Why should there be one? I certainly couldn't say Boards of Canada were any better than Radiohead, or Radiohead any better than the Beastie Boys etc.
If we're talking trad-guitar stadium band who flirted with electronica then dissapeared up their own arses as they went creative tail-chasing, then yes; Radiohead are the best.

I don't think there's a clear, no-argument-about-it winner; I do think that Radiohead's stuff -- fascinating as it is -- lacks a certain warmth that I would require of "best" anything.
Without giving it much thought at all, I'd put the White Stripes above Radiohead in a heartbeat. I don't think half the people on this board realize how good the Stripes really are. They've already got three albums for the ages; not bad at all.
And if we were talking about artists and not just bands, Brad Mehldau would get a nod.

ryan adams is a fucking tool.
No other artist can release 3 albums in one year alone and STILL be consistent.
Few artists can ever pull that off. He practically writes a new song every 5 minutes and if you've heard his unreleased stuff (he's got enough in the vaults to put out 6 albums every year, practically), it is of equal quality.
He's amazing for being prolific and prolifically good. Deal with it.

The White Stripes are high up there, for sure.
I think most naysayers just don't like them because they're reacting to the hype. If they actually took a listen, they'd know it's pretty fucking deserved.
For godsake, Jack White produced a fantastic album for Loretta Lynn. The guy is talent and integrity through and through.

Esquire or somebody just wrote a review ho-humming the new album because it sounded exactly like Elephant. Amazing to me, since the album struck me immediately as pretty weird and very different.

It's clear the scribe for Esquire did not even listen to "Get Behind Me Satan." Once "Blue Orchid" ended (which is actually quite a different tune for TWS stylistically anyway), the rest of the album is about as different from "Elephant," "White Blood Cells," "De Stijl," and their self-titled debut as it can get.
I guess they'd prefer to listen to some more Black Eyed Peas, right?

Not saying Radiohead aren't awesome, but can you seriously listen to ALL of "Amnesiac"? "Kid A" was brilliance, but overall "Amnesiac" really was a bunch of leftovers from "Kid A."
"Hail To The Thief" didn't really grab me (to be fair, I may need to listen to it more).
"Pablo Honey" has its moments, but was too derivative.
"The Bends," "OK Computer" and "Kid A" stand as their only perfect albums to date.

Well, alright.
They know how to sell records. Look at the numbers of the past 15 years, and I will bet my bottom dollar Green Day have out sold a huge amount of the competition in their genre. They have put out some very very good albums, including American Idiot, that have gone platinum two or three times over. They know how to market well and they are a solid sell.
Whether you can admit it or not, they have put out some fantastic songs. Yes, they are simple as hell, but who ever said a good song has to have all the bells and whistles? They can play their own respective instruments well. None of them particularly stand out as fantasic musicians, but collectively they have global noteriety as a symbol of the 90's punk thing.
Is that good?

Selling lots of records and having big tours means nothing. In the end, it's about the content of the music and how well it is. I'm sad to say that Green Day does not come to mind when I think of well put together music.
Yeah, he said that. *shakes head*
Content of music? How about explaining that. I respect your opinion whether you respect mine or not, but I would rather try to understand where you are coming from rather than just say

i'm going to say pearl jam. soundgarden if they hadn't broken up.
reason being:
incredible live show - they're the kind of live band that has a cult-ish following.. long sets.. they change the setlists every night... and press official bootlegs too
incredibly diverse albums... right after ten they switched up completely.. their albums all have something really special to them. several are criminally underrated (no code, yield) i'm guessing that most of the flaming that i will get is due to the fact that people base their opinion on Ten (alive, black, evenflow, jeremy etc) .. a great album.. but does not represent their whole career
dedicated to the fans... one of the best fan clubs out there.. that guarantees good seats to it's members.. issues christmas vinyl.. and not too expensive either
all around great rockin music.
The Notorious LOL

I do like pearl jam but Im gonna have to disagree.
fuck I mean every band that came out around that time ended up on a major label because they were putting out that melodramatic angsty teenage mid 90s bullshit....radiohead, pearl jam, and stp for example...but they all went different directions after their debut album.
ten was like frat kid music. Anything after was really good. Nowadays they're pretty much an NPR band that hangs out with neil young and other old farts. Have little interest in anything they did post yield.

