an interstate highway that only goes through one state?
the taste left in your mouth after you bit into a steel beam?
so what is it?

eating too many salt and vinegar chips because you love them, even though doing so will fuck up your taste buds for the rest of the day.

You know that everything in her song has been proven false in the irony department? By reputable sources, nonetheless.
My definition of irony is a woman cutting off all her gorgeous hair so she can sell it to wig makers and take the money and buy her husband a new band for his wrist watch he loves so much. And the husband selling his beloved wrist watch so he can buy her a beautifully ornate hairbrush she's had her eye on. And both were surprises for the other. How ironic.

I recall Spy Magazine being the first. But maybe I'm wrong. :)
Isn't most of what Jon Stewart says irony?

I think he's more defined as satire.

Yeah, the show is satire. But he always says one thing and you know he means the opposite. Isn't that irony?
How many of us learned what irony from Reality Bites? I know I did. :o

I personally think irony is like, Wow, that really sucks, what a twist of fate. Or the whole "didn't see that one coming, who woulda guessed?" type of thing.
Satire's like, Jonathan Swift, where he tells everyone the pro's of eating babies when you know he's not for it.
I think the sense of humor the Daily Show has would be categorized the best as Sarcastic Satire. And Jon Stewart's personal sense of humor would be sarcasm more than anything else. (y)

a good example of irony i've been seeing recently is big giant four-wheel drives, SUV's, AUV's, etc. with stickers on them that say "vote greens"

I think I'm correct on the meaning of irony. It doesn't have to be funny or cutting, but sometimes it is. Like if you told me that Republicans have been raising a lot of money and I said, "well, that's certainly good news."
Sarcasm is often ironic.
I think the people with the bumper stickers are only being ironic if they clearly don't mean what's on their stickers. Like when I had a pro-troops in Iraq ribbon next to all my liberal/political ones because I was making fun of the people that had the ribbons. The SUV people are just being hypocritical.
