ZURICH, Switzerland -- The United States improved to No. 6 in FIFA's rankings Wednesday, the Americans' best showing in the monthly ratings by soccer's governing body.
The Americans, who will play in this week's CONCACAF Gold Cup semifinals, had never been ranked higher than seventh. They were 10th last month, but passed France, England, Portugal and Spain to move within one spot and three points of rival Mexico.
World Cup champion Brazil remained No. 1, and Argentina improved one spot to second. The Netherlands was third, and the Czech Republic dropped from second to fourth.
France fell two spots to seventh, and England, Spain and Portugal rounded out the top 10.
Germany moved from 21st to 11th, the biggest improvement of any nation in the top 20.

Because USA is now ranked higher than England so I think we should get the naming rights for the sport.
If they wanna change it back to "football" or "Futbol" or however they spell it, they're gonna have to play us for it!

I hate the American 'soccer' team. They spend millions and millions of dollars training the shit out of the players, and they still can't get close to winning anything. Let's take a look at their record, courtesy of Wikipedia.
World Cup record
1930 - Semifinals
1934 - Round 1
1938 - Withdrew
1950 - Round 1
1954 to 1986 - Did not qualify
1990 - Round 1
1994 - Round 2
1998 - Round 1
2002 - Quarterfinals
Interesting. For 32 years they didn't even qualify. I'm Canadian, which according to you means I'm practically American (and I resent that comment), and I don't even want to call it soccer.

Explain what relevance this has to using the American term for football.
Also, I bet my bottom dollar you are American. There are actually good reasons why Canada isn't in the top 20 in football. For one, we have a population one tenth of the United States. Yet, in all time international play, our record is 13 wins, 13 losses, and 8 draws. Interesting.....
Also, we pour millions less into developing a football team. We still have great players and we manage to be 84th in the world, which is nothing to be ashamed about, considering football is so tragically unpopular here in Canada.
Anyways you are an idiot who had to retaliate to the States gross underachievements in international football tournaments, and chose to select a smaller country with less funding and less population.

I'm sure England spends as much, if not more than we do on their National Soccer Team. USA was not even interested in being competitive in Soccer until a few years ago when we hosted the World Cup. Since then, Soccer has been gaining national interest. I'm sure our history is poor in the sport, we were never interested in it before. It seems to be the most popular sport in every other country including England.
Hey, not for nothing, but if England's Baseball team or "Gridiron" team was ranked higher than the USA I'd be expecting some friendly jabs towards us as well.

It is being worked on as we speak actually. A true World Series, pitting country vs. country.
One of the hurdles was the doping policy, or lack of, I should say by Major League Baseball. The Government has stepped in and has forced MLB to instute a much stricter policy which is going to pave the way for an International Series of Baseball to be played, Pre-MLB season.
USA will in no way be a heavy favorite. Nations like Puerto Rico, Dominican Republic, Venezula and Japan produce some very good players and will be able to give the USA a good game.

Japan will probably not participate due to the timing of it. And Cuba is non-commital -- likely due to their players seeking asylum. The US will probably lose.
