I got stoned and this came on my Mp3 player at random, and I must say, what an album!
Better than Lullabies.
I just can't stop playing it, a year away from it made my heart grow fonder or some shit.

They're probably the best hard rock act in the world! I can't stop loving them! If you are one of the lucky ones to have their first album, I praise you. They're definetly going to be in the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in the future.

Yeah, It's a toss up between Rated R and Songs For The Deaf. Probably Rated R, overall. Lullabies is actually quite good, but I really need to hear some Oliveri by the halfway point.

I never really got into Songs for the Deaf. Their versatility as a band (with the line-up at the time, that is) is more apparent on Rated R. I enjoy the hard stuff and all, but the majority of my favorite QOTSA tracks are some of the slower, more melodic ones that aren't really featured on Songs for the Deaf.

Get into em, but don't get stoned. You'll only regret it. (n)

I actually thought their first record was amazing...or at least the s/t one. Opening 3 or 4 tracks are storming!
But yeah, there was a press review comment used to promote Songs For The Deaf, and it was something like 'a record you can live inside for a month'. For a month, there was nothing else I listened to. It starts of well enough, but after about track 6 it's just quality track after quality track. I also thought the album was a bit of a grower (y)

I agree, QOTSA missed Oliveri on this record. Homme needs him, you know 'the sum of the parts is greater than the whole' kind of thing.
Rated R is better than Songs For The Deaf. On the whole, though, I'll go to Kyuss before QOTSA on most occasions.

i gotta disagree with most of you here.. although SFTD isn't a bad album.. lullabies is vastly superior. the star of SFTD for me is lanegan - olivieri is just boring (and based on homme's "real reason" why olivieri was kicked out, i'm glad that he's gone)
i also love the fact that homme was able to get johannes and shneider aboard (of eleven fame) .. who really do a great job