Pearl Jam is really generous, in more ways than I can mention on this thread. One thing they did was they bought up a few hundred acres of forest so it wouldn't be developed into crackerbox houses. In an area I still visit at least 3-4 times a year.
They opened for the Rolling Stones, toured with the Ramones and hangout at local haunts w/o any eminence or worry of being recognized, I've seen Eddie stay up till dawn in the streets of Seattle just to thank fans after a show.
Mike McCready is the most underrated guitarist alive today.
The cover of X's "New World" with actor Tim Robbins during the moveon.org concerts was brilliant.
I'm from Seattle, so local boys get the nod.
Seen both live, Jam goes crazy.

Ryan Adams is fairly decent at his very best.
The White Stripes? Christ...they've made a collective 40 good songs, the rest is a bunch of self indulgent throwback shit that rock critics jerk off over.
Ryan Adams is pretty weak. He was good with Whiskeytown. On his own, he's more just a hybrid of various groundbreaking artists of the last 30 years. He goes from being Elton John to Paul Westerberg to Morrisey to Van Morrison. It gets tiring.
I prefer The White Stripes to Radiohead. And 40 songs is a pretty good ratio, regardless of how accurate that figure is or isn't.
Radiohead display two emotions in their music; sad and upset. Their sound is pretty consistently depressing and gloomy, if you think about it. If they were to branch out a bit, they might actually deserve that ridiculous amount of praise they get.
I'm with Parkey, though. Who says there can only be one, anyway?
What about Ween? Had Public Enemy formed in '90, I'd say them.

Green Day is fine. I don't buy into all the anti-hype. They're not a manufactured pop group, they've been doing their thing for a long ass time. nah for as much as one could hate on green day, its kind of pointless. Like mickill said they werent a manufactured group. My brother had Kerplunk about a year before Dookie came out, which actually got semi popular based solely off word of mouth. I could come up with 10-15 good Green Day tracks easily. I like Radiohead, but sometimes if I'm writing, Thom Yorke can sound a bit like a crying baby. It makes me want to smash my computer.
I like the Pistols too, but they were always in it for the money. The whole punk scene and ethos sort of just cropped up around them. In that vein, Billy Joe Armstrong may be sort of right. They always represented something, but I don't think they ever gave a clear indication what it was. They were like the first Pop Idols in a way.
Nirvana was 5 years of aight.

I've only heard the "Absolution" album. I take it the rest of their discography is tops in your book?

i knew it! and no, Absolution kicks ass, its incredible, what are you talking about. Origin of Symmetry is better though, its more complex, Absolution is just a bit easier to hear. Showbiz, their first one, 3rd one in line.
im telling you though, listen to OOS, especially Bliss, Plug in Baby,Space Dementia, Citizen Erased and Megalomania...eh...do it or theyll kill me...seriosly though.

I never knocked "Absolution." I just don't consider it to be on the same level as "The Bends" is all.
BUT I will definitely take the rest of their albums into consideration.

Green Day<Radiohead<Muse
undebatable, sorry.
Muse is pretty much a blatant Radiohead ripoff. I think they're alright and stuff, but I can't listen to them without thinking they're trying to sound exactly like Radiohead and to say they're greater than the band they're ripping off is sort of asinine.

whats wrong with tool aside from their pretentiousness and stalkeresque fanbase comparable only to that of tori amos?
the frontman always beats people up--which i guess is kinda funny, but their videos are scary. and make less sense than donny darko

Green Day is fine. I don't buy into all the anti-hype. They're not a manufactured pop group, they've been doing their thing for a long ass time. Their first two albums were mad low budget, but still decent. But they're nowhere near being the best band of the last 15 years, and they don't really belong in this conversation.
...yeah, but if we having a "pop/rock band member with the best taste in shushi" thread, Mike would at least get nominated. (y)

zippo, lets face it, muse are lame--there songs are all the same with their shitty piano intros(yeah hes good on piano but he plays shit stuff) and he trys to sound raw through his megaphone and everything and if you listen he does this really irritating breath-in screech thing at the end of each line. i do own origin of symentry but i havnt listened to it since i realised how lame muse are. --not nearly as good as radiohead.

when an argument is about defending personal musical tastes, going back and forth gets boring quick, like i said, its ok if we all disagree.
radiohead to me is a great band, theyre awesome, i have pablohoney, the bends and ok compuer (coming soon:kid A) ...but....Muse is on a different level to me. if youre telling me youve listened to more than just one Muse album, and more than just one Radiohead album, then, first of all, your opinion is better based, and second of all, it no doubtedly proves that Muse is not your type of band...which is fine, ofcourse.
by the way, you all suck.
oh shit! i mean..
nono....you all suck, yea.

I think you would have to put the nine inch nails up there to. Their videos are great as well. The bassline on the song 'only' off the newest album is fucking great
