i'm sorry, i don't get it.
they are 90% not funny.....i mean seriously pedestrian, low brow, simplistic humor.
i have BBC on my satellite service...and i have been making a sincere attempt at watching and appreciating Black Adder, Spaced, Office....as well as Red Dwarf, Are you being served?, the young ones, etc...
dude, other than an ocassional giggle from red dwarf and the Office....they are not funny.
and i'm not talking about culture differances being the key...
i mean seriously simplistic, low brow humor.
i tried watching black adder yesterday.
it was the episode that started out with Rowan walking in to the pub and they were all getting fascinated with the French...even serving frog legs and "everything frog".
the humor was so shallow and predictable....
rowan walks into the back kitchen and kicks the cat.
"why did you kick the cat?"
"well you see, everything has it's place on the food chain, dear (?)...."
i kick the dog....the dog bites the cat (sound effect), the cat bites the rat (sound effect)...and the rat (the cook screams and grabs his butt) bites you"
that's not funny.
dude...come on. did a 10 year old write that?
and the whole show just drolls on like that.
it's comprable to our lowest brow sitcoms over here...like that jim belushi show..
and what's with the super low production value on all of these programs....like they're shot on 8mm film with one broken boom mic?
is the BBC perpetually stuck in 1981?
the time has come.
the time has come for the british to admit that thier BBC comedies are not funny.
they are shallow and simplistic...with writing comprable to Nickelodian.

Culture barries that's all.
It took me years to find anything American funny. Many people here love Seinfeld (like I do) but the ones who are not used to watch American sitcoms have no idea why some people think it's funny.
There are some American jokes I still don't find funny as well as British ones, not to mention the old Brazilian ones. That's how it goes.:p
But since we're talking about British. I gotta say I love British humor.:D

Best new British comedy, Little Britain!
I like British comedy much better than US (Young Ones, Monty Python, Red Dwarf, Little Britain), I like Brits sense of humour (having lived there and knowing many more Brits than Americans). There's too many US ones that think themselves they're hilarious (Seinfeld, Raymond, Martin) which is a huge turn-off for me, but then there's a few that I really like: Drew Carey, Frasier, Dharma and Greg and Will and Grace. But I couldn't watch them as marathons, except Drew, he's the bomb!

But most comedy is culturally dependent. Someone like Peter Kaye and his Phonex Nights/Max & Paddy shows are SO popular over here, but no-one outside of the UK would stand a chance. The same with most of those I listed. Look at the most popular UK comedy of all time, Only Fools and Horses; it depends so heavily on having experience of living in the UK during the Thatcher years that I doubt it would raise even a chuckle from those without the relevent background.
Now and again stuff does transcend the culture gap, but loads will still be lost.

Now and again stuff does transcend the culture gap, but loads will still be lost.
but the stuff i'm talking about and gave an example is STRUCTUAL. not names, places, regional pop culture.
the structure of jokes of so many of these comedies is just boring and simple.
childish.

Qdrop, saying that about all those British comedies is like saying you havea superior sense of humour, and that's insulting to me and a lot of other people in this thread. Maybe it's just not your type of humour.
Anyway, I'm a big fan of British comedy.
Monty Python. (Series, movies, everything.)
The Young Ones. (Brilliant and surreal.)
Bottom.
Red Dwarf.
Black Adder.
Just to name a few. Never been much for Little Britain though.
Having said that there are very few American sitcoms I like. In fact, only Drew Carey and perhaps Frasier and Married with children.

i'm just telling it like it is...as i see it. i could give a shit if i insult anyone.
Black Adder. seriously?
i just cannot comprehend anyone enjoying the simplistic structure of that show....except for children.
i mean, i didn't really like Friends much....but i can understand why alot of fucking people like it.
i just have yet to see a single british comedy stand up to something like Scrubs.....
Having said that there are very few American sitcoms I like. In fact, only Drew Carey and perhaps Frasier and Married with children. now frasier i can understand.
but it seems kinda odd how europeans can dig drew carey and married with children due to cultural differances.

I'm gonna have to mostly agree with Qdrop here.
To me, British comedy is very hit and miss.
While I can enjoy Monty Python (and most other comedies made by John Cleese and the other Python crew) and Mr. Bean (which I understand isn't very popular in Britain, but popular abroad), stuff like Red Dwarf and Black Adder are just beyond me.
If you look at comedy around the world, while yes, there is stuff that can be universally funny, MOST comedy is very steeped within their own cultural contexts. This is why Hollywood comedies seldom do well abroad while Hollywood action films do great abroad (i.e. action movies don't have much dialogue, so guns and explosions can speak a universal language ;) ).
I think that most British comedy that I enjoy would be of the more "universal" variety (such as "Shaun of the Dead" and Monty Python). If you have to be living in London to get it, chances are I won't get it either.
Obviously for me, I am more into the Canadian/American comedy since that is just what I'm raised on (I lump the two together because there are LOTS of Canadian comedians who have gone to the U.S. and injected their own style onto American pop culture). Stuff like SCTV and SNL.
Having said that, American comedy is also very hit-and-miss, but I'm more likely to "get" it
For the record, it doesn't matter where you come from. "Friends" is the most unfunny piece of shit. Ever.

