I think it may have something to do with most internet geeks having fat saugage like fingers, so when they type, they end up hitting the wrong keys, or hit extra keys by mistake.

I find "woot" or "w00t" to be uber-lame.

Especially when it's used in real life. Yes, I've actually heard people say "woot" in real life. I cried myself to sleep that night. :(

They use numbers, because usually it's young kids on their school machines and often they surf on sites where curse words are banned so they had to come up with ways to write those. Hence 5417 and #u(I<. oo I don't know how they really type those, but I noticed that you couldn't write "shit" on the Hives' forum.

My friend belongs to a site that is frequented by housewives. She says they have loads of puzzling abbreviations and conventions. It sounds a lot more off-putting than what the cool kids are doing. :)
