View Full Version : Affirmative Action and Title VII, Civil Rights Act

I have been speculating lately whether we are actually more, or are we actually less, ethnically and racially diverse in the private workplace as a consequence of the so-called reforms of the Civil Rights era. It appears to me that the races, at least in the deep South, are more polarized than ever, and I see no end to it. I think it is a tragedy.
Again, this is just one person's opinion, but there seems to be an undercurrent to the law as it presently exists that says that there needs to be some inherently more favorable bent to hire those of color rather than those of no color. [no color?] Well, i don't know about that. If the playing field were truly level, wouldn't it be better to let everyone come on the strength of their own credentials and wish for the best? I know the counter-argument: we are countering many years of invidious discrimination, and believe it or not, i agree. But the problem is that there is a worry that when one hires a person of color, if there later is a beef presented, the person can't just be fired without the potential for some huge racial uproar. This is simply not true of whites. You don't like one, you fire him [or her]. You just don't get into the race card to begin with. You still have to worry about other protected statuses, but not race.
Is there any way to patch this up? I think voluntary integration is the answer, but how does one accomplish this feat? There are racists everywhere, black and white alike. People like to say they are educated, but are they wizened? Generally, no.

Racist blacks? Bigoted perhaps, but not racist.

Racist blacks? Bigoted perhaps, but not racist.
Racist-adj 1: based on racial intolerance; "racist remarks" 2: discriminatory especially on the basis of race or religion [syn: antiblack, anti-Semitic, anti-Semite(a)] n : a person with a prejudiced belief that one race is superior to others

So yeah, I think racism exists in all races.

How so? Other than the odd teasing from friends of mine, I've never been given a tough time for being a frog. ;)

Do you know that "frog" (the insult) in French is "le françillion"? I'm gonna go yell that at the locals when I visit France.

So do we all agree that there exists racism and bigotry in all races? Are there any who would argue otherwise?

Well, I'm certainly not racist.

I just hate Mexicans, is all.

Buddy, there are plenty of racist blacks.

I was just trying to point out that there is a school of thought where, by virtue of the position held in North American society by the white culture (i.e. control of the gov't, economy, media and culture) it is the one in a position to use bigotry to the detriment of other cultures. In said school of thought, that is what is considered "racist". Further, while all cultures seem to hold bigoted views of other cultures, in North America that is would not be called racism as the non-dominant cultures are not able to adversely affect the dominant (white) culture. This is in relation to jobs, education, etc.

While most won't agree, I do think some distinction should be made between bigotry and bigotry used to advance the dominant culture at the expense of other cultures (racism). Just sayin'.

Stanky - that must have been a difficult admission to make. Your clarification is well taken. However, even without empowerment, you can still be racist. Probably the most racist are those who are most disenfranchised or poverty-stricken. It's much easier to base your bigotry and racism on concurrent examples than it is to rail against some nebulous government entity that has caused your misery. Just sayin.

BTW, have you ever seen Do The Right Thing? Prime examples of racism across the board in that movie, IMO.

Your assumption regarding the difficulty of my so-called admission is presumptuous. Really I was just trying to clarify. Zero difficulty in that.

It may just me being hung up on nuances, but I still resist using the word racism with regard to peoples other than those of the dominant culture. Again - BIGOTRY is everywhere. Yet how it is wielded makes a huge difference in people’s lives.

OK. Respect. We can agree to disagree. Being hung up on nuances is my speciality! (y)
