My little brother joined the army...really because he didn't have a choice. He got busted his senior year in high school dealing dope. Since he was 18 early in the school year, it was either doing jail time because it's a felony in Tennessee to deal dope on school grounds, or he could join the army and they drop the charges. Well, my parents couldn't dare have a son do jail time (how embarrassing) , they made a deal with the military. Well, he was shipped to Iraq right before we declared war and it has fucked him up psychologically probably for life. He was 19 camped outside Iraq and remembers seeing the bombs fly over his head...where the U.S. offically declared war. He said that he was listening to Rage Against the Machine on his discman while other troops were crying and praying. He said that it was surreal. He was so scared he couldn't even cry. He was 19, came from an upper class suberban family, and suddenly had to deal with wondering if he was going to live the next day or not.
He came home last December, after being there a year, and ever since then hasn't been the same. He had to run over an Iraqy boy with his tank that was covered in blood after his troops bombed the boy's village and apparently killed the kid's parents. The kid was scared and ran for help. David had no choice. It fucked David up bad. I remember when David came home for X-mas, we went out and he downed 10 xanax and drunk a 1/5 of Jack Daniels. He almost died. It was a nightmare for our family.
Therefore, I greatly respect and admire anyone in the military. I totally support our troops. They're doing some shit I could never be brave enough to do...even if they are not going to Iraq. I could never imagine moving to a different foreign country every year and having to start over. That's awsome (sincerely) and Good Luck! ;)

I have a VERY similar experience with a friend I grew up with. Our families knew eachother and we've been like brothers since we were kids. His family moved away to Miami and he had he same thing happen to him with drugs and being given the 'option' of going to the army.
He's done now and the person I remember is destroyed. I don't necessarily respect everyone in the army, but I feel for those that don't want to be there, aren't mentally built for it and come back zombies. Sucks.

Just out of curiosity...why don't you respect everyone in the army (or military in general)? I mean, it's a great opportunity for some people...they pay for your schooling, they train you in a skill, it's a job, etc...A lot of people aren't blessed to be born into a family that can support them until they are able to "survive" on their own.
And as far as being able to "mentally" handle war...is anyone really? A lot of people deal with it by shutting reality out. So, just because they act "cold" and not showing emotion does that mean they are "mentally" dealing with it? You think you could "mentally" handle that?

Well that is great for you since the military probably wouldn't have taken you anyway (there is a fitness program in place). But since you are so smart you should also realize that a huge number of military members, do their 3-4 years and get out and go to college without even leaving the state they were raised in. You gotta at least kinda know what you are talking about before you start talking smack.

ANYONE in the US can go to college. You don't NEED to go into the military to afford an education.
Between Grants, Scholorships, Student Loans, and a part-time job delivering Pizza or something anyone can afford it.

People who join the military also do so because while they are working, they are receiving college credit as well as job experience, a lot of times folks will get a job in the dental field (right out of highschool) do their stint for four years, and have an associates degree from the Air Force which tranfers over to major universities. So they finish up their schooling with a step up and end up being dentists... you really don't know what you are talking about.

whoa there nelly. I think that's really a very unkind and elitist attitude. I don't see why you feel the need to belittle any kid who makes a decision to try and lift him or herself out of the poverty cycle. It might not be the way you would choose to do it, and maybe you had some fairly switched on parents or a guidance counselor or whoever it was in your life that hipped you to the possibilities available to you with grants and scholarships. But if you come from nothing, have parents that have never dealt with the academic beaureaucracy themselves, and maybe don't have the greatest school support team behind you, how would even know where to begin?
It's not what I would do, and I don't imagine it's what I will want for my child someday. But I also know that, being financially solvent, savvy and educated myself, it's not likely going to seem an appealing option for them anyway. But for a kid who has it within themselves to try and achieve more than what the system has expected of them - I wouldn't dream of insulting them.

You wouldn't have to worry about that anyway... the one thing you are right about though is that a lot of grunts in the Army do join because they don't really have that many options when it comes to education. The Army has the lowest standards when it comes to taking recruits.

The purpose of the degree is to use toward your bachelor's and actually a lot of people get their Bachelor's before they leave the military. It gives someone a real step up to use when they hit the university instead of having to be 22-38 years old and starting as a freshman.
