Alot of you talk on here about some of you not liking the beats of the new record. Either it being choppy, computer beats, whatever you may say.

However, Im interesting in knowing what you think of To The 5 Boroughs, lyrically??? In my opinion, I think its the best lyrically written album since Pauls Boutique, no lie.

One of Adrock's rhymes in 'thats it, thats all'

'Well I'm a freaky streaker like Winnie the Pooh
T-shirt and no pants and I dance the bugaloo'

I believe that is at the top of the line in all his rhymes ever written. It's inserted so perfectly (y) I have been unable to get it out of my head, i've been sayin it to everyone.

Also being at one of the newer concerts, it sounds like they are having a great time rapping the newer songs.

Guaranteed fresh everytime?, still applies (y)

Almost every line on TT5B is good, there's none which to me don't sound 'perfectly inserted' as you say. It's a good album, stripped down perhaps, but very good. And lyrically it's untouchabke when compared to other hip hop lyricists out there, they're rapping about whatever they want whilst keeping it focused in specific tracks (i.e. the diss tone to Hey Fuck You).

The referencing aswell is sweet...and I love the goofy lyrics/serious lyrics effect the whole album has. I mean RRNN lyrcially is fucking gold. 'I went to get a loan and they asked my race, i wrote down human inside the space, it's a disgrace how they try to debase, it ain't the banks damn buisness how my lineage trace...' following lines like that with a reference to the very classy reunite on ice...shit's hot

I don't care what anybody says, TT5B is gold. Old school beats with a new school attitude plus untouchable lyrics. Now that's nice.

The delivery of the "I sneak a, chicken tika, marsallah, at a gallah, event" line is absolute proof of how their phrasing has matured through the years. There's tons of wordplay that a lot fans don't even realize when they listen. They just make it sound so simple and easy; I think that's why people don't recognize the quality of their new shit.

Marsala (have you a clue what he's referring to?) at a GALA event (been to one?). Phrasing means something completely different to what you're referring to... it has to do with the way lyrics are expressed. have you even tired writing lyrics? if you have you'd understand how simplistic this crap is. People don't recognize quality in it because they know better than you....

What the fuck do you know? You base that on a few opinions given on a record which a lot of people love. People are simply saying why they like it, specifically in terms of the lyrics, which is what the thread's about. I don't need some tosser telling me I need to listen to alot more music when they know fuck all.

Oh, and reunite...the way it's spelt in the lyrics so bite me you twat.

Exactly. Now more than an ever I find it's something you either get or you don't, lyrically or otherwise.

I'd say it's the best and easiest album to rap along with since license to ill. The rhymes and words are pretty clear, even the fast ones. It's funny because when i sing along with it, I think I'm hearing a lyric wrong but then I look it up and I'm actually hearing it correctly. I've been listening to that album in my cd player for like 2 weeks straight now.

As for the computer generated sounds, well I feel some of those are really cool. Like in the song Oh Word, that robot voice that says each Beastie's name before their verse...Just awesome. Also, all the computer generated beats have not really been done a lot by the Boys in the past, so for everyone that says this album is a copy of their past albums, they can cram it with walnuts.

Another thing I like about TT5B is the number of samples they use. I could be wrong, but it sounds like they use more samples on this album than any other ones. And some of them are pretty hilarious. For example, "And I was trying on the Batgirl costume. What's wrong with that? Now, I was the Catwoman." Hilarious.

I never said what they were doing is groundbreaking, asshole, I simply said their delivery is more complex than it was before. Second of all, if you've ever heard of "less is more", then it explains why the simplicity works. By the way, if it's so fuckin' simple, where's your hit record? Last of all, if phrasing means "how words are expressed", I think the delivery of the line I mentioned is a solid example of phrasing. If you'd open your bionic eye, you might actually understand what I was talking about, fruitcake.

To the 5 boroughs in my opinion is just like any other beastie album in regards to fans. All 'us' hardcore fans of the beasties will still love the beasties even if we did or did not like the new album, however to the 5 boroughs, (just like all there records) have won over new fans. Especially the new young ones.

All you have to have is your eyes open and your ears clean, and everyone will see or hear something special on every album.

I'd like to add to that rtaher precise comment, with the fact that it's likely to discover another 'something special' upon each listen of any Beasties record.

I have to disagree a little. While a lot of the rhymes are simple, tight and well-delivered (old school b-boy at its best), a lot of them are awkward and pretentious, especially on "Time to Build" or "All Lifestyles". I think their best rhymes are on "The Brouhaha", especially:

There's a commotion that's going down
I talk more shit than drown the clown
I'm like that freak from cirque de soleil
With a leg behind my head and a rhyme to say

Ten nine eight seven six five four
Get up on the mic and I'm'a even the score
One two three, three to two one
Don't carry a knife and I don't carry a gun

I wouldn't say they're the best they've ever written: I like the denser and more overlapping wordplay of Paul's Boutique better.

Paul's Boutique encapsulated a collage of life in 1989 via lyrics.
TT5B is lyrical lite beer in comparison.

Paul's Boutique is a wine cooler. The songs on that album lack substance thematically. There's nothing beyond the goofy rhymes and bazillion samples. No message. No meaning. I'm afraid I have to disagree. Paul's Boutique was like a collage of their obnoxious, drugged-out, hipster-savant youth culture ... rump-shaking, smoking and drinking on a tuesday night, girls, subways, bums, eggings. It's brilliant, and I think it has a lot more substance and energy than TT5B.
