it seems like the beastie boys vocals are a lot clearer and louder than the songs beat. it sounds like their voices were put over the instrumentation. know what im saying? why is this? was it meant to sound like that? i'm not complaining i love the album

Yeah, the vocals sounded a lot different on this one. They sounded really raw, kinda like Three MC's and One DJ...except on every track.

That'd be Duro, he likes to push the vocals to the front of the mix

I think it's just different from their normal style.
On Ill communication, for instance, they've got those bullshit mics with the distortion.
I personally prefer the bullshit mic style as opposed to the TT5B. But I love both.

Yeah bullshit mics back in the day. The mics these days are much nicer. Especially depending on the company, the pattern (cardioid, omnidirectional etc...,)
But most likely they use cardioid pattern mics. (If anyone has any idea what I'm saying.) And most likely it's Duro too...

All I've got to say is that I've never really payed that close attention to really notice that.

My oh my 'back in the day' they simply used the kareoke mic's for that effect (the distortion)...as well as 'the strictly hand held is the style i go, never rock the mic in the pantyhose' explanation rock Yauch himself!
They didn't use them in Hello Nasty, and certainly not in TT5B (both i imagine had the vocals recorded in recording booths) and as I mentioned Duro put the voacls to the front of the mix this time around.

The bullshit mics were cool for that era, but the clearer, purer sound suited TT5B I think.

Well since it's a rap record, I'm sure Beastie Boys decided to go all out with the concept. So they sat the vocals on top of the beat like most rap records' production.