BBC is a channel to you.
to us, it stands for "british television".
I would like to point out that in saying "us" qdrop is not speaking for all Americans. My friends tend to have travelled more than the average American, but they know that that there are other television channels. It's true though, that BBC America shows non BBC shows.
I think that Blackadder is one of the smartest comedies in the history of television. It's one of a very few that I purchased on DVD. I think that Blackadder, like some other britcoms, assumes a better liberal arts education than most Americans possess. But everytime I meet a freakishly smart person with minimal knowledge of European history, he/she turns out to adore Blackadder.
Some Americans also don't think British stuff is funny because they have a problem understanding accents (especially working class ones), they don't get British political, social, sports, and entertainment references, they don't like their comedy heroes to be unlikeable (one of my favorite things about britcoms) or the shows air so sporadically over here you only see an episode or two. Also, a lot of Americans still think that British comedy is British slapstick.
I love many other britcoms. My gripe is that they make so few episodes. But that's probably why the quality stays high.
I rarely like American sitcoms (even though 1/2 of our shows are based on British ones). The ones I do like are the few with leads who aren't nice (Curb Your Enthusiasm).
By the way, I also think Brits make the best detective shows. All the British home and garden shows are better than the American copies. And for my money, Castaway was better than any American reality show I've ever seen. :)
Americans do a better job with hour long dramas (at least from my limited sampling).
And the people on the British Whose Line is it Anyway were 10 times smarter than the stupid Drew Carey version. That shit is unwatchable.

The beauty with The Simpsons is that they have jokes fit for ALL. There's the literary/pop-culture/historical, etc. references that the scholars will enjoy AND there's the silly antics of Homer and Bart. If you don't get a particular joke (such as that Twilight Zone episode they might be referencing or what have you), that's okay for the less educated, because the next joke is something easy to get.
Throughout junior high and high school, I'd constantly point out to a friend of mine all the references to old movies The Simpsons was doing. He didn't want to hear any of it for he had no interest in those movies. I insisted that he'd enjoy The Simpsons that much more if he'd watch stuff like that, however, it was a lost cause. Sigh.

It's genius on our level muhahahaa.
Other than 'Spaced' and 'The Office', the other comedies you listed are pants anyway.
Then there's Jam - the Chris Morris series. First time I watched it I thought "What the hell is this?" I thought the guy had lost it but gradually, very gradually I started to get it and comedically it is pure genius.
I love Spaced, League of Gentlemen, Nathan Barley. I hate Little Britain. They need to come up with actual jokes rather than repeating the same catchphrases again and again and again.....
There is a big difference between US and UK comedy though. US comedy definitely relies on quips and one liners more. Situations that occur in US comedies seem only to be a vehicle for the quips, whereas in UK comedy a sense of the ridiculous is all that's required sometimes to appreciate the situations themselves.
But what's the deal with American having to remake everything rather than watch the foreign original, while everywhere else in the world we are supposed to watch even the worst that America produces?

Why do you think a cultural difference in humor would be limited to specific cultural references? Couldn't a cultural difference simply be an attitude, tone or timing of a comment? Styles of humor, methods of delivery are cultural along with obvious references to the culture. For example people say British humor is dry and understated, I'm not saying that's why you don't enjoy it, I'm just saying what you don't enjoy could still could be a cultural thing and you just don't get the attitude of most british humor because you're not living daily life in England, picking up on subtle social situations. The Amerian TV shows you mentioned as being funny, I think those are very American in style, the one-two-punch line set up jokes, the zinger one-liners, the goofy loveable yet un-selfaware character - all culturally common in the American idiom.

