View Full Version : is the DVD setup for to be a disappointment?

I hoping the DVD will be great but I think with all the anticipation, it has a good chance of being a bust.

first of all it'll most likely be out in 2006, this was a concert that took place in '04. Expectations are going to be high given the long wait, will an hour and half of a concert live up to the hype( granted its hype that we have fostered). Second of all this is a DVD of a one-night concert not a DVD of the tour which would justify the delay. I was at the garden show and i enjoyed it but from reviews and bootlegs I know that the garden show wasnt the best one.

sales wise it has a really good chance of being a flop since there wont be any new material featured, beastie boys' fans will of course buy it but since the boys always maintain a low profile their music will be forgotten from the public's mind and the mainstream(which the band belongs to and is a part of) therefore poor sales.

I hope the DVD is good and does well but all i'm saying is that the way things are looking this thing could come and go without much noise.

pleeeeeeeeeeeeeease we should all stop mentioning the DVD because everyone here is eagerly anticipating it. speaking for myself i know i try not to think about it too much becuase i get sad that it's not in my posession. no matter what that DVD is going to be awesome because it's the beastie boys. I was at that concert too and i thoroughly enjoyed it. any video memoir of that concert will rule for me.

I was front row, dead center at the MSG show and it was a great night! The special guests, the set list... It was a lot of fun. So, to see it with all the camera angles and soundboard sound is going to be quite the treat.

Plus I have a bootleg of that show on dvd thats pretty dope... so, I cant imagine what Yauch is going to do for the real version.

ps.
I really wish that dvd was the Long Island show.... just because the set list was better... and the fact that Seth and I was in the VIP section.

just sayin'.

yes of course, because this is definitely the first time in the bands career that they're questioned about what they do.

I think they were questioned more after the LTI Def Jam era, and after Paul's Boutique more.... since PB didn't sell like the record company expected it to. They got into a groove during CYH, IC, & HN because the were the 'cool band to like' back then. Music has changed since the 90's... for the worse probably.

I've never been "disappointed" by anything the Beasties have released. I like certain things better than others...but never disappointed.

I was disappointed in the way they announced the Pageant tour and rolled out the date though. :)

if yauch really had love for the fans he'd stick on one of those never before seen '89 shows as an extra..........

I hate to say this, but it's either a youthful enthusiasm, or you're just typing with MCA in mind. You seem very self-conscious.

I hope it's the former. If you're going to think for Yauch, then think how much stock he must put in a bunch of hacks posting shit on the net.

Do I expect anything I've said to have an effect? No. Post what you think, not what you might think they'd like to read. Balance, yo.

To answer the thread; I don't see how it could be anything but a disappointment for me. I've hyped it up so much in my head that I've delivered the ultimate sucker-punch to myself. It won't be new material.

That said, I'll buy it and love it.

:D

You know what, i'd much prefer a DVD of the show that the Shadrach video footage is from (even if it was in black and white and grainy footage) to a pro-shot multi-angle 2004 show. It is one of the biggest injustices in the world that that footage hasn't been released!

If anyone hasn't seen this version of the Shadrach video (just the concert footage without the art superimposed), you need to check it out. Probably the Beastie Boys' golden age, full of energy and freshness. Highlights are Yauch walking round on stage with a bottle of O.E. in one hand...he also does a flip into the crowd.

I second that! That live version of Shadrach has to be one of my favorite live Beasties performances.... EVER! I can't believe that at least the audio of that show has been leaked. I havnt even seen the set-list of that show. I'd give your left nut for that show!

Just sayin'.

Oh yeah, just by saying that I hope it'll be read and hopefully I'll get a shout out on the next record

I think you read a bit too much into it. It wasn't the cleverest thing to say I admit, it's just either people are always complaining about how long it's taking, that the show was ages ago blah blah blah...I mean it's not as if there's been a live DVD before so i'm just kinda grateful there's gonna be one.

And for the record, I write what i think, how other people are going to respond to it is up to them. I don't think 'hey I'm going to use my youthful enthusiam and keep Yauch in mind when i type this', but if you think that's the case that's fine (y).

I was at the Manchester show, it was off the hook. The boys seems particularly hyped that evening. I loved the comedy MMM 'special award' ceremony.

i dont think we'll be dissapointed. it might not be a huge hit with the masses but i think any beastie fan would love it. besides, its no different than if any other band came out with a live DVD. I wouldnt buy an Ashlee Simpson dvd just the same as one of her fans wouldnt buy a Beastie dvd. so i doubt theyre expecting the world to go crazy over it, its probably just like a gift to the fans.

as for extra cheese's comments: i agree that if you set your expectations too high you will get disappointed (in most things) - i'm just expecting a concert dvd - that is, almost all the songs they played (because for some reason, on concert dvds, some always get cut out) and that's it.

theres plenty of the live material around theres tons of bootlegs, theres the glasgow show, the 2 dollar bill show, there was TFC coverage. They're not officially released but there wont be a major difference between those and the DVD coming out

yeah look mate, not for one moment did i say there wasn't live material available, i just said they'd never released a live dvd, which they haven't...so that's really all there is to say.

whether i'd be more happy with an official dvd as opposed to a bootleg recording or something i recorded of mtv is a different matter.

i've recorded all sorts of tv appearences and live stuff, but that doesn't mean i'm not alowed to be glad that one of my favourite bands is coming out with their first live DVD.

I can't believe I thought it wasn't a 40 oz. What a dick!!!!

But for real, that isn't Yauch jumping into the crowd.

That show needs to be on the DVD, if only to show how far they came, from not being able to even tour for PB, to selling out MSG for what, the third time?

The DVD anticipation is mainley from us on here. There are way more fans out there that don't even know its coming out. Just like with the previous DVD and VHS. And there are way more fans that weren't actually at that show.

You know it will be good.

the show was in October 2004...

so a january to march release would make it between 1 year and 3 months/1 year and 6 months roughly...

oh it's gonna be simply amazing, i just don't think it's very appropriate to release a dvd almost 2 years after the tour as far as marketing goes...but then again, if the beasties were more concerned about hwo many copies they sold, then they woulda probably finished it sooner...they're probably worried about quality right now, and supplying that quality material in the best way possible to their fans
