One of:
Editors- 'The Back Room'
Sufjan Stevens- 'Illinoise'
Dive Dive- 'Tilting at Windmills'
Would've been At the Drive-In's greatest hits by default if they hadn't screwed the tracklist up and left off half their best stuff.

Some contenders:
Eels - Blinking Lights and Other Revelations: Definetely the best Eels album, and probably the most powerful album of the year.
Gorillaz - Demon Days : Surprisingly deep, dark pop from a band that was originally just a novelty. 'Last Living Souls' is one of my favourite songs of the year.
M.I.A - Arular: With her, The Streets and Dizzee Rascal around, most of the best hip-hop is coming out of Europe.
Sleater- Kinney - The Woods: Probably the best pure rock album this year. It deserves to get a bigger audience.
Sufjan Stevens - Illinois: While it didn't really blow me away after the hype I heard about it, it's still a very solid album that I'd recommend to anyone.
Buck 65 - Secret House Against the World: Look out for this one, it kinda snuck by the radars. It's not perfect, but there's a few songs on here that are must-hears.
But the album that will most likely be my favourite is System of a Down's 'Mezmerize'. The album's only 11 songs, and barely over 30 minutes long, but it packs more originality and utter insanity than anything else I've heard in a very long time. It's like a mix of heavy metal, punk and reggae with some politcal overtones guided to perfection with Rick Rubin's producing. I can't even imagine how good 'Hypnotize' will be.

Fuck yeah!
There's a lot of great releases this year, it's very tough to say what's at the tops.
Nobody's mentioned "In Your Honor" by the Foo Fighters. That one has the power to stop starvation and raise world literacy levels. I'm tellin' ya, this album is gold!

I already have it before it is released. I guess this is my personal choice, not based on suces or popularity.

Fuck your insolent new music; the only material from 2005 to consider is that which wasn't made by talentless pricks who can only dream of ascending to the levels of bygone greatness found in pre-89 bands.

Before spitting out such senseless statements, throw out any piece of new garbage that you have around and listen to some Scorpions or Yaz. Then your opinion might be worth a its weight in bytes.

New Order- Waiting for the Sirens' Call
Waiting for the sirens' call was really a moderate let down by them. I thought it was weak compared to Get Ready. It really lacks a great song, whereas I think Get Ready had 3 or 4.
Compared to a few other releases this year New Order's new album is a fair way behind. I still enjoy it, but Mars Volta and Queens of the Stone Age's releases were far superior, the rest I mentioned were in the same league...but still probably just a little more musically progressive.

Compared to the shit put out by new bands, however, Waiting For the Sirens' Call is the record of the year.
And IMHO, it's their catchiest album since "Technique."

Sleater Kinney and NIN for me. I'm starting to like the Beck one. It often takes a long long time for a CD to grow on me.
I haven't been able to listen to the Foo Fighters. 2-3 songs is all I can take at a sitting.
Was the Mars Volta one from 2005? I feel like I've had it longer.