ehh....i think that the structure of comedy is universal. i mean, i've seen comedians from many nations, and they (the funny ones) all have very similar structure, or at least an identifiable one.
i can identify the structure of Black Adder. it's not odd to me, or anything new. it's just very basic and rudimentary.
that's NOT cultural.
unless you are saying that the british prefer and only understand basic, rudimentary humor structures.....but i don't think you want to offend the british posters.
the examples i keep coming back to is that The Holy Grail and Eddie Izzard are fucking funny.
really fucking funny.
unless you are saying that those examples are American sell-outs....which i doubt.
so eddie izzard is funny....black adder and little britian is not (to me, anyway).
it has nothing to do with cultural referances...because those are relative to both.
so it must be the complexity of the structure, the timing, and the performance of the comedians!
the british are certainly capable of great comedy and great comedic performances.....i'm just seeing so little of it in thier movies and television.
i mean, Mr. Bean....to me, is just Benny Hill rehash (which wasn't very funny).
not much talking....just situational comedy with odd facial distortions to show the emotion. it's just "oh, look at the funny predicament he's in now....OHH...look at his face...ha ha...poor mr. bean."
buster keaton did that first.
but alas, i have admitted there is much more british TV i must see....
you alluded to what style of humor i am partial to....
perhaps that is my problem.....
THAT style of humor, which all cultures are capable of, is simply more prevalant in the US.
perhaps that's it.

I guess it's just the shows you're watching. I'd feel sheepish if a Brit said American comedy was pathetic because they watched Full House and Step By Step, and Family Matters. The Americans who appreciate those shows usually do so out of some kind of nostalgic loyalty and admit that the shows are technically bad.

perhaps shows like black adder are in the similar boat?
i mean, technically better than Family Matters.....but still technically bad.

No. Blackadder is flat out fabulous. The more you watch it the better it gets. Like the patterns from season to season to the patterns within each season. And the actors on it--down to tiny little parts--are awesome. Miranda Richardson in Season 2? Hugh Laurie in seasons 3 and 4? Jesus Christ.
But the subject matter isn't accessible. It's not Everybody Loves Raymond or Home Improvement. I could watch that kind of show once or twice a year but it seems the same every week. And the same from show to show. How many shows feature an awkward or fat working class guy married to a fairly hot woman? Give me a break. And the kids could just wander from show to show they're so interchangable.
I hate family sitcoms, which rules out most of the popular US sitcoms of my lifetime. British sitcoms I see never have children, which is a HUGE bonus.

I used to watch Benny Hill all the time, but only for the dirty parts. what a horrible waste of time, terrible show, awful.
I love The Office, and I think that Absolutely Fabulous was funny. sometimes I watch Coupling and it makes me laugh. and the Young Ones...although, I'm not sure how funny it is, I find it mostly odd and interesting to watch.
I don't really like Fawlty Towers. Things constantly going awry and messes being made isn't that funny to me.
Keeping up Appearances is funny sometimes. I laughed hard at one episode when the lady tried to have a dinner party/bbq outside and kept making everyone sing to drown out the noise of the neighbors fighting. heh.

It's not Everybody Loves Raymond or Home Improvement. don't lump those shows together. while similar in structure and formula...Raymond had FAR superior writing and actors.

ehh....i think that the structure of comedy is universal. i mean, i've seen comedians from many nations, and they (the funny ones) all have very similar structure, or at least an identifiable one.
i can identify the structure of Black Adder. it's not odd to me, or anything new. it's just very basic and rudimentary.
that's NOT cultural.
unless you are saying that the british prefer and only understand basic, rudimentary humor structures.....but i don't think you want to offend the british posters.

The thing about blackadder is it has a cleaver use of wordplays that maybe the americans wouldn't catch - as they are not part of the american vocab. The whole point of the show is to be subtle as well as silly. You say its not cultural, but actually it is. The culture of the situations is very british and european. The places, and references that don't even seem like references, are to do with british places and passtimes. It mocks british ideals, and british stereotypes and brishing pseudo interlectualism. Take that away, and i can see why you only see the silly side.
For example in one episode - the joke isn't that the vegetable looks like a penis - its that the character finds it funny. And also the reaction of the other character who see's himself above it. British comedy has a stupid character and a slightly less stupid character who thinks he's smart.
You miss the point totally man, if you watch a few episodes and understood the characters more you'd have a better chance of enjoying. I didn't laugh the first time either.

qdrop, the reason u dont like english comedy is cause ure american.plus--english people just generally have different senses of humour compared to americans. ever seen an american interviewed on an english chat show or vice verser, they sit looking blankly cause they dont get it, or in the american on the british shows case, they insulted cause they're too touchy.
anyway--try this, its called the mighty boosh, u can watch entire episodes online the mighty boosh - episode 5 - the legend of old gregg (http://www.bbc.co.uk/bbcthree/)

Yeah, and people try to explain and discuss rather than conclude there's just something wrong with him. :)
I'd like to know who are all these people watching all the shit on American TV. Who would waste 30 minutes of their life watching Charlie Sheen do anything? Who watchs Fear Factor? Who can still watch Friends reruns every night, or worse yet, Cheers?
Will there ever be another decent American sitcom?
