Alright, I'm a newb so be patient. Back in about 1987 I was given a cassette-dubbed-from-record-album copy of a track called "The New Style" performed by a group calling themselves "The Fly Boys". It was VERY raunchy, and not too politically correct either, and as a teen it was freakin' awesome. So a few years later (the late 1990's) I began a quest, using the internet, to find a copy of this record. I searched for hours at a time, and for months, only to find virtually nothing about this recording. What I did find included two distinctly different stories:

1. It was a recording by a few guys (producers from what I've read) that actually worked with the BB's, and was released in a VERY limited run. As a result of its vulgar nature the BB's opted to distance themselves from it in a hurry.

2. It is a very well crafted 'Bootleg' released in a limited run by some heretofore un-named individuals riding the wave of newfound success the BB's were enjoying. (I'll be honest here, I don't know the BB's timeline all that well, but this story doesn't sit well with me.)

Then, last month I do another exhaustive search and finally find a copy in the UK at a Record shop, so I snatched it up. Now I actually have a copy of it, but STILL have no idea of its origin. I must add that it sounds A HELL OF A LOT like the Beasties, although I don't believe it IS them. However, this being said, whomever these guy are, the certainly had access to the master tapes from "Liscense to Ill" because the music is too perfect and edited/mixed somewhat different than the BB's. I have added a link below to a photo album where you can view pictures of the record-- and see that it looks like a master forgery if it is indeed a bootleg. Any help in solving this mystery would be a huge help. Thanks for your patience.

Currently I have no way of transferring this single to a digital medium, but I think in my extensive search for info on this record I saw at least two people who claimed to have an mp3 on their site. I'll try to find it and post it this weekend---work is a bit crazy right now.

I've seen this 12" before - one on ebay, once in a record store. They didn't have a turntable so there was no way of listening to it.

Can you please post a link to any clips out there? You say it sounds very similar to the Beastie Boys - how similar? Similar enough for it to actually be them? If there are three separate MCs which all sound like Horovitz, Mike D and Yauch, then this suggests that it could actually be them, as they all have very distinct sounding voices, and I should imagine it would be hard to get three MCs together who each sound like one of the boys.

1 thing that hasn't been asked yet> since the song is called THE NEW STYLE, is this a remake of the Beasties song or does it have similar or changed up lyrics in comparison to the Beasties version?

I've yet to find a actual working link to an mp3 file; two peoples lists include this track (and the B-side which is a 'dub' version of the track) and I've emailed one guy to see if he will share it with me, but no response yet.

As for how much it sounds like the beasties--like I said in the first post-- A HELL OF A LOT like them--enough that some people probably mistake them for the real deal, but I'm fairly sure its not them. Then again, this was recorded in 1985/86 and could just be the vocal stylings of a young Beasties.

Mudfoot--
The song is apparently a bastardization of Paul Revere/The New Style and the only discussion I have been able to find about it is here (post dated 12/19/2001): http://www.b-boys.com/headz.html

I'm sure that in due time this mystery will unfold, but until then, ask your friends, and if you weren't born before 1975, ask your older siblings/friends because this track really did achieve some cult status in the mid-to-late 1980's.

Thanks for all the responses and questions, and I will get a clip as soon as I can find one.

*!*!*!*UPDATE*!*!*!*

I recieved an email respose from a very cool guy in Europe who I wrote looking for an mp3 of the mystery "The New Style" recording. A huge thanks to Cheeba for adding this valuable clue to the origins of the mystery. It reads as follows:

hi Mud, i dont know much about these guys, but i know its a bootleg. they have released some other "legal" tracks on their label fly syle records. one of the members of fly boys came from a dj group called jam pony express djs. mostly known for mixtapes and such. they started out in 85. i think they are called "davis, stone & klein". thats the producers of one of their other tracks called "i like the girls". i'll get that mp3 posted on my forum very soon..keep a look out here!

Thanks for tracking it down.

Wow, bunch of wack motherfuckers covering a B-Boys song.

This song sucks a fat one. I'm glad these fools died out in obscurity.
