David Banner To Confront Backward-Thinking Mississippi Family
Rapper inks deal for Cartoon Network show.
The Dirty South rapper has inked a deal to star in his own animated show for the Cartoon Network. While he's still keeping mum on some of the details (like the show's title), Banner did leak a little bit of info about the project-in-the-works backstage at the 2005 BET Awards (see "Destiny's Child Give Lap Dances, Fugees End Feud At BET Awards").
"I can't tell y'all the name of [the cartoon] yet, but it's going to be about an older white family in Mississippi whose mind frame is still caught in the 1800s," Banner said. "Then along comes me, and then, wow!"
Well, he's no Mr. Rogers — and with the upcoming project slated to air during the channel's Adult Swim block (11 p.m.-6 a.m., Saturday-Thursday), you can expect the rapper to bring some, ahem, entertaining content for late-night tube-watchers.
"It's fun because we'll be able to do a couple of extra things," he hinted.
Banner is also counting the days until his new LP, Certified, drops in stores August 23. The disc was originally supposed to hit shelves on July 19, but the rapper insists his final product will be worth the wait.
"It's going to be the greatest album ever. You better get ready," he said of his follow-up to 2003's MTA2: Baptized in Dirty Water. Expect guest spots from hip-hop heavyweights Twista, Jadakiss, Dead Prez, Talib Kweli, UGK, Too Short and Three 6 Mafia (see "Blessed By Lil Scrappy, Produced By Lil Jon, David Banner Gets Certified").
The album's latest single, "Play," was produced by DJ Smurf (a.k.a. Mr. Collipark), the same beatmaker behind the Ying Yang Twins' latest hit, "Wait (The Whisper Song)," from their new album, U.S.A. (United State of Atlanta).
" 'The Whisper Song' wasn't just a song or a fad," Banner explained. "It's actually a new movement that we call 'intimate club music' that [DJ] Smurf came up with and mine is like the second installment of it. So ladies, get your towels ready — it's about to go down!"
Banner just finished filming the video for the track, directed by Little X (Usher, R. Kelly). In the clip, the MC plans to address some weighty issues — literally.
"All I gotta say is the ladies are working out and working up a sweat. Actually, what we're gonna do is take the song and focus on health and the fact that people, we don't work out like we should in the neighborhoods," he said. "[There's] high blood pressure, different things like that. We need to take care of those things, so I'm using rap like a door to open [up discussion] and talk about some things we need to face in our communities."
