The whole point is that it isn't in person. If you're reluctant do so in person, you should at least be able to confront people on your own on the internet. I mean, you're safe.

And no, I don't necessarily speak my mind every chance I get in the "real" world, but online, you can't really express anything to a person without typing it out. You can't shake your head when someone's being an idiot, or shoot them a dirty look. Going ":mad:" obviously just isn't very effective. You can't let someone know you're impressed without telling them, which is why people get so disgustingly affectionate with eachother. There's no body language, no way to intimidate someone by cracking your knuckles, no way to let someone know that they're attractive by whistling at them as they walk by. You know, we have limited resources to work with here.

I think the fascinating thing about the internet is the way it mirrors all kinds of real life situations. Most people in life won't confront someone. Instead, they bitch behind their backs. But if that person falls down for some reason, they'll all run over and get their kick in.

FYI, I've been reading a lot of German history again. It colors my perspective, but you see it also with juvenile crime in the US. I definitely have a different perception on this. What happens in the news impacts me way more than what a few people say on the internet. I will never meet people I talk to on the internet and they don't know me enough and I don't know them enough for me to value their opinions.

But what Tony Blair and George Bush decide affects my life. My taxes pay for their hare brained schemes. When they refuse to do anything about climate change or renewable energy they threaten to make our planet unliveable. They fuel tensions between the west and Islam. They finance war and torture. They affect the value of my home, my income. They affect my sense of security, my sense of justice. They make us the targets for extremists.

There are dozens of things in the news which affect my life and the choices I make. The ramblings of bored people will never do that.
