The other day I decided I was tired of listening exclusively to rap and decided to branch out. What I came back with from my trip to the music store was London Calling -- I'm sure the entire population of this board owns it now. Anyhoo, it is all very highly enjoyable -- Spanish Bombs and The Guns Of Brixton are a couple of standouts so far. (y)

London Calling can't fail. What a lucky person to just discover this record. Fresh listens must be fantastic.

I still remember when I started listening to it. But I had it on vinyl and so there were 2 records. I kept listening to the same record over and over and to this day, I don't know the stuff on the other record as well. And Train in Vain wasn't labelled, so I didn't realize what that was for a long time.

I did the same thing with The Wall. I only listened to the first record and never realized I owned one of the songs played on the radio all the time (Run Like Hell).

Welcome to the world of punk rock, tdot. Hope you enjoy it! (y)

It's probably the most consistent double album ever.

Good to see you finally branching out, man.

Everyone should own London Calling. It should be mandatory.

I love the album, but I do think it's got some filler on there. ("Lover's Rock" is pretty good but no big deal; "Four Horsemen" is kinda lame.)

"Rudy Can't Fail," "Hateful," "London Calling," "Train in Vain (Stand By Me)," "Lost in the Supermarket," "the Right Profile" and so on are great stuff, though.

We used to cover "Brand New Cadillac" (which, of course, is a cover... has anyone ever heard the original? Not me).

I heard the original on the Rhino '50s box set. I was like "Holy crap! The Clash did this song! Wait a sec... The Clash covered it!"

It was a revelation. :D

I thought I had that original, the Clash could of done any song on Loud, Fast & Out of Control and it would of sounded great.

No, not everyone would like it. They shouldn't own it just because it's one of the "must have" albums. If you don't like it, don't buy it.

I'm sure most everyone would like "London Calling" regardless. It's got a variety of genres and styles evident in the album. It doesn't take a rocket scientist to appreciate it.

Besides, tdot (who EXCLUSIVELY listens to hip-hop) loves it. If he can latch onto the album, ANYONE can.

Brand New Cadillac was done in one take. The band was just getting warmed up before what they thought would be an actual take, but Guy Stevens recorded it and told them it was a wrap.

"Spanish Bombs" is a hoot. Heck, that's where I got my first username from :D

Anyhoo, in about 6 months, once the stain of new music has been vanquished from your system via this kind of quality album, try the Clash's "Sandinista!"

It's like a bloody, spectacular, flawed and majestic train wreck.

However, don't buy it just yet. And once you do get it, give it time. You might be able to take "London Calling" in on one or two listens, but not "Sandinista!".

Sandinista!'s messy sprawl makes much, much more sense than London Calling's.

Seriously.

In relation to The Clash , who else remembers Big Audio Dynamite II - The Globe ? I love the title song as I'm listening to it right now. They had a cool music video to the song of them playing on a roof top , that I still remember.(y)

Check out "Bankrobber", "Julie's Been Working For The Drug Squad" and "Rock The Casbah" all top tunes

MAN I wish they would've issued Black Market Clash -- AS IT WAS -- on CD. Right now, you have to cobble all these bits and parts together, which means spending way too much to get it.

It was a beautiful 10" Epic NuDisk -- about 38 minutes of goodness for cheep.

It was also the third Clash record I ever bought. :D

I have Black Market Clash and Super Black Market Clash. Both on CD. I prefer the former, overall.

...maybe I should just check Amazon or something, but how the hell did you get Black Market Clash by itself, original version, on CD!?

I will come and KILL YOU FOR THAT.

it's so nice to see that people still 'discover' this album :D it's the kind of album you just HAVE to hear in order for your life to be completed.

Seriously.
