The Smiths - "How Soon Is Now"
Gives me goosebumps!
that backwards riff reminds me of two stones griding together. I like it. alot. not so much the Peel Sessions version, but that gives some insight into Johnny Marr's playing ability. he could recrate that sound in a live setting, and it sounding convincing! Thats pretty awesome, if you ask me.
oh, and that one part right that the begining of This Charming Man by The Smiths.
whenever I let my mind go blank, this is the first thing I think of.

I don't know guitar well enough to say on my own, but a friend
who plays well heard this song the other day and stopped to listen
to the guitar solo part and then he praised it for a few minutes.
He rarely praises anything. It's from Yes and it's the solo in the middle
of Owner of a Lonely Heart.

I don't hate them, but I can't stand that fucking song or that riff.
I think Plug In Baby's a better recent riff. In fact, Matt Bellamy - whilst influenced by a Mr. Morello - has come up with some of my favourite riffs of recent years.
I think the Pixies Hey deserves a shout.

Brain fart. You're right, of course, it was James Gang.
Still think its one the better riffs, though.
Somewhat on the subject: How about a thread on some of the greatest BASS riffs? I can already think of a few.

Almost had me going there, Intro. ;)
The song "Rocky Mountain Way" was from Joe's 1973 solo record, The Smoker You Drink, the Player You Get (http://www.allmusic.com/cg/amg.dll?p=amg&sql=10:tdjn7i2jg77r) (he left James Gang after '72).
Great song, all the same.
