So what I have been working on today, whilst I've been bouncing back and forth in here, is a unit for my students on the forensic investigation process in the London bombings. Specifically, focussing on stuff like how the investigators determine what explosives were used, how much, what the force of the blasts were, etc etc.

Now I've got to go get on a bus and go home. And try not to think about it. But be alert. But not afraid. But relax. And be vigilant.

Be EXTRA vigilant. always with the emphasis on being extra vigilant. (That's what George Bush constantly reminds us of. -gee thanks)

What if you looked at it like this:
8 million people ride the tube daily.
less than 40 were killed in a rare disaster.

40 : 8 000 000
= 1 in 200 thousand on the day of a disaster (which really dont happen every day) may get killed

*just trying to ease your mind a bit..........oh and don't forget to be peachy!

Could be worse. You could be riding the bus home after 8 hours of asking people if they'd like fries with that.

LOL cheers thanks for that

Only took me 2 hours to get home! Feel much better now that I've stopped off at the pub and had a pint and some dinner.

It's just getting very wearying, this whole thing that every day just commuting to and from work is some huge exercise in trust and courage. Like, I just wanna go to work, you know? But instead we've all got to eye eachother up and smile nervously. Fuckin ay. I can take it all with a certain sang froid, but it's just all a bit crappy.

I suppose in a way I'm feeling worse for it because mr.peachy is away on business and so there's no one to snuggle up to reassuringly at the end of the day, plus I've been way PMS so all of my little neuroticisms are magnified in my own head. I love this city, man. I hate feeling this way.

I've actually only seen Big Brother like twice or something. I know there's a buff girl called Orlaith and a weirdo called Derek and a bummer called Kemal, but that's about it. Oh yeah isn't there another bummer called Anthony or something?

PS
GLC have a new song out. "Your Missus Is A Nutter". Not as good as their old skool shit though.

crap isn't it:(
sorry too about your forensic investigation exercise. reading the paper while travelling on the tube was bad enough for me!

today i went into town with cosmo and felt uncomfortable the whole time. At the moment I don't have to take the tube, so i felt doubly weird -- the fact that i made the choice to go in. coming home was horrible as i was on the victoria line and the train stopped at stockwell for about five minutes. i felt very spooked by that.

i know the odds etc. but i don't really want to take my son on the tube and either him have to see me ripped to shreds, or the other way round :(

yeah I hear you. I see people getting on the bus and stuff with their kids, pushing prams and whatnot and I just think, I don't know if I could do it. I mean I know we've got to live life and all, and I'm certainly not just going to stay at home. But it does occur to me.

For example: on Saturday, I am going to be taking care of a friend's 18 month old for the day. And I thought well, what can I do all day with an 18 month old? So I thought oh I know, we'll go to the zoo. But then there was this thought of, what if I got on the bus with my friend's child after a nice day at the zoo, and something happened? And it's just so shit to think that. It never would have occurred to me before to wonder if it would be OK with my friend to for me to take her kid on the bus, you know?

Sounds like an interesting exercise for the students. I saw some program last night about the amazing effectiveness of the planes crashing into the towers 9/11. How it happened exactly as drawn up. :(

Oh, something your students might find interesting is the chances of winning lotto. They just introduced something called MegaMillions with a 1:175 million chance of winning. You're more likely to be struck by lightening 12 times. :o

Yeah, I think I may have seen that program, or certainly one similar. As an architect, mr.peachy was very interested in exactly how that happened. That whole thing of how each floor 'pancaked' down to the next, the next, etc. Terrible as that is to think of in itself, the fact that neither tower 'toppled' probably saved a hell of a lot more people, and certainly minimised physical damage in the surrounding area.

I am keen to use this current situation as an opportunity for teaching with my kids as much as possible, as are the other mentors in the program, so I really don't mind doing the research, per se. They are seeing the news and hearing these words "forensic evidence" every day, and I feel they deserve to understand what is going on as fully as possible. But it was just a bit wierd yesterday, after the police had just released the photos of recovered nail bombs and the crime scene photos of the damage on the tube trains, and spending the day reading and writing about how they determine the chemicals used and the calculate the force of the blast etc etc, to then at the end of the day just go "Right, home time! Lah di dah."

Intellectually of course I know I am as safe on the bus/tube as I ever was really, but you know how it is.

So, just to give myself a little break, I'm working form home today. well, actually, at the moment I'm working from Starbucks.

Yeah the guy who is the math tutor does a unit on probablility stuff like that! But as the old saying goes, "Hey, you never know."
