The Religious Left Fight Back

The last time U.S. progressives won, people of faith were at the center of the movement -- not stuck in its closet. Rabbi Michael Lerner is stirring up trouble again -- thank God.

Earlier this week, Lerner was the main organizer of a national gathering in Berkeley, California, for the religious Left. His "Spiritual Activism" conference was intended to help launch a much-needed new initiative: the Network of Spiritual Progressives (NSP).

I absolutely agree; it's ridiculous that so many people are automatically assumed to be Republican just because they're Christian. It'll usually work out that most Republicans are Christians, but not all Christians are Republicans. My mom grew up Irish-Catholic, and converted to Mormonism at the urging of one of her best friends a few years ago (though I still think she's more Catholic than anything). She's one of the hugest liberals I know. Gives money to the DNC, MoveOn, volunteered for Kerry's campaign and now O'Malley's election for governor of MD.

It's one thing to say you're Christian, and to vote solely because you are anti-abortion, and another to have an open mind and actually vote on more than just one aspect. She personally is opposed to the war, wants to help out the poor and those in need, cares about the environment god made for us, etc. Which is exactly why she votes Democrat.

My mom's parents do that. The only way that they would vote for a Democrat or pro-choice candidate is if the Republican/pro-life one is a woman. Yes, that's right. They have actually done this before. They voted for a pro-choice Democrat male because the pro-life Republican was female. (n)

I absolutely agree; it's ridiculous that so many people are automatically assumed to be Republican just because they're Christian. It's only assumed because the right wing Christens are loud mouths, one person on this board comes to mind. There very well may be more liberal Christens, they just keep their opinions to themselves.
I've always considered religion to be a personal thing, if a person feels need to broadcast and push it on others it must be due to a lack of faith.
If your religion makes you a better person I'm all for it, just keep it to yourself.
I want to know about your religion about as much as I want to know how hard your dump was this morning.
