my coworkers

Im totally unqualified for my job, cept for the micro part, and it rules and I like my coworkers (even the sexually harassing ones) and uhhhh yeah

Well, I don't do much at my day job because we're a fairly small office. But when I do have work to do it's usually answering phones, scheduling appointments, making reminder calls, shredding old documents, filing, escorting patients to the back, cleaning and sterilizing the backroom (yeah, I get to deal with throwing away bloody teeth), cleaning and bagging the instruments, developing bite-wing x-rays, faxing, mailing, yadda yadda. I'm your basic dental secretary and sort-of dental assistant.

My night job consists of me sitting on my ass scoring hockey games for $20 a pop. I start the clock when the puck drops, and click it off when a whistle is blown. I keep track of all penalties and their times, the score, the clock, and I get ice and medical attention when one of the players gets his legs kicked out from under him and his femur comes shooting out of his thigh with a loud, resounding CRACK.

Fun, huh?

That actually sounds kinda cool if you ask me. Can I have an application?

Anyway I'm a database administrator. I configure, update, and maintain two sets of server clusters, and a couple hundred clients. Plus I am tech support to all the users who access the 5 virtual servers linked to the database. During deployments I do the same thing, except with a mobile deployable kit that we bring with us, and I work out of a tent instead of an office oh yeah and I get a gun too.

i'm THE graphics supervisor at my flexible package/print company.

i'm officially the head of the graphics dept, but at my facility...i am the only person in the dept. (great for job security).

Every bit of print that comes through here goes through me. it usually comes from the designers, i check it over to make sure it's print worthy and adjust accordingly or have them do it. i maintain and archive all of the digital and physical art.

i coordinate all of the art production, from initial art inception from customers to getting it out to the press. this includes coordinating customers, vendors, shipping, facility personel, and press time. so, lots of phone calls and emails...and meeting after meeting. i review and approve every order, write up the pricing, and keep the customers and vendors happy.

we print Pringles, all General Mils bowl paks, all Kelloggs bowl paks, lipton soup packages, Lipton tea packages, pharmecuticals, gillette,...on and on. we also print the canadian versions for all of these lines.
you most likely have some packaging in your home that went through me first.

every pringles lid, for example, you tear off went through me first....and i had a hand in designing it...
jaw dropping, i know.
i'm such a god. *flex*

i'm also on the ISO audit team for the facility....which is boring beyond belief. it mostly consists of me falling asleep during the conferance meetings.

How much would it cost me to get a custom made championship belt??

tracky
07-26-2005, 08:03 AM
Well, we don't actually make those belts, for that kind of thing, you'd purchase the whole belt and then customise it. They're usually not custom made, ie they're pressed or cast something like that. A custom made one would, depending on what sort of detail you want, run into the hundreds, possibly even thousands, but the time it's machined and then silver-smithed into shape.

Spare me the science lesson and name your price!!

tracky
07-26-2005, 08:13 AM
That would require customer service ;)

Nah, really I don't price anything, and we don't keep those belts in stock. What I would suggest would be easier would be to find a place that actually sells the belts, and there's a damn good chance that they can customise it for you too, which will probably work out cheaper than us making it. If you've got the cash to splash around tho, PM me and we'll talk
