my mother went on the pill for acne when she was younger and it aggrevated a genetic disease, i'm not sure what it's called, but it caused excess pigmentation, and she had big dark blotches all over her face (like a dalmation). he had to have her skin peeled, and her skin looks quite bad now. :(

I know I won't be of much help. It doesn't really matter what I use, as long as I use it on a regular basis. I just wash my face with special acne soap. Lately I've just been using regular body wash as I've run out of my normal face wash and haven't had a chance to get more. I think it's Neutrogena. It doesn't cost much here. Maybe $1.50. If you would prefer an herbal treatment, that's probably cosmo's territory. I used an excellent one once which worked better than anything else, but it was a few years ago. I don't remember what was in it or even what the name was. I've been looking for it for awhile, so if I can find it again I'll let you know what it is.

Ohh, my roommate's on the pill because her cramps are debilitating. Even the prescription pain relievers didn't work. Only the pill. My mom had to go on it because she has lupus and getting pregnant now would kill her and her doctor made her go off of it when she started having heart problems. They weren't caused by the pill but it would exacerbate things if she stayed on it. So now she's kinda damned if she does, damned if she doesn't. :/

The only thing I used to mostly get rid of it was this prescription stuff called differin, its a gel you put on at night before you go to sleep, kinda makes your face stiff but it worked with no sideeffects other than the face stiffness at night. Also I was given a prescription for antibiotics but I'm one of those people that believe in only taking antibiotics where absolutely necessary...its kind of a last resort.

Zinc tablets work. I use them. Though, my skin is pretty bad at the moment.
It's because of alcohol. The more I drink, the worse my skin gets. It doesn't make life better when I've been drinking virtually non-stop since Thursday.
I'm detoxing myself this month, so we will see if it's my diet and lifestyle.

if you have a persistant acne problem....and it's more than just a few minor spots occasionally.....you need medical science, dear.
fuck the herbs and home remedies.
i had persistant, moderate acne in my late teens and into my very early 20's.
i used everything over the counter....to no avail.
i was put on perscription topical solutions....nothing.
anitbiotics....worked well for a while...until i built up an immunity to them. then they stopped working.
the problem with these things were that they treated the symptoms, not the cause.
the cause being the skin producing too much sebum (oil) and clogging it's own pores.
good hygene helps....but it can't stop the biological condition.
the only thing that worked was Accutane.
i took that shit for 5 months (it's HARDCORE shit) and i was clear for life.
perfect skin.
Accutane actually effects your physiology and stops your glands from overproducing oil.
it's gets to the root of the problem.

Yes but it does a number on your liver.
it can...in under 2% of people taking it. don't believe the hype.
you need to be carefully monitored while taking it, that's all.

so you take it for 5 months and then that's it? One pill a day? I had a friend who was on it and her skin was like red, peely, ashy....but then like a month later it was smooth and zit free. Its only for severe cases right?

yep, 5 months...one pill a day. that's it.
it is usually reserved for either severe cases or very persistant cases (like mine)...just because it IS a pretty hardcore drug that needs to be monitored.
plenty of side effects are possible...some even likely....but they almost always fade away.

I have dry skin (problems of its own) so I don't use this old Max Factor (the make-up artist himself) tip from decades ago, for oily skin, but I have heard it recommended frequently.
Mix baking soda and water into a paste and leave it on your face until it dries. Do this about once a month. It alters the pH of your face just enough that it gets rid of the greasies for two or three days.
I do not recommend however, to use any other products for a few days that will remove oils, as it is your body's natural reflex to combat dry skin by creating more oils.
The positive side to oily skin is that you will be less likely to get wrinkles.
I just use a Salicylic (sp?) acid cream every couple of days, it's basically what is in aspirine.

ahh i want to go off the pill :\
lately my skin's been breaking out like crazy. i switched skin care lines (you have to every few months or so) and it's just not doing it for my anymore. i think i need to go back.
the basics are:
cleanser - rinse w/ warm water and cleanse pores
toner - sanitizes and shrinks pores
moisturizer - replaces moisture lost through washing
and exfoliate (GENTLY!) once or twice a week.
and mr_complex was spot on about the zinc. 3 times a day.
drink lots of water, avoid caffiene and smoking and all other toxins.
i have oily skin, so i use clay masks every two weeks or so, but you can use them more often. a good one is pure bentonite clay mixed with raw organic apple cider vinegar. leave it on for about 20 minutes, your skin will be glowing. it's kind of gross when you wash it off, though - all green and pasty.
if you have REALLY huge, BAD zits, look for a good zinc cream. i use one by this brand Margarite, but i'm not sure if you'd be able to find it down thurr.
as far as internally, vitamin E is always good for the skin, and taking oils such as flaxseed can be helpful as well.
a basic rule for flaxseed oil is:
one tablespoon per 100 pounds of body weight, daily.
if you weighed 150, 1 and 1/2 tablespoons, 200, 2 tablespoons, etc.
always take it in liquid form. even though it tastes pretty blech, you'd have to take 14 softgels to equal one tablespoon.

yeah, I tried using the latter for a few months because my skin went nuts. With the shift back to San Diego after being in DC for a year... I think that's what did it because I've NEVER had acne problems, period.
Now it calmed down, a lot. And I didn't do anything for it. I gave up after that one dried my skin out and stopped caring. Now it's back to normal. Before, I never did anything for the skin mainly cause I never had to. The thing that I think may be key is the fact that I tend to moisturize a lot more than most people. I use the Oil of Olay 15-SPF Face lotion, everyday.

Yepp. I went on accutane the first time when I was about 12 and it was wonderful. 5 years later though, I went back on it. I was on it for 6 months each time and my skin is perfect now. My dermatologist told me I may need to get on it again in my mid to early 20's, but it's really amazing.
The only thing, it's very expensive!
I can tell you one thing though, avoid mineral oil (aka baby oil) at ALL costs! That shit is absolutely horrible for your skin and it is in so many over-the-counter face washes/moisturizers/toners/etc. Most people believe it must be wonderful because it is in so many products, but it's not at all. Mineral oil cannot be absorbed by your skin, the molecules are too big to be absorbed transdermally. So basically, it creates a film on your skin that will not allow any moisture in or out, so you wind up with acne. Read the labels on the anything you may have now, it's probably in there. It's amazing...some products actually advertise that there's mineral oil in them.

Here it grows naturally everywhere, but if you can't pick it yourself (all the parts above ground, not just flowers) you should be able to get it from herbal stores.
